Malchin fishing tower

The Fangelturm in Malchin is a defensive tower of the town wall that surrounded the town. Due to its height and the town's location on the border with Pomerania, it served as a watchtower. It dates back to the 15th century and a Renaissance gable was added in the second half of the 16th century. The building is a six-storey brick structure with a gabled roof. The tower is around 35 meters high and was completely renovated in 1996. Although it was originally built as a defense tower, it takes its name from its later use as a prison (Fangelturm).

Today, this tower is the only one of its kind in Mecklenburg and is one of the oldest buildings in the state. The Fangelturm is a stone castle which was built in 1360 as part of a fortification for the outer city defense of Parchim. The structure has a height of 10 meters, a wall thickness of 1 meter and 100 layers of stone. The entrance to the tower is 2.50 meters above the ground and used to be accessible via a retractable ladder. This observation post was used for defense and to notify the guard at the Wockertor through the embrasures. At that time, robber barons in particular posed a threat, driving herds of cattle from the town's fields. The name Fangelturm has only been used since the beginning of the 19th century and suggests that it was used as a prison. Today, this tower is the only one of its kind in Mecklenburg and is one of the oldest buildings in the state. The Fangelturm is open to the public from May to October from 08:00 - 18:00.

This building was part of the medieval fortifications that once surrounded Greifswald. The Fangenturm was first mentioned in the town register in 1329 as "Vangentorm". After the fortifications in the area of the Schützenwall were levelled in the 18th century and the Hansering was built in the 1970s, the 13.50-metre-high tower was preserved as a rudiment. Later, when the building no longer met the requirements as a powder tower, the city leased it to the university in 1775, which used the tower as an observatory for a while due to its height and location on the edge of the city. The battlements were not added until the middle of the 19th century, when the Fangenturm was even used as a public toilet. After extensive conservation and renovation work in the 1990s, the harbour master of the museum harbour was able to move into his office on the first floor. He has organizational responsibility for the harbour with over 50 berths, which are reserved exclusively for seaworthy traditional ships.

Bellin fieldstone church

● Bellin

The fieldstone church in Bellin is a late Romanesque-early Gothic church building, which was built from 1230. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in the district of Rostock. The fieldstone church stands on a hill on the edge of the village. The nave with round apse in the choir is the same width as the sturdy tower with mansard roof. Fieldstone and brick were used to build the outer walls. The interior rooms have different vaults. The church's inventory includes a stone sarcophagus of Count Gerd Carl von Sala auf Bellin from the 18th century. A special feature of the Bellin church are the wall paintings from different periods. Extensive renovations were carried out in the church in the 1980s. The 14th and 15th century paintings were uncovered in the process. They depict, among other things, Adam and Eve, the Last Judgement and angels making music. In addition to scheduled Sunday services, various cultural events also take place here. Unusual medieval frescoes, a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder, a Lütkemüller organ, and a multimedia exhibition in front of and inside the church will guide you as you explore this historic site. The fieldstone church in Groß Gievitz on Lake Torgelow is a structure dating from the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style in the 13th century. It was first mentioned in 1267. The church is furnished with interesting artifacts and features impressive original murals from the time of its construction, which were uncovered in 1964. In 2022, a multimedia exhibition was created, including a film portrait of this unique building.

Japenzin fieldstone church

The Japenzin fieldstone church dates back to the 15th century. The church in Japenzin is a fieldstone building which apparently encases an older half-timbered building. The bells are considered to be the oldest bell ensemble in Western Pomerania, the oldest bell was made around 1400. Worth seeing is the coffered ceiling with a starry sky and the carved altar from around 1500, which shows Mary between St. Martin and St. Catherine in the central shrine and other saints on the sides.

Poppentin fieldstone church

The Protestant church is a listed church building in Poppentin, a district of the municipality of Göhren-Lebbin. The church, a rectangular fieldstone building from the 13th century, is one of the oldest churches in the region. Since January 2020, the church has belonged to the parish of Malchow. The beautifully situated Poppentin church has been used as a wedding church many times in recent years. The old church was once surrounded by a farm and had its own vicarage. Today, the Protestant church is Filia zu Sietow. In 1802, there were three other farms and a school next to the vicarage. An old cobblestone road led from Poppentin through Kirch Poppentin to Wendhof. The cornerstones of the original church from the 13th century are still preserved in hewn granite. The walls of the nave were rebuilt in brick around 1820. Pointed arched windows are set into the walls, which are divided in the choir area by smaller, five-part windows with intermediate bars. The flowery stained glass windows are striking. The west tower, built in the braid gothic style, bears the date 1822 on the front. The portal in the lower storey remains in fieldstone. Its upper storey was renovated in brick. The walls are divided by sound openings, which were set into pointed arched blinds. Its flat pyramid roof was covered with roof tiles. During the restoration of the church in 1883, the interior was also renovated and a wooden barrel vault was installed in the central part of the interior. The simple interior decoration was kept in the neo-Gothic style. A small bronze bell by the Wismar master Albrecht hangs in the tower. The bell by Carl Illies no longer exists. During the renovation work from 2000 to 2002, the roof was re-roofed. The church and cemetery are framed by a dry stone wall. A listed sculpture can be found at the grave of Frieda Glantz. At the back of the cemetery is the tomb of the Tiele-Winckler family, a copy of the Blessing Christ by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770 - 1844), erected in 1890. The marble original can be found in the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. After more than 100 years, the 3.50 meter tall copy made of cast zinc with galvanic copper plating was severely damaged by erosion and threatened to topple over. The Rotary Club Waren / Müritz, together with many sponsors, raised a total of 25,000 euros to restore the monument, including the base and metal fence. After extensive restoration work, the monument has now shone again in its former glory since 16.05.2013. It is regularly maintained by the Rotarians. Dömitz Fortress

The brick bulwark overlooks the Elbe near the town of Dömitz. Its walls have seen princes, military leaders and kings come and go and inspired writers. In addition to the impressive large bastions and the gate with a real drawbridge, visitors can discover the exhibition in the museum and the information center of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape MV with the exhibitions "Man and Biosphere" and "Basically". ATTENTION: The Dömitz through road (B 195) in the area of the Steinschleuse bridge is fully closed to traffic until the end of 2025. The detour will be via the L 04 (Hohe Brücke Dömitz). A local detour will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists. The cultural monument Dömitz Fortress is located on the banks of the Elbe in Mecklenburg and is one of the few very well-preserved 16th century lowland fortresses in Northern Europe. Built in the shape of a pentagon and equipped with bastions and casemates, it displays the impressive defensive architecture of the Renaissance. It was built between 1559 and 1565 on the remains of a 13th century castle and was used for military purposes until the late 19th century. The five bastions and casemates, the arsenal, the old main guardhouse and the commandant's house provide an insight into the defenses of several centuries. Dömitz Fortress is of particular national importance due to its very high value in terms of national and military history and art history. Kirchdorf Fortress

The remains of a fortress can be found southwest of Kirchdorf on the island of Poel. It was a two-part complex built between 1614 and 1619, consisting of a rampart around a church and the immediately adjacent star-shaped fortress. The earth walls of the fortification system are of impressive size. The moats in front are recognizable as reed zones. The fortress is one of the best-preserved early modern fortifications on the German Baltic coast. The redoubt was built by Duke Adolf Friedrich I according to plans by the master builder Ghert Evert Piloot from Emden. It was a Swedish crown estate for a long time and was finally severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War and fell into disrepair over the following years. The buildings were demolished piece by piece in the 19th century. Only the village church was preserved as a brick building. A model of the old fortifications can be seen in the Kirchdorf Island Museum.

Flint fields in the Schmale Heide nature reserve

To the north of the Baltic seaside resort of Binz, between Prora and Mukran, you will find the flint fields in the Schmalen Heide nature reserve. Their uniqueness makes the narrow heath with the stone fields a natural phenomenon of international standing. The Schmalen Heide nature reserve covers an area of 40 hectares. The main components are 14 boulder fields that run parallel to the Baltic Sea coast and are about two kilometers long. They are made up of 90 percent flints, the rest are crystalline boulders of Nordic origin. The grey-white shimmering flint rubble is about one meter high. In between, there is scattered vegetation with trees, shrubs, lichens and heather. The stone walls were thrown up 3,500 to 4,000 years ago by a number of strong storm floods. At that time, the sea level was one to one and a half meters higher than it is today. The small Jasmund Bodden was then an open bay. The flint fields are a popular excursion destination. A hiking trail is signposted from Mukran (parking lot "Feuersteinfelder").

Pasewalk Fire Department Museum The Fire Department Museum is located on the grounds of the district fire department headquarters. Since 1998, the history of firefighting—particularly in the Vorpommern region—has been showcased across a total of 560 square meters of exhibition space. The oldest exhibit is a tub pump (circa 1800) from Pasewalk. Large-scale firefighting equipment is on display in the garages.

Teterow Fire Department Museum

Teterow Fire Department Museum - Firefighting History in the Old Fire Station The old fire station is located in the historic mill district, right next to the town mill. It dates back to 1896 and served as the home of the Teterow Volunteer Fire Department—founded in 1868—for more than seven decades. After a severe fall storm in 1964, the hose tower began to lean dangerously, so it was demolished to ensure safety. As a result, the building lost an important functional element. As the fire department’s range of duties expanded, the old fire station proved unsuitable. The firefighters had reason to celebrate on the 100th anniversary in 1968. The new fire station was handed over, and the town took over use of the old one from then on. As part of the restoration of the Mühlenviertel district, the municipality began restoring the firehouse and reconstructing the hose tower in February 1997. As early as August 14, the completed building was handed over to the firefighters. They immediately began setting up a small but impressive exhibition on the history of the fire department. In 1999, the reconstruction of the annex was also completed. An attractively designed fire department museum was created over a large area. There’s plenty to see here—ranging from information on the development of the fire department in Teterow to old firefighting equipment and fire trucks. It’s well worth a visit.
