Museum of Technology and Transportation

Szczecin

Established in 2006 in a former tram depot, the museum is one of the largest technology museums in the country. The exhibition is dedicated to Szczecin’s public transportation system and the automotive industry. The Museum of Technology and Transportation is located in the former tram depot on Niemierzyńska Street, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century, specifically in 1907. The construction was necessitated by a lack of space for the growing number of trams. Land used for allotment gardens and the site of a county cemetery were acquired for the project. The building was designed by two Berlin architects—Steinmetz and Griesbach. The gabled roof with a glass front, in which a clock was installed, is particularly striking. Before the outbreak of World War II, the depot was modernized twice—in 1912 and at the turn of the year from 1929 to 1930. The Niemierzyn depot was the first depot in Szczecin to resume operations after World War II—it opened as early as 1945. The facility is a terminal depot with 16 tracks inside. Starting in 1945, Niemierzyn served only tram line 3; toward the end of its operation, it also served lines 4, 11, and 12. The last departure from this depot in history took place on October 1, 2004—it was tram line 11. In 2009, the modernization of the Niemierzyn depot began, and its interior spaces were handed over to the Museum of Technology and Transportation. The museum opened its doors a year later. Today, visitors can see historic trams, buses, cars, and motorcycles in the former depot. Permanent exhibitions include, among others: “Szczecin Automobiles, 1919–1944,” “Polish Automobiles—Vehicles of the People’s Republic of Poland,” “Single-Track Vehicles from the People’s Republic of Poland,” “Polish Prototypes,” and “Vehicles of Uniformed Services.” Ticket prices are: 10 PLN (regular), 5 PLN (reduced), 24 PLN (family ticket, 1 or 2 adults and children, maximum 5 people), group ticket 5 PLN (10 or more people). Admission is free on Tuesdays (except for “Eureka of Movement”). The Niemierzyn Depot was added to the Voivodeship List of Historic Monuments in November 2005. The museum has an elevator for people with limited mobility, which allows wheelchair users to access the exhibition in the basement and the café on the upper floor. Visitors can purchase souvenirs at the ticket office.
