The Feldsteinkirche in Groß Gievitz – Over 750 Years of History in Mecklenburg
The Feldsteinkirche in Groß Gievitz is one of the most remarkable medieval religious buildings in the inland region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. First mentioned in a document in 1267, it was built during the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style and thus stands on Lake Torgelow as one of the oldest examples of rural church architecture in the region.
Medieval frescoes, Cranach paintings, and a Lütkemüller organ
The interior of the church houses an extraordinary collection: The impressive murals from the time of the building’s construction were uncovered in 1964 and feature unusual medieval frescoes in an impressive state of preservation. Added to this are a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder and a Lütkemüller organ—a combination that is unparalleled far beyond Mecklenburg.
Multimedia exhibition inside and outside the church
Since 2022, a multimedia exhibition has enhanced the visitor experience: Through a film portrait and other interactive elements, the history of this special place becomes tangible for all visitors—whether art lovers, history buffs, or families traveling through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania who are exploring the inland region between Rostock, Stralsund, and Greifswald.
