At 66 meters, the Bakenberg is the highest point on the hilly Mönchgut Peninsula and offers unique views across the Mönchgut landscape all the way to the island of Vilm. The Mönchgut Peninsula, with its gently rolling hills, lagoons, bays, and headlands, resembles a small archipelago. Mönchgut was already a popular travel destination during the Romantic era. Here, picturesque scenes—thatched-roof fishermen’s cottages, the hills, the coarse-wooled Pomeranian land sheep—have always been, and still are today, a source of inspiration—and above all, these views from the “Zicker Alps,” which rise up to 60 meters high. The peninsula’s unspoiled nature attracted Romantic-era artists. In 1801, Caspar David Friedrich sketched the Mönchgut coast from a hill on the Nordperd near Göhren.

Beaver Raft on the Peene River
● Loitz
A journey of discovery along the Peene Unspoiled nature awaits you, offering plenty of opportunities for independent travelers. Whether you’re a nature lover, an angler, or a family, the Peene, Lake Kummerow, the Trebel, and the countless peat pits offer unforgettable experiences in one of Europe’s last natural paradises. The Peene River flows completely unobstructed through its glacial valley and leads directly from its sources into the Baltic Sea. No weirs or locks disturb the journey as you navigate the Peene and take in its leisurely flow with almost no current. This is another reason why a unique flora and fauna can be admired in this one-of-a-kind nature reserve in Germany. Many plant and animal species can now only be found here. Despite the few towns along the river, the region offers many historical traces and small reminders of its settlement history. Beginning with the Slavic Obodrites, to whom many towns still owe their names, Vikings, Saxons, and Christian missionaries encountered one another more or less peacefully. The influence of the Hanseatic League and, later, the Swedish and French occupations of Western Pomerania gave way to a more peaceful Prussian era, which ushered in a new wave of settlement in the 20th century from Hesse, Swabia, and Westphalia in the fertile glacial valley. Traces of the GDR also peek out here and there in the form of a museum or a tractor in the meadows. Recreation on the Peene means an active, self-guided vacation. Perhaps one of the last true nature adventures for families and travelers seeking biologically clean water, fresh air, and proximity to animals and vegetation away from the tourist hotspots. Take time for the Peene, and you’ll be taking time for yourself!

Billich expanded it into a park with arbors, new paths and trees. Remains of the original park still exist despite the modernization in the style of the 1970s. Rare tree and shrub species, such as the bald cypress, were planted here and still grow today. The tranquil atmosphere and idyllic landscape make the Brunnenaue a popular recreational area for locals and tourists alike. The fountain in particular, with its large fountain, is a popular meeting place in summer. The many seats surrounding the fountain and numerous park benches along the paths through the park invite you to linger.
