Church of Thanksgiving in Sehlen

The Dankeskirche is a church building dating from 1866 in the municipality of Sehlen on the island of Rügen. The neo-Gothic brick church was built in 1866 and is situated on a hill surrounded by a cemetery. It is 18.50 m long, 11.80 m wide and 12 m high up to the ridge, which is topped by 7 m by the slender, four-storey west tower with a simple saddle roof. The hall-like nave is adjoined by a polygonal apse. The choir and nave are dominated by sturdy buttresses. The high, large pointed arch windows end at the height of the galleries, which run around the nave on three sides. The new congregation room, which was separated from the nave by a glass wall and door in 1993/94 and is located under the gallery, where the organ is also located, is architecturally original. The organ was built in 1887 by Friedrich. A. Mehmel from Stralsund. It was thoroughly restored in 1999 by the organ builder Wolter from Zudar/Rügen. The pulpit, like the first stone altar, dates from 1866. A new altar made of Pomeranian oak was installed in 1999. In 2001, the rose window of the entrance portal was renovated. A service is held every 2nd Sunday at 9.00 a.m. and there are summer concerts.

In Dargun Castle Park, you can stroll along historic paths, visit the castle grounds and the museum, and browse the Dargun monastery shop. Today’s castle garden bears traces of the Renaissance, the Baroque, and the 19th century, as well as a careful reconstruction carried out in recent years. The parterre beds surrounding the pavilion, indicated by slightly sunken grass paths, are reminiscent of the design of the palace garden in Güstrow. The Renaissance layout was created under Duke Johann Albrecht, who often stayed in Dargun. The gardens were devastated during the Thirty Years’ War. Under Duke Gustav Adolf, the palace gardens were redesigned in the Baroque style. The old yews are remnants of Baroque topiary trees. The garden sections are aligned via paths toward the tea pavilion, which was built around 1690. For the Baroque garden, the relationship to the palace was important. The garden was accessed via the double-flight open staircase at the southwest tower. Based on a design by Klett, the court gardener in Schwerin, the four-row avenue of red-flowering chestnut trees was planted in the previous century along the western castle entrance up to the Yellow Gate, and the arbour with hornbeams south of the church entrance was created. The agricultural school, which moved into the palace in 1873, used the palace garden for educational purposes. After 1945, the grounds were divided into allotment gardens and a small zoo was established. As part of the garden’s reconstruction, the allotment gardens were relocated and an open orchard was reestablished. Klett’s arbor was reconstructed, and a row of red-flowering chestnut trees was planted along the four-row avenue. Today, in the sprawling park, you can see, among other things, yew trees over 300 years old, a hornbeam arbor, a ginkgo tree, a large orchard meadow, a fish ladder completed in 2016, and the tea pavilion—which serves as the local registry office. In 2020, a barrier-free loop trail was completed for visitors with limited mobility. The park is open to the public and offers ample free parking as well as a public restroom. You can perfectly combine a stroll through the park with a tour of the monastery and castle grounds, a visit to “Uns lütt Museum,” or a shopping trip at the Dargun monastery shop.

In our manufactory in Ahrenshagen-Daskow we produce delicious jams, fruit spreads and jellies in the traditional way, mainly from sea buckthorn. The Darßer Manufructur has set itself the task of processing the vitamin-rich sea buckthorn into a wide range of products. Fruit spreads, jams and jellies are then produced in the traditional way. We do not conjure up the good taste in a jar, but rely on the ancient art of cooking. Our specialty is the local fruit that everyone here knows, some of which has been somewhat forgotten in our modern world because it doesn't fit in with industrial production. Sea buckthorn, with its exceptionally high vitamin C content, plays a very important role in our range. But we also cook some other spreads because we enjoy trying them out! You can visit the manufactory from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and Saturday from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.

The "traitor's house" near Groß Stresow

The "Traitor's House" commemorates the battle between Prussia, Denmark and Sweden (Northern War) at Groß Stresow. When the combined forces of the Prussians and Danes landed at sea, tradition has it that Johan Meußling - a man from Groß Stresow - showed the fleet under Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I the way through the Rügen Bodden and ashore with a bed sheet on the roof of his house. The Swedes were only temporarily expelled from Rügen at the time, but Stresower's house was nicknamed the "Traitor's House". The original traitor's house was demolished around 30 years ago. In the new building, typical of Rügen, which has been given a half-timbered roof and walls lined with old bricks that the villagers themselves had recruited, the people of Stresow present their history in an exhibition. The statue of Prussian King Frederick William I stands in front of today's museum. To commemorate the great victory over the Swedes, Frederick William IV had one of the "Prussian Columns" erected on a hill in Stresow in 1855 with a larger-than-life statue of the Prussian King Frederick William I (1688-1740). In 1991, the 15-metre-high "Stresow Prussian Column" was dismantled due to the threat of collapse. Only after 23 years was the last of the two Prussian columns erected in 2014.

The Martina Kriedel studio

The idyllic village of Zapel lies in the midst of rustic nature. There, where hedgehogs and hares say goodnight to each other, you will discover the "Atelier Martina Kriedel". In a cozy atmosphere, you can look over the artist's shoulder as she creates. Here you will find the perfect gift for every occasion - whether a portrait or a self-designed marionette. Many portraits, drawn in charcoal, chalk, sepia and pencil, as well as real oil paintings, adorn the walls of the small studio. Why not have your portrait painted? Whether from a photo or a model in several sessions, anything is possible... You can also marvel at the art calendars that Ms. Kriedel has drawn, mostly on behalf of cities: The motifs of the calendars are historical houses, mills and churches from towns in the region. In her small marionette manufactory, Ms. Kriedel produces her miniature marionettes and portrait marionettes as truly unique pieces with her own certificate. Customers can have their own personal marionette made from a photo: The head, hands and feet are modeled, the clothes are tailor-made and fitted with a simple play cross. You can also receive a self-made mini bust, which can represent your desired portrait. This individual gift will cheer you up, as Mrs. Kriedel has her very own creation. For parties and events, there is the mobile puppet theater Kriedelfix, which was specially created by Mrs. Kriedel. The stories, the marionettes, the stage sets, the props and the theater are freely designed by her. Old fairy tales are also performed. The theater can be booked for family celebrations, parties or events on request. The marionette theater is also available in the small theater with 15 seats. Please enquire directly about performance times and current plays. Another offer is the two-hour creative program "The forest witch on a treasure hunt". To find the treasure, the participants have to complete 7 tasks. These tasks are creative, pedagogically selected and close to nature. At the end there is a certificate of participation and a gift to be found in the treasure. The environmental concept and the regional cultural history also play a role. The project promotes creativity, imagination, health and social interaction. Even the NDR accompanied Mrs. Kriedel on a witch hike. Current offer and prices on request. Ms. Kriedel also offers various workshops: Whether pottery, handicrafts, painting: up to 6 people can "let off steam creatively" here, usually in 2-hour workshops. Ms. Kriedel is on hand to provide expert guidance. An in-house kiln enables pottery work as small ceramics.

The Granitzhaus

The former forestry and inn of the Princes of Putbus has been home to an information center about the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Southeast Rügen since 2004. The Granitzhaus on the island of Rügen is a former forester's lodge and inn dating from 1901, which now houses the information center for the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve. It stands directly opposite the Granitz hunting lodge near Binz. In 1726, the then Prince of Putbus Moritz Ulrich I had a hunting lodge built on the open space in front of today's Granitzhaus. This consisted of a main house and two side pavilions. Four consecrated stag heads on the front of the main house indicated the purpose of the building: hunting. The princely hunting party stayed in the main house during the hunting season. The current exhibition in the Granitzhaus is designed to be interactive, arouse curiosity and stimulate reflection. Among other things, visitors can look forward to a "treasure chamber" with very special treasures from the region. There is also an animation on the post-glacial development of the region on a 3D model, which also vividly illustrates the settlement history of south-east Rügen and the development of the Baltic Sea. Entry to the exhibition is free of charge.

The JOHANNA shipwreck

The steel hull weighs tons on the Fuhlendorf Bodden beach, where "everyone" took their first swimming test at the swimming camp. The wreck in Fuhlendorf is the steel mizzen barge (sailing barge) with wooden bottom JOHANNA, built in 1899 by D. W. Kremer in Elmshorn. It was commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm Konrad Gronemeyer, a skipper from Estebrügge. Her home port was also Estebrügge. Ship dimensions: Length: 19.04 m | Width: 4.77 m | 38.00 GRT Klaus Hagenah, a skipper from Krautsand, bought the sailing ship in 1909. In 1929 Karl Voß from Jarmen became the owner. The JAHANNA was powered by a 25 hp engine 1955 Helene Voß, Jarmen, became the owner and sold the boat to 1955 to Hermann Darmann, Demin. He renamed the ship GERTRUD. In 1964, the ship sank at Kamig Haken (entrance to Ueckermünde) and was brought to Wolgast on behalf of the Stralsund Waterways Authority. In 1972, Karl-Heinz Jürgens from Wiek/Darß bought the barge, which lay in Wiek harbor for many years. In 1993, Hans Joachim Jürgens sold the sailing barge to Wolfgang Burr from Fuhlendorf. At Whitsun 1993, the ship, which had run aground, was made buoyant and transferred to Fuhlendorf. A restoration was planned at the Inselwerft Horn shipyard in Wolgast, but did not materialize. In January 1995, the hull was pulled onto the private beach in Fuhlendorf. The name JOHANNA and the home port ESTEBRÜGGE can still be read on the stern of the former sailing barge. For centuries, the "Ewer", a sailing barge, was the typical cargo ship of the Lower Elbe and the Wadden areas off the North Sea coast from Denmark to Holland. With its flat bottom, the ewer had a shallow draught and could easily navigate tidal waters. The term "Ewer" first appeared in May 1251 in a Flanders customs tariff and in 1299 in the Hamburg pledge book. The first two-masted ewers appeared around 1820, but neither one-masted nor two-masted ewers were bound to a size (ship class). Until around 1880, only wood was used as a building material, then due to the shortage of shipbuilding timber and the increasing supply of iron, the first ships were built from iron. Only for the bottom of the ship was wood still used during a transitional period. In 2025, the municipality of Fuhlendorf acquired the neighboring stretch of Bodden beach. You can now reach the Bodden again via a public path through a boggy Bodden coastal forest and view the JOHANNA up close.

Permanent exhibition "Model railroads from 150 years"

150 years of model railroading - 15 dioramas, display cases and model railroad panels show the development of model railroading from its beginnings to the present day. A model railroad is a scaled-down (scale smaller than one) replica of parts of a "large" railroad. The classic toy trains were already being built on a larger scale at the beginning of the 20th century for the nominal size 1 in 1:32 and 0 in 1:45. Well-known manufacturers included Bing and Märklin. It is typical that the locomotives can drive themselves thanks to a built-in drive. The size ratio between the model and the prototype (for example 1:87) is referred to as the scale, whereby common scales are each assigned a letter/number abbreviation (T, Z, N, TT, H0, 0 etc.; order starting with the largest reduction in size). The most common scales are - T, 3mm M 1:480 - Z, 6mm M 1:220 - N, 9mm M 1:160 - TT, 12mm M1:120 - H0, 16mm M1:87 - 0, 32 mm M1:45 - II, 64mm M1:22.5). The exhibition will feature 15 dioramas, showcases and model railroad plates in these gauges. There are also plans to build a G-gauge garden railroad in 45 mm. This scale reproduces a narrow-gauge railroad with an original gauge of approx. 1200 mm. Please telephone or register by email before visiting.

Permanent exhibition about the lyricist Karl Gottlieb Lappe

Karl Gottlieb Lappe - an almost forgotten poet (1773-1843). A permanent exhibition in Wusterhusen, near the seaside resort of Lubmin, is located in the vicarage of St. John's Church in Wusterhusen. The life and work of the poet Karl Lappe is documented here, and readings bring the poet's works closer. Karl Gottlieb Lappe was born on April 23, 1773 in Wusterhusen as the son of the vicar. In preparation for his studies, he attended the town school in Wolgast, whose principal was none other than Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten (1758-1818). Kosegarten, teacher, pastor, history professor and poet, recognized and encouraged the talents of his pupils, who included Karl Gottlieb Lappe and Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1810), the important Romantic painter. At Greifswald University, where Lappe studied theology, philology and philosophy, he became friends with Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860), a friendship that lasted beyond his student years. In 1798, Lappe succeeded Ernst Moritz Arndt as tutor to Kosegarten in Altenkirchen on the island of Rügen. From 1801 to 1817, Lappe was a teacher at Stralsund grammar school. For health reasons, he finally retired to the idyllic village of Pütte near Stralsund. Lappe died in Stralsund on October 28. Krüger: 038354 22234 Route of North German Romanticism: Wusterhusen vicarage - Romantic poetry Lappe's extensive oeuvre reflects everyday and political events as well as his deep love for his Pomeranian homeland. In the Karl Lappe exhibition in the vicarage, a map shows which places he visited and also described in his poems. Some of his poems were set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1828), Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and Robert Schumann (1810-1856).

Permanent exhibit: "400 Sheets of BEP (Butter Wrapping Paper) at the Rambow Local History Museum"

The Rambow Local History Museum is perhaps the only museum to display 400 sheets of butter-wrapping paper from 25 countries. The exhibition is complemented by 10 historic butter churns, 30 old butter molds, milk cans of various shapes, emergency banknotes, and stamps—all, of course, related to butter. The 400 sheets are stored in eight file folders. To fully appreciate the entire collection, you’ll need, above all, time. In return, you can experience a museum in a different way here. While enjoying your favorite drink, you’ll be treated to music of various genres and a few buttered sandwiches. Then you’ll immerse yourself in the creativity of graphic designers from different countries. What everyone usually overlooks in their daily consumption of butter will be revealed to you here. Butter is a spread that people have been using ever since they began milking cows for food. Butter is made almost exclusively from cow’s milk. Weihenstephan is one of the oldest dairies in the world and has been in operation for nearly 1,000 years. With this collection, the Rambow Local History Museum aims above all to convey the effort and work that goes into getting a pat of butter onto the table. Owner Peter Ramsch used to make butter by hand with a butter churn on his grandmother’s farm as a teenager, so he knows firsthand how much work it takes. The exhibition is complemented by 10 historic butter churns, 30 old butter molds, milk cans of various shapes, emergency banknotes, and stamps—all, of course, related to butter. DeafVentures is Germany’s first kitesurfing school to offer courses in sign language. Since 2018, the two founders, Marie Kohlen (sign language interpreter) and Pia Boni (VDWS-certified kitesurfing instructor), have been conducting their courses for the deaf on the island of Ummanz in the west of Rügen. In 2019, together with the VDWS, the two trained two native DGS speakers to become kite instructors, who now also teach the art of kitesurfing in sign language on Ummanz. In addition to theory and practical sessions on kitesurfing, the five-day courses always include SUP polo, a pizza night at the Tiki Bar of the UMMAII Surfhostel, and, most recently, a chance to try out the wing.
