Demmler House

The residential and commercial building designed by court architect Georg Adolph Demmler on the south shore of the Pfaffenteich was constructed in 1842 and is a striking example of bourgeois Neoclassical architecture. With its imposing corner tower and stately structure, it dominates the cityscape. Originally built as Demmler’s residence, it was later remodeled several times and now serves as a mixed-use residential and commercial building. On the south shore of the Pfaffenteich, the corner building at the intersection of Mecklenburgstraße and Arsenalstraße catches the eye: a commercial building with apartments and tower-like roof structures defines the site and brings it to life. Court architect Georg Adolph Demmler once lived here. When the south and west shores of the Pfaffenteich were developed in 1840—thereby extending the Old Town into the adjacent areas—Grand Duke Paul Friedrich presented his court architect, Georg Adolph Demmler, with a lakeside plot of land. This gift was a special recognition of the services the architect had rendered to the court. While also entrusted with the major construction project of the Arsenal, Demmler completed his residence—which was also designed as a commercial building—in 1842. On the Style The residence of Court Architect Georg Adolph Demmler was built in a prominent urban location on the southern shore of the Pfaffenteich as part of the expansion of the royal capital. Taking into account the prominent location of the new building and its visual impact from a distance, Demmler designed a stately structure that serves as a striking focal point, particularly due to its voluminous corner tower. Demmler’s historicizing Neoclassical design language was also reflected in his residence. The considerable variety and arrangement of the various architectural elements characterize the building as a stately bourgeois villa. The plastered, two-story half-timbered structure was built in an L-shape. As with many buildings in the Schwerin royal complex, it was constructed on piles. The interior remains in its original condition from the 1857 renovation. The floor plan has also remained unchanged. The historic doors have also been preserved. The stairwell and the cast-iron staircase with its elaborately decorated balusters also date from the time of the renovation.

Pentzin Memorial Park

The Pentzin Historic Farmstead is located in Retschow. The Pentzin Historic Farmstead in Retschow consists of a hall house dating from 1787, a barn from 1826, and a cottage for retired farmers from 1842. The main house displays objects from everyday rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottage also features a classroom exhibit. Also of interest are the exhibits commemorating the 1813 battle against Napoleon near Retschow. Agricultural implements are on display in the open area. The farm is still inhabited today and is partially operated. Carriage rides are available.

The "Schlossberg": Fortifications near Sassnitz

The so-called Schlossberg, near the former Werder forest house, is a rectangular earthwork near Sassnitz. Located on a forested moraine hill on the Steinbach near the former Werder forest lodge is the so-called “Schlossberg,” a roughly rectangular earthwork still approximately 2–8 meters high, which has been disturbed in the southwest by gravel extraction and a chalk quarry. On the north and east sides of the rampart, which measures approximately 100 x 180 m, outer ditches about 1.5 m deep are still preserved, while inner ditches of similar depth remain on the south side. To the north of the earthwork, three gate-like entrances are still visible today. On the eastern side of the earthwork, there is also a passageway. Pottery shards and flint artifacts were recovered from the “Schlossberg.” Despite the finds—most of which are uncharacteristic—dating the rampart remains difficult. At the “Eierbaron” in Freest, you can learn all about eggs and much more—for example, how chickens live. They offer guided tours, project days, and day trips for daycare centers, schools, families, and adults. You can learn about farming—for example, by collecting and tasting freshly laid eggs from the mobile coop—as well as enjoy the scent of the manure pile, start the day to the crowing of the rooster, or ride a donkey. Visitors can also check out large tractors and machinery and pet the goats. In addition, visitors can see how the eggs are sorted by size in a machine. Sustainable and ecologically sound agriculture is very important here. For example, the farm is committed to having the male chicks raised at a partner farm and the products then processed by Eierbaron Freest.

The KulturKonsum

Art and culture in Loitz, a small town on the River Peene. The KulturKonsum has not only become a meeting place for the local heritage association, but also for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. The KulturKonsum at Loitzer Peenestraße 8 is the home of the local heritage association. A lot has happened since 2014, when they took over the property. The gallery, with constantly changing exhibitions, has made a name for itself and the lectures and readings are a welcome change for the residents of the village and far beyond. The historic courtyards are a popular place to linger. Clubs and interest groups like to take advantage of the opportunity to experience a guided tour, chat over coffee and cake or watch films that tell the story of the development and growth as well as the history of the estate. Musicians from the region perform under the motto "Music in the courtyard". But the KulturFloss also brought them professional artists who spend their vacations on the Peene and perform at various locations along the river. On the occasion of the 775th anniversary of the town of Loitz, a "PeenestraßenGalerie" was created on the initiative of the association, in which painters and photographers participate. Old houses become eye-catchers again. There are concerts in the courtyard, readings in the gallery and barbecues in the summer. Incidentally, you can also say "I do" at this historic location. The KulturKonsum is a branch office of the Peenetal/Loitz registry office. Not only many people from Loitz now take advantage of the wide range of services on offer, but also numerous citizens from the surrounding villages and towns. This new meeting place is very popular. You can learn a lot about the history of the house during a guided tour. So, a visit is always worthwhile.

German House

The German House in Rehna - an unusual half-timbered house. The German House is one of the oldest houses in Rehna and also one of the most unusual half-timbered buildings in northern Germany. The German House has been a listed building since 1949. It was restored in 1952/53 and renovated from 1998 to 2003. Since 2004, the German House has served as the seat of the town library, the Plattdeutscher Verein to Rehna e.V., the Maurine-Radegast e.V. cultural initiative and the Volkssolidarität.

The Barth Bible

A very special Bible that was printed in Barth in 1588. At that time, the language spoken in this region was Middle Low German, and the Barth Bible is written precisely in this language. Duke Bogislaw XIII was the one who commissioned the printing of this Bible. Around 500 copies were printed and the Bible itself is a real work of art with beautiful woodcuts. Today, the Barth Bible is an important cultural asset and can be admired in various museums and libraries. There is even a Bible center in Barth itself, where you can learn all about the history of this special Bible.

The Saale Apostle Stones

To this day, it is a magical place to which visitors and locals alike make a pilgrimage: cowslips, buttercups and ash trees point the way to the Saale stone circle. Hidden deep in the Saal forest is a circle of 13 apostle stones. The stone circle consists of unevenly sized stones, some of which are arranged somewhat irregularly. Some of them have already fallen over. The temple is not far away. Is there a connection? In fact, it is a place of worship from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. To this day, it is a magical place to which guests and locals alike like to make a pilgrimage: cowslips, buttercups and ashes point the way to the Saale stone circle. They stand like apostles in the green spring forest, while the particularly colorful beech leaves rustle in autumn. Here a breeze, there a ray of evening sun, birdsong, gifts from visitors on the tree table, a walking stick leaning against the tree, warmth ... a magical place ... after work, vacation. The place is well hidden. Discover the enigmatic stones on a guided tour with the nature and landscape guides from the Southern Bodden Coast Tourist Office and listen to regular stories about the beauty of the woods and meadows along the way (May-September). On your own: The stone circle in the forest area south-east of Kückenshagen can be reached via the Saaler Straße "Kolonie", which leads to the edge of the forest. In the forest, turn left for approx. 420 m, then left at the wooden sign "Apostelsteine" to the small bridge on the right, which leads over a ditch. Follow the path lined with tree trunks, cross a short footbridge (be careful not to slip) and walk through the forest to the stone circle. (The navigation system helps!)

The sculpture "Rutschgefahr" stands in the middle of the greenery of Klink, close to the beach and the Strandläufer restaurant, on a simple concrete plinth. There are also 2 animals made of concrete and mosaic stones on the lawn.

A house full of surprises is located in Trassenheide. It guarantees fun for the whole family and the opportunity to take vacation photos that not everyone has! In Trassenheide on Usedom, a house stands on its head. Here guests can experience the familiar world the other way round: the roof is on the ground, the floor is suspended in the air. The entire interior is also upside down. This makes it possible to take entertaining vacation photos of guests standing comfortably on the roof, doing a handstand on the toilet bowl or simply lying on the ceiling.

The Original Schnurstein Spring - Lelkendorf

Not far from the town of Lelkendorf, you can reach the spring on foot through the middle of the forest after crossing two bridges. An adventure for young and old alike! Around 1830, two farmsteads were established between Neukalen and Lelkendorf. August-Friedrich Schnurstein bequeathed the property to his sons Ernst and Rudolf, known as Wittkopp and Schwattkopp. Ernst did not stay long; he sold his farm. Rudolf started a family and ran the farm until his death on September 18, 1973. Born in 1869, he thus lived to be 104 years old. Legend has it that he lived to such an advanced age because he drank “only” the iron-rich spring water that bubbled—and still bubbles—up from deep within his property.

Prora Documentation Center

The Prora Documentation Center provides information about the history of Prora and shows "MACHTUrlaub", the only permanent exhibition in Germany on the working and social history of the "Third Reich". The Prora Documentation Center is located in the historical complex in Prora, which was planned as the "KdF-Seebad Rügen". Prora is part of the Baltic seaside resort of Binz and is located on the Prorer Wiek, the most beautiful bay on the island of Rügen. The approximately 4.7 km-long complex was built here between 1936 and 1939 on behalf of the "NS-Gemeinschaft Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength through Joy") and was almost completed in its shell. The facility has been a listed building since 1992. Alongside the "Nazi Party Rally Grounds" in Nuremberg, it is the largest closed architectural legacy of the National Socialist era. 20,000 people were supposed to spend their vacations here at the same time. The "KdF-Bad der Zwanzigtausend" is not only an interesting example of the use of modernist architecture under National Socialism, but also an important socio-historical testimony to the efforts of the Nazi regime to pacify the workers, whose parties and organizations had been smashed in 1933, and to win them over to the war, living space and racial policies. Prora was intended to be both an expression of the proclaimed Nazi "national community" and a constructive element that helped to create it, thus acting as a propaganda tool to stabilize the system. After the start of the war, police battalions were trained in Prora for a time, some of which were then deployed behind the front lines in drastic criminal operations. During the GDR era, Prora became an NVA barracks and thus also a restricted military zone, and in the 1980s it was also the largest site for construction soldiers. Construction soldiers performed unarmed military service and were subjected to hard labor and harassment. The Bundeswehr initially took over Prora after reunification, but left after just two years. After long disputes about the appropriate use of the historic site, a modern vacation home is now being built in Prora. The Prora Documentation Center presents the permanent exhibition "MACHTUrlaub" with picture and text panels, audio and video stations and shows a film on the history of the complex in a continuous loop. Changing special exhibitions and events explore the themes in greater depth, and guided tours on foot and by bike are offered in the exhibition and on the grounds of the historic complex. Projects, workshops, seminars and other formats are part of the educational program.
