Catholic Church in Demmin

The Catholic parish, founded in the mid-19th century, had the church built in 1914–15 based on designs by the Berlin architect J. Welz. It served as the parish church for Pastors Adolf Noleweika and Heinrich Wessels (an honorary citizen of the city of Demmin). Between 1994 and 1996, the exterior of the brick-built neo-Gothic church underwent its first major restoration. The 45-meter-high tower, with its open belfry, is topped by a so-called “bishop’s miter.” Of the interior furnishings dating from the “Gründerzeit” period, the neo-Gothic winged altar with figures of the 12 Apostles, Mary with the Infant Jesus, and the pulpit—to which the sound cover was added later—have survived. The winged altar is the church’s crowning jewel and immediately catches the eye of visitors. It was dismantled in 1963 and restored in 2000, with missing parts replaced and the altar reassembled. The side panels and tabernacle of this altar, as well as a carved Stations of the Cross, are also among the highlights.

St. Anna Catholic Church, Schwerin

The Catholic Provost Church of St. Anna is located in the city center of Schwerin. The building blends in with the magnificent facades of the houses on Schlossstraße. It was built in the 18th century as the first Catholic church in Mecklenburg following the Reformation. The church is dedicated to St. Anne, the mother of Mary. Services and concerts are held there. The vast majority of churches in Mecklenburg have been Protestant since the Reformation. Construction of St. Anna on Schloßstraße in the Neoclassical style began in 1791. The church was consecrated four years later. The church is dedicated to St. Anna, the mother of Mary. Of the once-rich Neoclassical furnishings, only the pulpit remains today. The wooden “Anna Selbdritt” group dates from the Late Gothic period. The granite baptismal font was crafted at the Schwerin grinding mill and was a gift from the ruling duke. The tabernacle, cross, and a bronze relief are works of modern church art from the 1980s. The church windows depict various saints and Nils Stensen, whose work in Schwerin is also specially honored through additional bronze reliefs inside the church and on its exterior walls. St. Anna possesses a significant collection of books and writings from the past 400 years, some of which are displayed in exhibitions.

The writer Walter Kempowski was born in Rostock in 1929 and has created a literary monument to his hometown with the novels of the "German Chronicle." The honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city donated parts of his literary archive to Rostock as early as 1993, which are now on display in a permanent exhibition. Part of writer Walter Kempowski’s literary archive has been housed in the monastery buildings of the “Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz” since 1993. Between 1993 and 2001, visitors could view the archival materials in two rooms of Building 1. Since November 13, 2002, the archive has been housed in Building 3. This has opened up entirely new possibilities for presenting the life and work of Walter Kempowski. The author Walter Kempowski is one of the most significant and widely read German postwar authors. With the novels of the “German Chronicle,” he has created a literary monument to his hometown of Rostock. In particular, the novels *Tadellöser und Wolff*, *Aus großer Zeit*, and *Schöne Aussicht* have introduced the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to an audience of millions. Through the local setting of the novels’ plots on the one hand and the literary engagement with German social and intellectual history in the first half of the 20th century on the other, Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania become a panorama and setting for national remembrance culture. Since 1993, the writer Walter Kempowski has made part of his literary archive available to his hometown of Rostock. With the reopening of the exhibition (on the occasion of the conferral of an honorary doctorate by the University of Rostock in 2002) at Klosterhof 3, the rooms were designed according to the novel’s specific characteristics and the contexts of his works.

When the year blossoms, we cordially invite you to Woserin. You can take a tour of the workshop and the wood-burning kiln, try your hand at the wheel if the weather is fine and browse through our ceramics exhibition. Once again this year, it will be possible to visit the Woserin village church. It will be open to interested visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. In summer temperatures, the Woseriner See lake is ideal for a refreshing dip. A visit to the (mosaic) bus stop is also recommended. There are also three other Kunst Offen events in Woserin this year. The Pankraz group crowns the end of our weekend with a concert in the church in Woserin. They enchant their listeners with their setting of German-language poetry, their own texts and inimitable handmade music.
