" The honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city donated parts of his literary archive to Rostock as early as 1993, which are now on display in a permanent exhibition. Part of writer Walter Kempowski’s literary archive has been housed in the monastery buildings of the “Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz” since 1993. Between 1993 and 2001, visitors could view the archival materials in two rooms of Building 1. Since November 13, 2002, the archive has been housed in Building 3. This has opened up entirely new possibilities for presenting the life and work of Walter Kempowski. The author Walter Kempowski is one of the most significant and widely read German postwar authors. With the novels of the “German Chronicle,” he has created a literary monument to his hometown of Rostock. In particular, the novels *Tadellöser und Wolff*, *Aus großer Zeit*, and *Schöne Aussicht* have introduced the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to an audience of millions. Through the local setting of the novels’ plots on the one hand and the literary engagement with German social and intellectual history in the first half of the 20th century on the other, Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania become a panorama and setting for national remembrance culture. Since 1993, the writer Walter Kempowski has made part of his literary archive available to his hometown of Rostock. With the reopening of the exhibition (on the occasion of the conferral of an honorary doctorate by the University of Rostock in 2002) at Klosterhof 3, the rooms were designed according to the novel’s specific characteristics and the contexts of his works.

Kempowski Archive Rostock: Literary Legacy at the Holy Cross Monastery

In the heart of the Hanseatic city of Rostock, the Kempowski Archive preserves a significant portion of the literary archive of Walter Kempowski—one of the most widely read postwar German authors. Housed in the historic monastery buildings of the “Monastery of the Holy Cross,” the permanent exhibition has offered insights into the life and work of the Rostock native since 1993.

Walter Kempowski and his literary home, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Walter Kempowski was born in Rostock in 1929 and has created a lasting literary legacy for the city and the entire region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania through his novels. Works such as Tadellöser und Wolff, Aus großer Zeit, and Schöne Aussicht—all part of the “German Chronicle”—introduced Rostock and the North German region to an audience of millions. The plots of the novels interweave local history with German social and intellectual history of the first half of the 20th century.

The Exhibition: Rooms Designed According to Work and Novel World

Since November 13, 2002, the archive has been housed in Building 3 of the monastery complex. The redesign of the rooms is based on Kempowski’s individual novels and the contexts of his works. The exhibition was opened in this form on the occasion of the University of Rostock conferring an honorary doctorate upon him and has since offered significantly more space for the presentation of archival materials than before.
