Heinrich Schliemann Memorial

Neubukow

You can experience Heinrich Schliemann’s “Dream of Troy” at the memorial site in Neubukow, located between Wismar and Bad Doberan. It is right next to the Neubukow church. Discover the life and work of Neubukow’s most famous son—Heinrich Schliemann—the discoverer of ancient Troy. He was born on January 6, 1822, in the Neubukow parsonage as the fifth child of Pastor Ernst Schliemann. Today, the memorial is located in the former rector’s house (built in 1790) at Am Brink 1. Here you can admire original artifacts such as jugs, bowls, and cups that the archaeologist, born in Neubukow in 1822, excavated in Troy. Display panels with photos and explanations document the life and work of Heinrich Schliemann. Our romantic museum garden invites you to linger. With a little luck, you might spot squirrels, green woodpeckers, and other wildlife here. A short nature trail showcases various archaeological finds from the region.

Dutch Windmill in Neubukow

Dutch Windmill in Neubukow

Neubukow

The gallery-style Dutch windmill in Neubukow has a long history. The gallery-style Dutch windmill, with its octagonal base, was built in 1910 with an automatic wind vane and traditional wooden sails. The mill body and the cap were set on a typical eight-sided brick base. In 1937, the sails were converted to so-called “Bilau-style wind vanes,” steel mill sails developed by the flight officer Bilau. The mill is the only one of its kind in the new federal states to have such preserved sails, which also boast the greatest span of 27 meters for this type. Both the windmill mechanism and the grinding mechanism are still operational. The mill sails were restored in 1981. The mill is privately owned.

Damshagen church

Damshagen church

Damshagen

The Damshagen church is a brick building from the 14th century with remarkable architectural details and historic chapels. An important testimony to the history of Klützer Winkel. St. Thomas Church is one of the old churches from the time of the German mission and settlement of the Klützer Winkel. The brick building was constructed in three sections at the beginning of the 14th century. The entire outer walls of the nave were built in Wendish bond. The single-nave church building with the externally buttressed choir with a 5/8 end was remodeled several times both inside and out. The Gothic windows on the outside were modernized. Parts of the original zigzag frieze on the nave have been preserved. Chapels were added to the north side of the nave. One serves as a burial chapel, the other, originally the staircase to the patronal stalls, is now used as a mortuary.

Neuburg

Parish of Neuburg The village church of Neuburg, which is part of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Neuburg in the district of Nordwestmecklenburg, is a brick building. It was first mentioned in a document in 1219. The architectural style, which reflects the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, indicates that the building was constructed at the beginning of the 13th century. Construction of the square tower was completed in 1361. The baroque altar and pulpit date from the beginning of the 18th century. Extensive restoration work was carried out in the 1970s and 1980s. The tower was re-roofed in 1992. The church is open from May to September from around 10 am to 4 pm. The key is otherwise available from the bakery next door or in the vicarage.

Steffenshagen Church

Steffenshagen Church

Steffenshagen

The church in Steffenshagen—a branch church of the Cistercian monastery in Althof/Doberan (founded in 1171 and 1186, respectively)—is one of the largest and most imposing village churches in Mecklenburg. The first documented mention of the German settlement village of Steffenshagen (Stephaneshagen) dates back to 1273. Image author: Chpagenkopf. Licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License The church in Steffenshagen—a branch church of the Cistercian monastery of Althof/Doberan (founded in 1171 or 1186)—is one of the largest and most stately village churches in Mecklenburg. The first documented mention of the German settlement of Steffenshagen (Stephaneshagen) dates back to 1273. The choir (eastern part of the church) is believed to have been consecrated about 30 years earlier. This section and the three eastern bays of the three-nave nave were built in the Gothic style. Three additional bays and the tower were reconstructed in the 19th century and consecrated in 1866. Ten bands of molded bricks featuring depictions of animals (griffin, lion, panther, tiger) and two vine leaf friezes symbolize the pagan-demonic environment of that time, against which Christianity was directed. In a sense, the twelve apostles stand guard in the so-called priest’s portal as a protection against this world. Although the church and congregation have been among the poor for centuries, they possess several valuable exhibits. The church was renovated from 1965 to 1973. During this time, the rooms beneath the organ loft were also furnished. Here, the congregation has space to hold services, community evenings, and classes even during the cold season. Sonnenkamp Monastery

Sonnenkamp Monastery

Neukloster

The monastery church with the oldest stained glass windows in northern Germany, the provost's building and the bell tower are all buildings that have been preserved. The town of Neukloster lies to the east of Wismar on Lake Neukloster. Only the monastery church, the bell tower and the provost building remain of the former Benedictine monastery, now the Sonnenkamp monastery, which was founded there in 1219 under the name Campus Solis. The monastery was secularized in 1555 as part of the Reformation. Large parts of the grounds subsequently fell into disrepair. However, a visit to the monastery church is still worthwhile today. Here visitors will find some of the oldest stained glass in northern Germany. They were created around 1250, depict various saints and are located in the choir's group of three windows. Various herbs grow in the monastery garden, which is modeled on the one in St. Gallen in Switzerland. The altar of the Virgin Mary was created around 1500 by an unknown master. The carved predella consists of parts of another altar and is significantly older (around 1420). It depicts scenes and figures of saints. The monastery church also has a bell tower, which was built at the beginning of the 15th century and originally had three bells. One bell was lost in the Second World War, but was recast in May 2002 so that Neukloster now has a full peal of bells again. The bell tower attracts visitors with exhibitions and the monastery church with its art treasures. The stepped gable of the provostry is a special gem of brick Gothic architecture.

Casual, abstract, emotional: Jens Kubitz presents his works in the Kulturwohnzimmer. Emotional, playful, captivating: This is how Jens Kubitz’s works come across, as he invites us this year on a brief journey through the treasures of his art. Through his down-to-earth nature and his unpretentious approach to art, he manages to create vibrant compositions that captivate viewers and allow them to revel in their emotions. “If people like it, then that’s good,” he says of his art, “the rest doesn’t interest me.” It is precisely this direct and honest trait that makes his art so special. That’s why we’re very excited to welcome him to the Kulturwohnzimmer. Over a drink, you’ll have the opportunity to strike up a conversation with him. Hours Jan.–Dec.: Thu–Sun 12–6 p.m.

Art between dream and reality

Art between dream and reality

Damekow

A unicorn made of papier-mâché and colorful watercolors and acrylic paintings that seem to come from dreams. They combine fantasy with profound themes and invite you to marvel and reflect. My artistic work encompasses various forms of expression that are characterized by fantasy and personal reflection. One outstanding work is a unicorn made of papier-mâché, designed in the size of a small horse. It deliberately shows only the front, which creates a special, inviting presence. This sculpture is a reminder that miracles are possible in life and encourages us to rejoice in the small, inexplicable moments. The photograph of the unicorn is displayed on canvas so that the images inspire the viewer to wonder and reflect. In addition to sculpture, I dedicate myself to painting, especially watercolors and acrylic paintings. These works reflect my thoughts, feelings and personal experiences. The paintings are often lively and colorful, but at the same time seem to have sprung from dreams. Behind the playful and light compositions are deeper themes that preoccupy me, such as dealing with my own roots or emotional processes. The watercolor and acrylic paintings invite the viewer to take their time and contemplate the works in peace. They offer space for one's own thoughts and interpretations and create an atmosphere in which the moment of pause and reflection takes center stage. My works are not intended to convey a clear message, but rather to invite the viewer to immerse themselves in the worlds depicted and discover their own emotions and thoughts.

Colors of Life

Colors of Life

Wismar

Art therapist and artist Kristin Damaschke presents “Lebensfarben” – art for the soul, a studio for mindfulness, abstract paintings, and unique pieces for women. As an artist, I draw inspiration from the powerful interplay of colors, shapes, and light to create works that touch the soul and inspire viewers to perceive life in a new way. In my studio “Lebensfarben,” I create abstract paintings that invite viewers to discover their own inner world and delve into the depths of their own feelings and thoughts. This art is more than a visual experience—it speaks to the soul, evokes emotions, and opens up new perspectives. My work is inspired by the beauty and diversity of life, by the tender and powerful moments that shape us. Every painting created in the studio is unique and reflects the diverse facets of human experience—from soft tones and harmonious color gradients to powerful, expressive forms. The works invite you to let yourself be guided by the dynamism and energy of the colors and to feel a deeper connection to your own self. I believe that art gives us the opportunity to see ourselves and our world in new ways. It opens doors to emotions that often remain hidden in everyday life and creates space for new ideas and inspiration. In my studio, the focus is on experiencing this art, feeling it, and allowing it to transform you. It is a place of inspiration, encouragement, and freedom—for every woman who wishes to unlock her inner strength through art. At the “Lebensfarben” studio, I offer women a space where they can rediscover themselves through art. For me, the creative process is a path to self-awareness and an expression of strength and individuality. My work is about inspiring women to unleash their own creative power and connect with their unique potential. Abstract art and light paintings are not only a visual delight but also a tool for discovering and expressing one’s own creativity. “Colors of Life” is an invitation to discover your own colors of life and to paint with them. Here, art becomes an experience that illuminates the moment and touches the heart.

Timmendorf Lighthouse

Timmendorf Lighthouse

Insel Poel / OT Timmendorf

The Timmendorf Lighthouse is one of the landmarks of the island of Poel and one of the oldest 19th-century lighthouses still in operation. Visitors arriving from the sea first see the Timmendorf Lighthouse. The beacon was first put into operation in 1871 and raised to its current height (21 m) in 1931. As a navigational aid at the entrance to the seaport of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, the lighthouse remains of great importance today for the increasing maritime traffic. A second, smaller “lighthouse” stands west of Gollwitz, in the north of the island of Poel.
