Karstadt and Krämerstraße
Rudolph Karstadt founded his later empire in Wismar in 1881.
The four-storey Art Nouveau building was the first flagship store of Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH. The trained retailer Rudolph Karstadt founded his future empire in Wismar on May 14, 1881 with just one employee. The four-storey Art Nouveau building is the first flagship store of Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH. "His first store was still called "Tuch-, Manufactur- und Confectionsgeschäft Karstadt". Rudolph Karstadt introduced the previously unusual business policy of fixed prices and cash payment. Karstadt maximized his profits by cutting out the middleman, purchasing goods centrally and buying directly from the manufacturers. The name of Krämerstraße, with its many attractive gabled houses, refers to its former and current use as a shopping street.
The first Karstadt flagship store in Wismar
The Krämerstraße in Wismar is a piece of German economic history. This is where the trained retailer Rudolph Karstadt founded his first store on May 14, 1881 - at that time still under the name "Tuch-, Manufactur- und Confectionsgeschäft Karstadt". With just one employee, he laid the foundations for what would later become a retail empire in the Hanseatic city on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Pioneer of modern trade policyKarstadt introduced business principles in Wismar that were anything but self-evident at the time: Fixed prices and cash payment instead of negotiation and credit transactions. He cut out the middleman, handled the purchase of goods centrally and sourced his goods directly from the manufacturers. This unusual concept gave rise to today's Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH. The striking four-storey Art Nouveau building that housed the flagship store is still an eye-catcher in Wismar's city center today.
The Krämerstraße - historic shopping street with gabled houses
The name of Krämerstraße already reveals its history: it has been one of Wismar's central trading areas for centuries. Gabled houses worth seeing line up along the street, reminiscent of the Hanseatic city's medieval merchant tradition. Anyone visiting Wismar - whether on the way to Rostock, Stralsund or the Baltic Sea peninsula of Fischland-Darß-Zingst - should take time to stroll along this lively street.
