The Old Port has largely retained its harbor basin in terms of location and specific design since 1211. The harbor continues to be important as a landing stage for excursion steamers, a berth for leisure captains and traditional ships such as the Kogge and the Atalanta. The port, shipping and trade in Wismar grow rapidly - important goods are handled: wines from Spain, Italy and France, furs and wood from Russia, furs from Norway, also cloth, silk and wool, but above all fish and spices, wax, malt and salt. Trade across the Baltic Sea and inland flourished. The heyday of the Hanseatic League begins and Wismar becomes a prosperous city. Wismar, the beautiful and powerful, earns its place as an important city in the Hanseatic League. Cruise ships can also be admired from the quayside. It is advisable to book berths in advance with the harbour master. Sanitary facilities are open at the waterway rest area in Kopenhagener Straße from April 1 to October 30. The Wismar Harbour Festival is also held here every year at the beginning of June.

The impulse that makes me want to paint. Sometimes I pick something up, put it on the canvas - and it prompts me to do more. I could slow myself down to follow a previously conceived idea, but the idea is from yesterday, is no longer important, so I follow the new idea. Sometimes the idea and the new idea come very close and sometimes the idea dissolves into a new expanse. So every picture has its own story, its own path and its own context. Jürgens, a representative of New Realism, presents a selection of his works in bright rooms and provides a glimpse of panel paintings currently in progress. In a world of chronic over-staging, Jürgens is in search of the concrete, of precision and clarity. When a pictorial idea flows through the soul via the experience in the eye and finds new formulation via the brush on the canvas, then that is pure painting! Fashions and trends are ignored. Realistic painting aims to depict things in life precisely as they are, without embellishment. But what is realism anyway? Experts argue about this question. After all, no matter how "lifelike" the artist may depict something, his painting always bears his own signature. All painting is an abstraction, and so is realism. Portraits of people and animals, still lifes and seascapes - deceptively beautiful and often disturbing. Opening hours: Jan.-Dec.: Mon-Sun 2-7 p.m.
