Garvensdorf Manor House

We at the Gutshaus Garvensdorf Association bring people together through our work.

Our film screenings attract not only local residents—vacationers also come here to enjoy unique films that are off the beaten path. In 2022, our association was even awarded the M-V Cinema Culture Prize for its wonderful annual program. About the history of the house: Since its construction around 1830 in the original Neoclassical style, the Garvensdorf manor house has had an eventful history. Owners changed frequently, and with them the appearance of the house, depending on the tastes of the time and financial resources—whether neo-Gothic turrets, GDR-style concrete plaster, or solar panels. After the expropriation of the last lord of the manor, von Platen, in 1945, the house housed refugees and later a kindergarten, the country doctor, and the municipal administration; a cinema and cultural hall were established. After 1989, the manor house unfortunately stood empty. Since 1995, we have been operating the manor house as the Gutshaus Garvensdorf Association. In our small but charming cinema, we screen films that aren’t necessarily shown in the big multiplexes—films with deeper messages, thought-provoking films, and wonderful documentaries. We also host several art festivals and other events here. So stay tuned! Please note that the manor house is only open for events. Please feel free to contact us if you’d like a guided tour outside of scheduled times. We’re sure we can make that work. Thank you very much.

Garvensdorf Manor – History and Cinema Culture in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The Garvensdorf Manor House in Garvensdorf is one of the most charming cultural centers on the German Baltic Sea coast. Built around 1830 in the Neoclassical style, the building has had an eventful history: changes in ownership, architectural transformations ranging from a neo-Gothic turret to GDR-era concrete plaster, and uses as refugee housing, a kindergarten, and a municipal administration office—the house reflects the history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in a unique way.

Award-winning community cinema off the beaten path

Since 1995, the Gutshaus Garvensdorf association has operated the building as a vibrant cultural venue. The small in-house cinema screens films rarely seen in large multiplexes—documentaries, thought-provoking works, and films with deeper messages. The program appeals not only to local residents but also to vacationers seeking unique experiences during a visit to the Baltic Sea region between Stralsund, Greifswald, and the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. In 2022, the association was awarded the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Cinema Culture Prize for its annual program.

Events and guided tours at the Garvensdorf Manor House

The manor house opens its doors exclusively for events—in addition to film screenings, art festivals and other cultural events are held here. Anyone planning a guided tour outside of the regular event dates can contact the association directly, which organizes individual tours by arrangement.
