Rerik Local History Museum – Local History in the Oldest School Building

The Rerik Local History Museum was founded in 1953 and has been housed in the old school since 1997—one of the oldest surviving buildings in the Baltic Sea resort. The permanent exhibition documents the development of Rerik from 1820 onward and provides insights into the history of this small community on the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast, between Wismar to the east and Fischland-Darß-Zingst to the west.

Art, Fossils, and Maritime Collection

A dedicated gallery displays paintings and drawings of the local landscape, including works by the local artist Ernst Schriever. The exhibition is complemented by ship models, a collection of seabirds, and an extensive collection of fossils of marine animals—similar to those found in museums along the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Fishing History and the Model of a Zeesen Boat

A special highlight is the section on the history of the local fishing industry. A model of a traditional Zeesen boat illustrates how fishing was once carried out in the lagoon and coastal waters of this region—a practice that was also typical of the Bodden waters off Fischland-Darß-Zingst or around Rügen and Usedom.

Schmiedeberg

Schmiedeberg

Rerik

The Schmiedeberg is a popular vantage point on the beach in Rerik. The Schmiedeberg rises up proudly on Rerik beach. It is the remains of an old Slavic castle rampart from the 8th century. A large part of it fell victim to a storm surge in 1872. Alongside Cape Arkona, the Schmiedeberg is the only known castle rampart directly on the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Today, the Schmiedeberg is a popular excursion destination. Visitors are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Salzhaff, the Wustrow peninsula and the Baltic Sea. There is a small, airy pavilion where you can recover from the exertions of the climb and enjoy the view.
