Heringsdorf Church

Heringsdorf Church

Seebad Heringsdorf

The church in Heringsdorf belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Heringsdorf church owes its construction to the rapid development of seaside tourism on the island of Usedom in the 19th century. The Waldkirche in Bansin, completed in 1939, also owes its existence to seaside tourism. The church was built of traditional brick according to plans by Ludwig Persius, a student of Schinkel. Both Frederick William IV and many Heringsdorf residents, as well as wealthy guests from Berlin, were among the supporters of the church’s construction. The church was consecrated in September 1848 and was expanded and renovated in 1914.

Benz Cultural Mill

Benz Cultural Mill

Benz

Historic Dutch windmill (built in 1818) with a largely preserved and intact interior. Visitors can trace the process from grain to flour and other grain products using the old machinery. In the bakery, hikers and visitors will find the perfect place to take a break with coffee and cake. The Benz Cultural Mill, built starting in 1818, is the last surviving Dutch-style windmill on the island of Usedom. With its typical eight-post construction and three half-timbered floors, it impressively showcases the miller’s craft and traditional technology. The mill remained in operation until 1972, after which milling operations ceased with the death of the last miller, Werner Jahnke. Prior to that, around 1935, the mill had been converted to electric power, with the main shaft replaced by gear transmissions. The mill has become known beyond the country’s borders as a subject of the German-American artist Lyonel Feininger. In 1910, Feininger drew the Benzer Dutch windmill in charcoal; today, this is the only known depiction of the mill from the time it was powered by wind.  In 1973, the mill was acquired by the renowned painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, who used it as a studio and exhibition space. Thanks to his efforts, the structure was preserved and secured as a technical monument. He initiated urgent preservation work, such as re-shingling the roof with beech shingles. After Niemeyer-Holstein’s death in 1984, the mill was transferred to the municipality of Benz. With the founding of the “Kulturmühle Benz e.V.” association, the mill was developed into a cultural gathering place. The mill underwent extensive renovation in the 2000s, during which the cap, the wind rose, and the exterior cladding were replaced. Today, the mill attracts tourists as well as history and technology enthusiasts alike; guided tours are available upon request. In addition to its impressive historical technology, the mill grounds also offer a place to relax, and visitors can enjoy regional delicacies in the bakery.

Usedom Art Gallery

Usedom Art Gallery

Benz

The Usedom Art Cabinet is located in Benz on Usedom, next to the medieval church that the German-American Bauhaus artist Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) often visited and depicted in his art until his death. The church in Benz was the artist’s favorite, second only to the church in Gelmeroda near Weimar. The Kunst-Kabinett is located next to the village church, which Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) designed on numerous occasions. The Usedom Art Cabinet is the only place on the island where unique works by the famous Bauhaus artist are on permanent display... along with a 1897 Cleveland, Ohio, bicycle. Lyonel Feininger used a bicycle of this brand to explore Usedom and find his subjects. It is therefore no surprise that the Usedom Feininger Bicycle Route begins at the church. The gallery also presents rotating exhibitions of paintings and sculptures by contemporary artists.

Lassaner Mühle Museum

Lassaner Mühle Museum

Lassan

The Lassan Watermill, now a local history museum, offers a fascinating journey through the town’s history and the milling trade. Experience the historic machinery and a unique exhibition on local craftsmanship. The former Lassan Watermill, an impressive 19th-century structure, tells the long history of the town of Lassan and its residents. The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1410 and played an important role in the local economy. In 1803, however, it was destroyed by fire before being rebuilt on its original foundations in the 19th century. Originally, the mill was used for flour production until around 1930, powered by an overshot waterwheel, before it was converted to diesel and later electric motors. The mill remained in operation until 1976, supplying the surrounding communities. After it was decommissioned, the building stood vacant for several years until dedicated citizens took on the restoration in 1982. Thanks to these efforts, the mill was opened as a local history museum on July 9, 1988. Today, visitors can admire the preserved technical equipment, including original machinery and roller mills, which offer a glimpse into the traditional milling craft. In addition to milling technology, the museum documents the history of the town of Lassan from its beginnings as a fishing village in the 12th century through to its heyday in the 19th century, when up to 200 carpenters were working in the town. A special exhibition showcases the woodworking trade between 1890 and 1910, when Lassan was famous for its carpentry. The history of fishing and the harbor is also vividly presented. The watermill, which is a listed historic building, is an important testament to the region’s industrial and artisanal history and offers a unique opportunity to experience the town’s past up close.

Ahlbeck pier

Ahlbeck pier

Seebad Ahlbeck

The Ahlbeck pier is considered the landmark of the island of Usedom and, like most of the nearby spa architecture villas, dates back to the century before last. Built in 1898, the "centenary" with its red roof, four green towers and 280-metre-long jetty is the only remaining pier of its kind on the German Baltic coast. Loriot also used this very special place for his film "Pappa ante Portas". In addition to a restaurant, it also offers a landing stage for excursion boats. Every year in July, the Ahlbeck Summer Festival and the Long Night of Music take place on the concert square and on Ahlbeck's promenade. Visitors can look forward to various regional and national bands, a fire show, a hands-on circus for children and a historical swimwear show.

Koserow pier

Koserow pier

Koserow

The new Koserow pier extends 280m into the Baltic Sea in the shape of a wave. Opened in 2021, it offers 2 large platforms that invite you to sit, enjoy and breathe in the Baltic Sea air. They can also be used as a sunset cinema. There are benches to linger on both platforms as well as on the 280-metre-long bridge itself. At least eight swivel beach chairs will soon be installed on it. The large open spaces can be used as a sunset cinema, but also for smaller concerts. The bridge railing is illuminated with LED strips so that the wooden wave is also an eye-catcher at night. And because the word "experience" unites all the senses, there is a small but fine wine and cocktail bar on the bridgehead in a specially converted Ape to delight the palate and throat. Koserow has also created a link to the Vineta saga. A bell tower was erected on the bridgehead to remind visitors of the legend by ringing the "Vineta" bells on Easter Sunday, which says: "If you are a Sunday child, you can see the town of Vineta rise from the sea on Easter Sunday". The bells originally came from a church in Lower Saxony. However, as many guests had expressed the wish for the bells to ring more frequently, they now ring out every Wednesday at 4 pm following the telling of the Vineta legend. Every bridge needs a little art, says Nadine Riethdorf (Koserow's spa director), referring to the latest addition to Koserow, a statue made of Corten steel. A man with a bell in his hand looking out over the Baltic Sea. Is it a fisherman or the bell-ringer of Vineta - which is better suited to the amber village?

Zinnowitz pier with diving gondola

Zinnowitz pier with diving gondola

Zinnowitz

The diving gondola at the head of the 315-meter-long pier offers you the opportunity to take a dry-footed dive into the Baltic Sea and get to know the habitat beneath the waves. As early as 1897, a jetty was built in Zinnowitz to transport tourists by boat as part of the developing resort traffic. The pier was built in 1908. After the Second World War, it was demolished due to weathering damage. In autumn 1993, the current pier, which measures 315 meters, was inaugurated. It bears the name Vineta. At the end of the pier is the diving gondola, which invites you to take a special kind of underwater walk. During the 30-minute journey to the seabed, visitors gain an interesting insight into the Baltic Sea habitat. The staff provide information about the Baltic Sea, its inhabitants and their need for protection and explain the creatures that can be observed depending on visibility and the time of year, e.g. tiny green algae, jellyfish, shrimps and sometimes fish.
