Lassaner Mühle Museum

The Lassan Watermill, now a local history museum, offers a fascinating journey through the town’s history and the milling trade.

Experience the historic machinery and a unique exhibition on local craftsmanship. The former Lassan Watermill, an impressive 19th-century structure, tells the long history of the town of Lassan and its residents. The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1410 and played an important role in the local economy. In 1803, however, it was destroyed by fire before being rebuilt on its original foundations in the 19th century. Originally, the mill was used for flour production until around 1930, powered by an overshot waterwheel, before it was converted to diesel and later electric motors. The mill remained in operation until 1976, supplying the surrounding communities. After it was decommissioned, the building stood vacant for several years until dedicated citizens took on the restoration in 1982. Thanks to these efforts, the mill was opened as a local history museum on July 9, 1988. Today, visitors can admire the preserved technical equipment, including original machinery and roller mills, which offer a glimpse into the traditional milling craft. In addition to milling technology, the museum documents the history of the town of Lassan from its beginnings as a fishing village in the 12th century through to its heyday in the 19th century, when up to 200 carpenters were working in the town. A special exhibition showcases the woodworking trade between 1890 and 1910, when Lassan was famous for its carpentry. The history of fishing and the harbor is also vividly presented. The watermill, which is a listed historic building, is an important testament to the region’s industrial and artisanal history and offers a unique opportunity to experience the town’s past up close.

Lassaner Mühle Museum – Hands-On Local History

The Lassaner Mühle Museum in Lassan, near the island of Usedom on the East Pomeranian Baltic Sea coast, is one of the region’s most remarkable local history museums. The former watermill was first mentioned in a document in 1410 and played a central role in the town’s economy for centuries. The current museum building, dating from the 19th century and constructed on the old foundations after a fire in 1803, is now a designated historic landmark.

Original milling technology and carpentry from Western Pomerania

Inside the museum, original machinery and roller mills have been preserved, offering an authentic glimpse into the traditional milling craft. The mill remained in operation until 1976. In addition to the milling technology, the museum traces the history of Lassan from its origins as a medieval fishing village to the heyday of the carpentry trade in the 19th century—when up to 200 carpenters worked in the town. A separate exhibition is dedicated to woodworking between 1890 and 1910, as well as the history of fishing and the harbor.

Restoration and Museum Opening in 1988

After the mill stood vacant for several years following its decommissioning, dedicated citizens began restoration work in 1982. On July 9, 1988, the local history museum opened its doors. It thus also stands as a testament to civic engagement in preserving the cultural heritage of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
