Salt spray in Damgarten harbor - Old Salt Road

Old Salt Road smuggling route As a navigable river, the Recknitz was of economic importance for many centuries: goods were transported up and down the river, especially salt from Bad Sülze. The sought-after raw material was loaded in sacks onto barge and shipped via Damgarten, Dändorf and Dierhagen to the Grand Ducal salt warehouse in Wismar. Salt was a coveted commodity and trade in it was highly regulated. This attracted many a smuggler, especially as the Recknitz was a border river. In the 17th century, an incident near Pantlitz led to entanglements between the ducal Mecklenburg government in Schwerin and the Pomeranian side. A manor owner living in Daskow suddenly demanded tolls for free passage. An armed conflict ensued and a salt barge was sunk. The wreck continued to obstruct shipping traffic on the Recknitz until the end of the 18th century. The replica of the salt barge is a reminder of the former salt route and the smuggling of the white gold. Did you know that ... ... you can smuggle again today - and without any danger? Ramona Ponomarew-John and Karl Michael Constin show sculptures and paintings of the Maasai in ceramic installations as well as drawings of traditional Suibukuga ink painting. Karl - Michael Constin was born in Bützow and lives in Jürgenshagen. He studied at the graphic art and design school in Anklam and became a master student of the Japan-based artist Professor Heinrich Radloff. His studies were followed by a three-month stay in Japan. This was followed by professional assignments in advertising agencies and educational institutions. In 2005, Karl-Michael Constin began a one-year study visit to Kyoto, Japan. There he studied calligraphy, ikebana and traditional suibokuga ink painting. He has taken part in numerous exhibitions throughout Germany. The gallery shows ink drawings that were created during his stay in Barbizon / France. Ramona Ponomarew - John was born in Schönberg / Mecklenburg and lives in Plüschow. As a secondary school teacher for art and foreign languages, she led the "School against Racism" and "Fair Trade School" projects at her school. With this in mind, she established relationships with schools in Tanzania. Her repeated stays in Africa and her contacts with the Maasai ethnic group are reflected in her ceramic installations. Schill memorial plaque

This stone commemorates Ferdinand von Schill, a Prussian officer who fought against the French occupying forces in Stralsund. On May 25, 1809, Ferdinand von Schill rode into the town of Stralsund at the head of his regiment. A few days later, the freedom fighter fell here in Fährstraße, fatally shot by a bullet. On the night of May 31, 1835, his admirers embedded this memorial plaque in the pavement at the exact spot where Schill had fallen.

The memorial commemorates the Prussian officer Ferdinand von Schill. The monument to Ferdinand von Schill was inaugurated on the 100th anniversary of his death in 1909. It is located in the Schill grounds near Olof-Palme-Platz.

The 57-year-old is one of the few butchers still active in MV. In the run-up to Christmas, the country butcher's shop in Schlieffenberg near Teterow (Rostock district) is a hive of activity. Home slaughtering has had its own rituals for generations. "When the pig hangs on the hook, it's time to pour the wine," goes an old saying. High spirits were part of the slaughter, even later at the feast for everyone involved. Traditionally, Wellfleisch, coarse bread and Köm were served. The last sip was taken just before the butcher left the farm. The trained farmer set up his own country butcher's shop on his property over 20 years ago. In this way, the family tradition of home butchery, which his grandfather and father once ran as a sideline, is being continued. Customers bring their animals themselves and hours later everything is professionally cut up and returned. Mirow lock

The lock is located just outside the center of Mirow. It is also known as the gateway to the Müritz, as the Kleinseenplatte and the Müritz were artificially connected here in 1935/36. The Mirow lock is a technical monument to the town of Mirow. It is part of the Müritz-Havel waterway and is still operated manually by a lock keeper. The lock has a length of 56 m and a width of 6.6 m. Large lifting gates enclose the water chamber and a height difference of approx. 3.5 m. The lock gates open every hour on the hour from April to the end of October.

Rheinsberg Castle

Rheinsberg Castle, picturesquely situated on Lake Grienericksee, allows us to immerse ourselves in the 18th century. Crown Prince Friedrich, later King Friedrich II and his brother Prince Heinrich developed this castle into a place that has lost none of its magic to this day. Just under 100 km from the center of Berlin in northern Brandenburg, Rheinsberg Castle is located in the picturesque village of the same name on the shores of Lake Grienericksee. Originally built in the 16th century, the moated castle first belonged to Crown Prince Friedrich, who left it to his brother Prince Heinrich after his accession to the throne. The castle was a place of work with an experimental character for renowned architects such as Johann Gottfried Kemmeter, Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, Georg Friedrich von Boumann and Carl Gotthard Langhans, as well as artists such as Antoine Pesne. Music and theater attracted numerous artists to the Musenhof Rheinsberg and filled it with cultural life. Enthusiasm for this gem continued centuries later, with Theodor Fontane and Kurt Tucholsky paying tribute to the magic of the place in their works.

Mirow Castle Island - Love Island

Liebesinsel is part of the Mirow Castle complex. It is connected to the castle island by an iron bridge. On “Liebesinsel” lies the tomb of Adolf Friedrich VI, the last Grand Duke of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz region. He died in February 1918 under unexplained circumstances. Both his life and his death remain a mystery. It is believed that he shot himself. In accordance with his 1917 will, which already included a design for the tomb, he was buried on Love Island. This monument also serves as the “stone-set” conclusion to the history of the ruling House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and the palace as a ducal residence.

Wolgast Castle Island

Former site of the ducal castle. The castle of the Dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast once stood on Wolgast Castle Island. During the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century, a cannonball struck the castle’s powder tower, leaving only ruins behind, which were subsequently demolished in the 18th century. Some of the stones from the castle ruins were also used in the reconstruction following the great city fire. Today, the names “Schlossinsel” and “Schlossstraße,” as well as the information sign there explaining the castle and its history, serve as reminders of the former ducal castle.

Ludwigsburg Palace Chapel

The Ludwigsburg castle chapel dates back to a branch church of the nearby Eldena monastery dedicated to St. Nicholas. Our church was renovated and became the castle chapel when Duchess Sophie Hedwig of Pomerania Wolgast received the former village of Darsim (Dersem) from her husband, Duke Ernst Ludwig, and built the castle here in 1592. She called the place her Ludwigshoff, which then became our Ludwigsburg.

Putbus Castle Church

The castle church in Putbus Park Until 1840, Putbus was part of the parish of Vilmnitz. In this year, the parish acquired its own parish registers and its own churchyard was consecrated. Putbus became an independent parish. Over time, the need to create a separate church building grew. Initially, the theater was to be converted into a church. However, as this plan met with resistance from the residents, the Kursalon in the park was converted into a church in 1891/92 - the upper galleries were removed and their windows moved inwards, and the open arcades to the dance hall were fitted with windows. The result was a three-aisled church. A church tower was erected in place of the northern extension, while the southern extension retained its shape. The church was consecrated on Reformation Day in 1892 and the bells rang for the first time on July 12, 1893. The castle church is impressively different from the brick churches typical of the island. It is flooded with light, with large arched windows opening onto the park. It forms an impressive ensemble with the neoclassical buildings in the park and in the adjacent streets.

Putbus Castle Park

Although Putbus Castle, once the stately home of the Princes of Putbus, was razed to the ground in 1962, the beautiful castle park is still a reminder of this magnificent time. Magnolias and sequoias adorn the English-style garden. The park was laid out in 1804 by the founder of the town, Wilhelm Malte I zu Putbus, originally in the French style. It was later developed in the style of an English landscape park. The classicist palace around which the park was laid out was unfortunately demolished in the 1960s. The orangery, the stables, the mausoleum, the parish church and the castle church as well as the monkey and bird house are still preserved. Then as now, Putbus is not only famous for its castle and circus, but also for its scenic surroundings. It is not surprising that even Caspar David Friedrich visited the Putbus region. He incorporated the impressions he gained into his paintings "A View of Putbus" and "Landscape with Rainbow", for example.

Pansevitz castle ruins and park

Built in the 16th century and owned by the family of Baron von Krassow ever since, the estate, originally built in the Renaissance style, was rebuilt and extended in the Neo-Renaissance style around 1860. In the 19th century, the estate came into the possession of the Princes of Inn- und Knyphausen. After the expropriation in 1945, the castle was occupied by several families. Due to inadequate maintenance, the estate became increasingly dilapidated and was used as a quarry after the last residents moved out. The beginnings of the park date back to the 17th century. The baroque garden was laid out around the castle and gradually expanded. In the 19th century, it was transformed into an English-style landscape garden covering around 40 hectares. Important elements of the park include the Wundersee lake with the island of love and the exotic tree species planted in the later 19th century, most of which are still present. v. Knyphausen family managed to reacquire significant parts of the park after reunification. Restored in 2006 and rescued from its slumber, it now shines in its former beauty. Schmiedeberg

The Schmiedeberg is a popular vantage point on the beach in Rerik. The Schmiedeberg rises up proudly on Rerik beach. It is the remains of an old Slavic castle rampart from the 8th century. A large part of it fell victim to a storm surge in 1872. Alongside Cape Arkona, the Schmiedeberg is the only known castle rampart directly on the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Today, the Schmiedeberg is a popular excursion destination. Visitors are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Salzhaff, the Wustrow peninsula and the Baltic Sea. There is a small, airy pavilion where you can recover from the exertions of the climb and enjoy the view.
