In the middle of the pavement of Fährstraße in Stralsund, the Schill memorial plaque commemorates Ferdinand von Schill, a Prussian officer who fought against the French occupying forces in 1809. This was the exact spot where the freedom fighter was fatally shot on May 31, 1809 - and this is where the memorial plaque was later embedded in the pavement.
Ferdinand von Schill: The freedom fighter from Stralsund
On May 25, 1809, Ferdinand von Schill rode into the Hanseatic city of Stralsund at the head of his regiment to offer resistance against the Napoleonic occupation. His courageous action made him a legendary figure in German history. On the night of May 31, 1835 - exactly 26 years after his death - his admirers had the memorial plaque secretly installed at the historic site in Fährstraße.

This public toilet is operated by staff present. If you are on the Alter Markt, you will find the toilet on the left-hand side of the town hall. To reach it, go down a flight of stairs. You will find a disabled-accessible entrance in the foyer of the town hall Monday to Friday (not on public holidays).
