Botanical Garden "Mecklenburg Switzerland"

Botanical Garden "Mecklenburg Switzerland"

📍 Moltzow

The botanical garden contains 300 perennials and 400 woody plants. In addition to the plants, sculptures by various artists, 100 roof tiles from historic buildings from all over Europe and 70 cobblestones from historic streets and squares are displayed on 2 hectares. The botanical garden in Rambow contains 300 different perennials and 400 woody plants. The birch collection with 25 different species is one of the most important in Mecklenburg. The woody plants include a cross-section of species and continents. The individual woody plant families such as beech, maple, lime, chestnut, etc. have 12 to 18 species. There are 4 to 5 species per family. The garden is in bloom from spring to fall. It starts with Japanese cherry (3 colors), forsythia (2 colors) and continues with chestnut (3 colors), fruit tree blossom, lilac (8 forms), roses (20 species), water lilies (10 colors), ornamental shrubs (15 species) and hardy hibiscus (11 colors). The roses then conclude with their second bloom. In 5 small raised bogs, the diversity of bog flora is shown with pitcher plants, sundew, orchids and typical bog trees and shrubs. The two bog-forming mosses are shown in a basin. The 100 m² show garden offers the possibility of partial self-sufficiency. It includes 2 raised beds, a herb bed, apple tree, white sweet cherry, white currant, gooseberry, yokeberry, mountain ash and a greenhouse. The greenhouse can be used as a hobby in the form of a cactus collection and the cultivation of vegetable plants. Next to the greenhouse is a small raised bog with orchids and a rock garden with hardy cacti. The show garden demonstrates that it is possible to combine a hobby and the supply of fruit and vegetables in a small area. It is intended to provide inspiration and encourage an exchange of ideas.

Hans-Hilmar Koch Museum of Letterpress Printing

Hans-Hilmar Koch Museum of Letterpress Printing

📍 Krakow am See

In the climatic health resort of Krakow am See, visitors will find the only museum of the art of letterpress printing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and what's more: since 1998, visitors have been able to experience a family business from the early 20th century up close in the show workshop, where they can touch and participate in letterpress printing. Note: Currently closed due to renovation work. Courses are still possible at the Schwerin site. The letterpress printer and typesetter Hans-Hilmar Koch has fulfilled his dream here, in the beautiful building of the old school: "Letterpress printing with movable type, as the letterpress process is also known, is the most important cultural achievement of mankind! I want to pass on this knowledge in the digital age. The sensual handling of paper, color and shapes, writing and words is being lost today." However, anyone who experiences first-hand how texts are still set in the traditional way using lead and wooden type and how they are printed on old letterpresses will gain a new appreciation of the high value of books as a cultural asset. Lovers of fine papers and high-quality commercial graphics can also place individual orders: Hans-Hilmar Koch produces printed graphics, family or business stationery through to calendars and printed napkins on the historical machines. In workshops, children and adults can learn about papermaking, lead typesetting, letterpress printing and bookbinding and produce their own printed matter such as business cards or greetings cards. Those who want to work artistically are introduced to the techniques of experimental linocut in the printmaking course. The Museum of Letterpress Printing is currently closed due to renovation work. Courses are still possible at the Schwerin location.

Castle tower Plau am See

Castle tower Plau am See

📍 Plau am See

The castle tower in Plau was built in 1448/49 and is still completely preserved. The 3 m thick walls and the 11 m deep dungeon, as well as the tower ascent, amaze locals and guests alike when they visit. The historic castle tower in Plau am See is the remaining part of a fortification that was built in 1449 to stop the raids of Brandenburg knights. During the Thirty Years' War, it offered protection against sieges and raids by the Swedes and Saxons. At the end of the war, the decision was made to "grind down" the fortifications, which meant dismantling them. Only the castle tower was spared this fate. Until 1985, the tower was not used and was open to everyone, which was particularly pleasing for the children of Plau, who had great adventures. In 2000, the Museum Friends of Plau am See also set themselves the task of renovating the tower and making it attractive for visitors.
