A wooden bridge was built to connect the two parts of the town. This was destroyed during the 30 Years' War. The man-made earth embankment connects the old town on the island and the monastery. This connection was built between 1844 and 1846 under Mayor Friedrich Meyer. A stone memorial has stood on the earth dam in his honor since 1875. The embankment, which was breached by water during the construction work, now attracts visitors with its numerous seating areas and a magnificent avenue of lime trees. STRALSUND MUSEUM St. Catherine's Monastery

📍 Stralsund

CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO CONVERSION The first museum in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund was founded in 1858 and opened a year later as the "Provinzialmuseum für Neuvorpommern und Rügen". It is also the oldest museum in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Exhibitions on prehistory and early history, urban history, folklore and naval history are presented in three listed buildings. The most beautiful and at the same time most valuable exhibit is the gold jewelry from Hiddensee found in 1872-74. Founded in 1858, the museum is housed in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen in the heart of the listed old town. Two gold treasures from the Viking Age can be admired here, of which the gold jewelry from Hiddensee is not only legendary, but also world-famous. Artistic Stralsund faience invites you to look and marvel, as do rare medieval ecclesiastical vestments. Many other highlights tell of the eventful history of the once so influential city on the Sound, of which it was said in the Middle Ages "...that it was a pearl in the crown of the Hanseatic League...". The largest and most beautiful room in the monastery is the summer hall. This magnificent hall impresses with its wonderful architectural design, which also includes a medieval vault painting. A wide variety of exhibits await visitors on the 1st floor. In addition to craft scrolls, seals and craftsmen's silver, there is above all magnificent furniture from different eras on display. Tableware made of glass and porcelain as well as household items made of copper and brass give an idea of the past splendor of bourgeois parlors. A special highlight are the astronomical and nautical instruments from the collection of Axel Graf von Löwen, who, as Governor General of Swedish Pomerania, bequeathed his unique collection, which also includes art objects of all kinds, to Stralsund in his will in 1761. Saale forest biotopes

Saale forest biotopes

Different types of biotope harmonize in a small area in a forest clearing. Created by the old forester Martin Lawrenz, but it is not a botanical forest garden. "Strictly speaking, the Saal biotope is a collection of biotopes," says the old forester Martin Lawrenz, reporting on the efforts required to create a plant world surrounded by his raised bogs and fens, dry heath, water areas with water lilies, dry stone walls, rock piles and deadwood areas, which is also followed by the desired animal world. The water bodies must be deep enough to prevent silting up. Too many water lilies and yellow-flowered frogbit decompose in the fall and form putrefactive gases that disturb the biological balance. Therefore, laborious weeding is necessary. This regulating intervention is carried out regularly. Discover this gem in a clearing at the southern tip of the municipality of Saal: Martin Lawrenz, retired forester and owner of this piece of woodland, has brought the former sandpit back to life with an artificial bog, water features, terraces, fieldstone piles and walls, a seating area under fir trees at the highest point of the site ... ... In May it turns green and the chimney wasps begin their work, from June the water lilies bloom in the fall there are mushrooms, many and large, blackberries also in the adjacent mixed beech forest... in the forest 14 degrees plus in the autumn sun feels wonderful Tree beads at small injury sites on the beech trees are little lucky charms ... Lawrenz keeps the grazing forest animals away from the still young vegetation with a protective fence. However, it is obviously not possible without natural browsing, so Lawrenz has to tackle the autumn pruning himself with garden tools and technology. It is an impressive piece of cultivated nature. Water lilies, grasshoppers, dragonflies and the like show themselves to the delight and contemplation of local visitors. Chimney wasps in May: solitary wasps are important for the natural cycle Despite their bad reputation, wasps are important for the natural cycle. They not only serve as pollinators, but also eat plant pests. One particularly interesting species is the common chimney wasp, which builds "chimneys" in its nesting holes. In order to observe and help chimney wasps, a triad of food (weevil larvae), nesting site (clay or dry place) and suitable habitat with alfalfa must be available. One such location is the Saal biotope. Here, the animals form large clusters of nests and can be easily observed. As the name suggests, the chimney wasp builds a chimney on its house, and this is how it works: The wasp digs a nesting tube up to five centimeters deep, soaks the building material removed in the process with saliva and deposits it in front of the nesting tube in the form of a "chimney". After breeding, the wasps can store the material back into the tube as filling material. By the way: sand, clay, gravel, field stones and the terrain in our region are a legacy of the last ice age. The resulting brick and fieldstone buildings are contemporary witnesses of our subsequent civilization. The Saal forest biotope collection is not far from the Saal Apostle Stones. Guides from the Southern Bodden Coast Tourist Office offer regular guided tours from May to September. You will then see: field bumblebee, water mint, immortelle, dragon's bane, western honeybee, broad-leaved bulrush, water lilies, blackberries, rock bumblebee, round-leaved sundew, broom heather, juniper, redwoods, bell heather, common scratch thistle, water frog, emperor cloak, peacock butterfly, ... On your own: don't forget your picnic basket!

Salt spray in Damgarten harbor - Old Salt Road

Salt spray in Damgarten harbor - Old Salt Road

Old Salt Road smuggling route As a navigable river, the Recknitz was of economic importance for many centuries: goods were transported up and down the river, especially salt from Bad Sülze. The sought-after raw material was loaded in sacks onto barge and shipped via Damgarten, Dändorf and Dierhagen to the Grand Ducal salt warehouse in Wismar. Salt was a coveted commodity and trade in it was highly regulated. This attracted many a smuggler, especially as the Recknitz was a border river. In the 17th century, an incident near Pantlitz led to entanglements between the ducal Mecklenburg government in Schwerin and the Pomeranian side. A manor owner living in Daskow suddenly demanded tolls for free passage. An armed conflict ensued and a salt barge was sunk. The wreck continued to obstruct shipping traffic on the Recknitz until the end of the 18th century. The replica of the salt barge is a reminder of the former salt route and the smuggling of the white gold. Did you know that ... ... you can smuggle again today - and without any danger? The eight vendors on the map below will tell you what they still have in common with salt. You will receive smuggled goods for your stop or purchase, which you can exchange for new goods at the next station. At the end, you will have a bag full of high-quality souvenirs! More info
