Historic hydroelectric power station

Güstrow · Mecklenburgische Seenplatte · 53.7951° N, 12.1801° E
Historic hydroelectric power station

-temporarily closed- The historic hydropower plant of Stadtwerke Güstrow still generates green electricity from hydropower, which is fed into the Güstrow power grid.

If you are interested, Stadtwerke Güstrow offers a guided tour by prior arrangement. As the population of Güstrow grew in the 19th century, the demand for high-quality drinking water increased. The watercourse of the Nebel at the Mühlentor mill was an ideal location for a waterworks. The need for a reliable power supply also developed in Güstrow. There were often bottlenecks in the supply from the Rostock-Bramow coal-fired power station. The power of the water at the Mühlentor mill was therefore to be used to supply the town. From 1923, the Francis turbine was only used to generate electricity. The turbine was coupled with a direct current generator, which initially only supplied electricity for the pumps of the "Am Berge" waterworks. In 1926/27, the new "Am Berge" hydroelectric power station was built in the area of the Mühlentor mill. The Kaplan turbine was also installed. The Kaplan turbine in the right-hand canal drove a generator to produce electricity, while the Francis turbine in the left-hand canal drove the pumps for the elevated tank in Baustraße. From 1999 to 2000, the "Am Berge" hydroelectric power station was restored by the Güstrow public utility company. The first test run of the turbines was then started as part of EXPO 2000, at which Güstrow was an external location. The electricity generated here is fed into the Güstrow power grid . Historic Güstrow hydroelectric power station - engineering history on the River Nebel

The historic Güstrow hydroelectric power plant is one of the most remarkable industrial monuments in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Situated on the Nebel, a river that flows through the small town in the heart of the federal state, the plant still generates green electricity from hydropower and feeds it into the local power grid. A trip here can easily be combined with a visit to the historic old town of Güstrow or a round trip along the Baltic Sea coast - via Rostock or Wismar, for example.

From the Mühlentor mill to the "Am Berge" hydroelectric power plant

The history of the plant dates back to the 19th century, when Güstrow's growing population made a reliable supply of drinking water necessary. The Nebel watercourse at the Mühlentor mill was a suitable location early on. From 1923, a Francis turbine was used exclusively to generate electricity. In 1926/27, the actual hydroelectric power station "Am Berge" was built, in which a Kaplan turbine was also installed. While the Kaplan turbine drove a generator, the Francis turbine supplied the pumps for the elevated tank in Baustraße.

Restoration for EXPO 2000 and operation to this day

Between 1999 and 2000, Stadtwerke Güstrow completely restored the hydropower plant. The first test run of the turbines took place as part of EXPO 2000, at which Güstrow was represented as an external location. Since then, the green electricity generated has been continuously fed into the Güstrow power grid. Anyone interested can visit the plant as part of a guided tour - prior registration with Stadtwerke Güstrow is required. Note: The hydroelectric power plant is currently temporarily closed.

The historic residential town of Güstrow boasts one of the most important castles of the late Renaissance. The original medieval princely castle was destroyed by fire in 1557, but just one year later Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg initiated a comprehensive reconstruction and rebuilding of his residence. Additional extensions and alterations planned by architects of different origins resulted in a synthesis of Italian, French, Dutch and German architectural ideas - unique for the region and the time! The castle complex was last extended under Duke Gustav Adolph, who had the gatehouse and castle bridge built in 1670. After the Güstrow ducal line died out at the end of the 17th century and the town became the secondary residence of the dukes of Schwerin, the castle fell on hard times and slowly fell into disrepair. Changing uses followed until a large-scale restoration in 1963 restored the interior to its former glory, allowing it to be used as a museum from 1972. The 16th-century pleasure garden, which was painstakingly restored between 2011 and 2014, is well worth a visit. Since then, fragrant flowers and the enchanted pergola have invited visitors to take relaxing strolls against the impressive backdrop of the palace. Restoration work The castle is currently being extensively renovated and repaired. The collections and the interior of the castle are not open to the public during the construction work. The garden The reconstructed garden is open to the public and invites visitors to stroll and linger with its lavender beds, hornbeam arbors and moat.
