Museum of Local History Hiddensee

Museum of Local History Hiddensee

📍 Kloster

The local history museum is one of the cultural attractions on the island of Hiddensee. Redesigned a few years ago, the permanent exhibition provides a comprehensive and vivid account of life on the island. An insight into life on the island The Hiddensee local history museum is located directly on the west beach of Kloster. It was built around 1890 as a sea rescue station, but for almost 70 years now the old rescue equipment has only been part of the museum. In the permanent exhibition, which was redesigned a few years ago, visitors of all ages can find out how hard the islanders' lives used to be, how seafaring and fishing shaped everyday life, but also how quickly tourism reduced their worries and brought many prominent guests to the island. The most valuable exhibit in the exhibition is a replica of the Hiddensee gold treasure. The original of Germany's largest Viking gold find is in the possession of the Stralsund Museum. A small highlight of the museum visit for many guests is the "Amber Room". The extensive collection of the amber fisherman Ingolf Engels contains wonderful pieces and shows very nicely how diverse the "gold of the Baltic Sea" can be. Vilm Island

Vilm Island

📍 Vilm

Vilm, the small sister island of Rügen, which is only a few hectares in size, is known for its gnarled oaks and sunrises, which captivated Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. They walked the island together and wrote letters to Goethe about its beauty. Around 6,000 years ago, the 94-hectare island of Vilm was formed from moraines left behind by glaciers. It is still an untouched natural paradise today. Forests of ancient oaks and giant beeches characterize the landscape. The beginning of settlement on Vilm can be traced back to the Stone Age. Once a holy place of the Slavs, later a Christian pilgrimage site and medieval hermitage, a princely summer residence in the 19th century and soon after a meeting place for landscape painters - Vilm has always exerted a great attraction. This is probably most evident in painting. Over the last 200 years, the island has been visited by over 350 painters. The entire island has been a nature reserve since 1936. Guided tours of Vilm Island take place from the end of March to the end of October. Daily at 10 a.m. and a second guided tour from 1.30 p.m. if required. The starting point is the port of Lauterbach. The motorboat "Julchen" will take you to the island of Vilm. The excursion leads partly through rough terrain and covers a distance of 3 kilometers. The outward and return journeys take 15 minutes each. The guided tour lasts 2.5 hours. The participation fee must be paid in cash and on the day of the tour on the motorboat "Julchen". Payment by EC card is not possible. Important: Unauthorized access to the island and taking animals with you is prohibited. Due to the limited number of participants, pre-registration is essential.

Maidens' Fountain

Maidens' Fountain

📍 Stralsund

The "Mägdebrunnen" was recreated in 2003 by the German sculptor Günter Kaden on the site of a historic fountain. Its design details have repeatedly inspired various interpretations. Here, where Schillstraße flows into Fährstraße in the direction of the harbor, a fountain "am Schilde" stood for centuries to supply the surrounding population with water. It was the task of the maidservants to fetch the water from the well and carry it to the patrician houses. The sculptor Günter Kaden took up this theme as part of an urban planning competition, won the competition and designed the fountain from a block of granite with a group of bronze figures in 2003. The bronze figures show three maids fetching water and whispering to each other.

STRALSUND MUSEUM St. Catherine's Monastery

STRALSUND MUSEUM St. Catherine's Monastery

📍 Stralsund

CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO CONVERSION The first museum in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund was founded in 1858 and opened a year later as the "Provinzialmuseum für Neuvorpommern und Rügen". It is also the oldest museum in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Exhibitions on prehistory and early history, urban history, folklore and naval history are presented in three listed buildings. The most beautiful and at the same time most valuable exhibit is the gold jewelry from Hiddensee found in 1872-74. Founded in 1858, the museum is housed in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen in the heart of the listed old town. Two gold treasures from the Viking Age can be admired here, of which the gold jewelry from Hiddensee is not only legendary, but also world-famous. Artistic Stralsund faience invites you to look and marvel, as do rare medieval ecclesiastical vestments. Many other highlights tell of the eventful history of the once so influential city on the Sound, of which it was said in the Middle Ages "...that it was a pearl in the crown of the Hanseatic League...". The largest and most beautiful room in the monastery is the summer hall. This magnificent hall impresses with its wonderful architectural design, which also includes a medieval vault painting. A wide variety of exhibits await visitors on the 1st floor. In addition to craft scrolls, seals and craftsmen's silver, there is above all magnificent furniture from different eras on display. Tableware made of glass and porcelain as well as household items made of copper and brass give an idea of the past splendor of bourgeois parlors. A special highlight are the astronomical and nautical instruments from the collection of Axel Graf von Löwen, who, as Governor General of Swedish Pomerania, bequeathed his unique collection, which also includes art objects of all kinds, to Stralsund in his will in 1761.
