Redesigned in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Gothic gable—which had been altered in the Baroque style—underwent a partial renovation in 1968–69.In the lower part of the facade, the Gothic structure of the facade can be seen through two exposed windows, complemented by a sandstone slab from 1608 that originally came from the house’s cornice. During extensive renovations in 1994 and 1995, remnants of the medieval paintwork and sculptural decoration were discovered.

The gabled house at Külpstraße 5 in Stralsund is considered the city’s oldest stone building. Its cellar, dating back to 1258, makes the building one of the most significant medieval architectural monuments in the Baltic Sea region. Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage city on the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is home to an extraordinary piece of its history in this house.
Gothic Architecture and Baroque Renovations at the Stralsund Giebelhaus
The house was remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries, before a partial restoration of the Baroque-altered Gothic gable took place in 1968 and 1969. In the lower part of the facade, the original Gothic structure can be seen through two exposed windows. The facade is complemented by a sandstone slab dating from 1608, which once came from the house’s Kemladen.
Medieval paint layers and sculptural decoration—findings from the renovations
During extensive renovation work in 1994 and 1995, remnants of the medieval paint layers as well as parts of the sculptural decoration were uncovered. These findings provide a rare insight into the building’s original design and underscore its historical significance in the context of Brick Gothic architecture, which characterizes the old towns of Stralsund, Greifswald, and Wismar alike.

You will find a disabled-accessible entrance in the foyer of the town hall Monday to Friday (not on public holidays).
