Giebelhaus, 14 Ossenreyerstraße

Stralsund · Rügen · 54.3144° N, 13.0898° E
Giebelhaus, 14 Ossenreyerstraße

With its cellar dating back to 1258, this medieval gabled house is considered Stralsund’s oldest stone building.

Redesigned in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Gothic gable—which had been altered in the Baroque style—underwent a partial renovation in 1968–69.In the lower part of the facade, the Gothic structure of the facade can be seen through two exposed windows, complemented by a sandstone slab from 1608 that originally came from the house’s cornice. During extensive renovations in 1994 and 1995, remnants of the medieval paintwork and sculptural decoration were discovered.

Gable House at Ossenreyerstraße 14 – Stralsund’s Oldest Stone Building

The gabled house at Ossenreyerstraße 14 in Stralsund is one of the most significant examples of medieval architecture in the Baltic Sea region. Its basement has been dated to 1258, making the building the oldest known stone structure in the city. Stralsund, a former Hanseatic city on the East Pomeranian coast of the Baltic Sea, preserves a unique piece of its city history with this house.

Gothic facade with Baroque modifications

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the building was remodeled, giving the originally Gothic gable Baroque features. A partial renovation in 1968 and 1969 revealed parts of this Gothic structure once again. The original Gothic structure is still visible today in two windows in the lower part of the facade. The facade is complemented by a sandstone slab dating from 1608, which formerly belonged to the house’s shopfront.

Medieval Paintwork and Sculptural Decoration Discovered

During extensive restoration work in 1994 and 1995, experts made remarkable discoveries: remnants of the original medieval paintwork and fragments of sculptural decoration came to light. These discoveries attest to the building’s artistic decoration at the time of its construction and provide insights into the architectural culture of medieval Western Pomerania, which extends along the entire Baltic Sea coast from Wismar through Rostock to Greifswald.
