Caspar David Friedrich was so fascinated by the tomb that he captured it in drawings and sketches. During the excavation conducted by Prof. Ewald Schuldt in 1970, various artifacts were discovered, particularly in front of and inside the entrance to the burial chamber. These include, among other things, pottery shards, arrowheads, amber beads, axes, and other flint tools. Another distinctive feature of the tomb is the small bowls attached to the toppled guardian stone and one of the boundary stones, which still raise many questions today. Caspar David Friedrich and the Fascination of the Megalithic Tomb
Even the painter Caspar David Friedrich was so fascinated by the tomb that he captured it in drawings and sketches. During an excavation led by Prof. Ewald Schuldt in 1970, numerous artifacts were unearthed—including pottery shards, arrowheads, amber beads, axes, and other flint tools, which were recovered in front of and inside the entrance to the burial chamber.
Mysterious small depressions on the stones of the Dwasieden tomb
A particularly curious feature are the so-called “small depressions”—tiny indentations found on an overturned guardian stone as well as on one of the boundary stones. Their significance remains unclear to this day and continues to puzzle researchers and visitors alike. The Dwasieden megalithic tomb thus fits seamlessly into the rich archaeological landscape of the island of Rügen.
