Pirate Gorge Viewpoint

One of the many hideouts of the pirate Klaus Störtebeker. The Pirate Gorge is an old cliff face. According to legend, Klaus Störtebeker, a feared pirate of the 14th century, sought refuge here and buried treasures. In the Pirate Gorge, a staircase leads from the cliff-top path down to the beach.

The northeasternmost railroad station in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the island of Rügen with a view of the lake. The railroad line from Bergen to Sassnitz was completed and put into operation in 1891. At that time, the station building was located in the village of Crampas and bore the inscription Crampas - Sassnitz. The terminus station Sassnitz (until 1993: Saßnitz) is located north of the town center and is designed as a terminus station. Regional trains arrive and depart here every hour, with connections in all directions. When you leave the station building, you are immediately captivated by the view of the sea.

The "Schlossberg": Fortifications near Sassnitz

The so-called Schlossberg, near the former Werder forest house, is a rectangular earthwork near Sassnitz. Located on a forested moraine hill on the Steinbach near the former Werder forest lodge is the so-called “Schlossberg,” a roughly rectangular earthwork still approximately 2–8 meters high, which has been disturbed in the southwest by gravel extraction and a chalk quarry. On the north and east sides of the rampart, which measures approximately 100 x 180 m, outer ditches about 1.5 m deep are still preserved, while inner ditches of similar depth remain on the south side. To the north of the earthwork, three gate-like entrances are still visible today. On the eastern side of the earthwork, there is also a passageway. Pottery shards and flint artifacts were recovered from the “Schlossberg.” Despite the finds—most of which are uncharacteristic—dating the rampart remains difficult. The 70-kilometer “Rügen Coastal Trail” promises beautiful scenic experiences. The trail also takes you to the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Viewpoint. From here—a plateau-like chalk outcrop—you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of the chalk formations that drop steeply down to the sea. In 1981, approximately 150,000 cubic meters of chalk rock collapsed here. The sea has not yet completely eroded the rock, so you can still see a distinct white color in the water. The lookout point was named after the historian, writer, and journalist Ernst Moritz Arndt.

The Dwasieden megalithic tomb near the Hochuferweg trail in Sassnitz is particularly impressive, with a length of 35 meters, two very large guardian stones, and a well-preserved trapezoidal burial chamber surrounded by encircling stones. During the excavation conducted by Prof. Ewald Schuldt in 1970, various artifacts were discovered, particularly in front of and inside the entrance to the burial chamber. These include, among other things, pottery shards, arrowheads, amber beads, axes, and other flint tools. Another distinctive feature of the tomb is the small bowls attached to the toppled guardian stone and one of the boundary stones, which still raise many questions today. Legend Stone at Lake Hertha

The so-called “Sagenstein” is located not far from Lake Hertha. Near Lake Hertha stands the so-called “Sagenstein,” on which, according to legend, the footprints of an adult, a child, and a hare or dog are imprinted. The legend itself tells of the trial of a maiden who was to be sacrificed to the pagan gods. However, the “Sagenstein” was actually erected by an enterprising innkeeper at Königsstuhl, who presumably created this additional “attraction” in the 19th century.
