The 1981 chalk collapse—a geological event on the Baltic Sea

A striking testament to the geological dynamics of this coastal section is the major chalk collapse of 1981, during which approximately 150,000 cubic meters of chalk rock tumbled into the sea. To this day, the water has not completely eroded the fallen material—when the sea is calm, a distinct white coloration can still be seen in the water below the viewpoint. The viewpoint was named after the historian, writer, and journalist Ernst Moritz Arndt, who had close ties to the island of Rügen.
