University of Greifswald

The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Europe. The baroque main building with the old faculties in the middle of the old town is a particularly popular destination for tourists. Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is the second oldest in Northern Europe. It was founded on the initiative of the then mayor - and soon afterwards first rector - Heinrich Rubenow. Due to its long tradition, the University of Greifswald has numerous collections with several million objects like no other in Germany. More than 12,000 students enliven the city of around 60,000 inhabitants and ensure a varied and lively atmosphere. The university's baroque main building on Rubenowplatz and the various institutes with their historic lecture halls are located in the heart of the old town. The new campus on Berthold-Beitz-Platz with its natural science and medical institutes, the large central library and the new canteen also offers excellent study conditions. Hanshagen Watermill Association, Inc.

The Hanshagen Watermill, a listed historic building, is now a fully operational technical museum. Discover its eventful 500-year history. Experience it as a working grain mill—from the mill pond to the grinding mechanism—and as a paper mill through its architecture, as well as through text, images, and models. Water wheels, powered solely by flowing water, formed the basis of the world’s first complex machines: mills. Their basic design, in use since 200 B.C., ushered in the cultural and historical transition from artisanal to industrial production. The Hanshagen Watermill was built in 1524 as a monastic grain mill. Following the Reformation, it passed into ducal ownership in 1535. After the Thirty Years’ War and by Swedish decree, it became the property of the University of Greifswald in 1654. In 1750, the university converted it into a paper mill using rags. Rising demand for paper necessitated a new building adjacent to the old mill in 1800. However, the invention of wood-pulped cellulose made traditional paper production unprofitable, which is why the facility was converted back into a grain mill in 1855. Sold by the university in 1920, it remained in operation until it suffered extensive damage in 1952. Afterward, despite its status as a protected historic building, it fell into disrepair to the point where it had to be closed by the building authorities. Following the mill’s acquisition in 2010 and a complex, meticulous restoration by Schilling Invest GmbH & Co.KG, it was opened as a technical museum on German Mill Day 2012. To provide volunteer support for the maintenance of the property and to assist those interested in the mill, the "Verein Wassermühle Hanshagen e.V." was founded in 2021.  Open regularly for video-guided tours and personal guided tours, visitors can observe the fascinating mill technology in operation and gain an understanding of the highly developed craft of milling and its significance for human development.

Victoria - Monument on the Waren mill hill

Victoria - Monument on the Waren mill hill A memorial on the Waren Mühlenberg commemorates the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The monument, erected from donations, is dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Waren military training district. The tall, slender plinth is made of fieldstone and bears several inscription plaques. Next to the names is the dedication of the memorial "To the warriors from the Waren military district who remained in the war against France in 1870-71". The "Victory Column" is crowned by "Rauch's Victoria from March's workshop in Charlottenburg". The artificial stone sculpture was produced in series at the time and was also used for other monuments. Visible aisles in the park-like planting of the Mühlenberg made the monument visible from several streets. Its inauguration took place on 15.7.1877. The keynote speech was given by the principal of the grammar school, Carl Holle. He described the monument as "a testimony to our gratitude, a warning call to our grandchildren".

Villa Auguste - Malchow, the Island Town

Today, “Villa Auguste” is a day care center for seniors, but the building was originally a private residence. Leather manufacturer Julius Steinlein (1855–1925) had the villa built between 1902 and 1904 in the neoclassical style and named it after his wife, Auguste Steinlein. In addition to its prominent corner location, the property also features two impressive stained-glass windows with floral designs in the foyer. Steinlein drew inspiration from villas in major German cities. When Auguste Steinlein died in 1947 and her last surviving relatives renounced their inheritance, the villa became the property of the town of Malchow in 1958. It was then initially used for public purposes, first as the “Workers’ Clubhouse” and, starting in 1990, as the “Haus der Jugend” youth center. Finally, in 2014–2015, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, restoring its historic appearance. After the work was completed, the building was taken over by Malchower Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH and reopened as the “Villa Auguste” day care center. To achieve this, a stairwell had to be added and several rooms had to be adapted. The outdoor area surrounding the fountain statue “Nereid with Putto,” which had been destroyed by vandalism, was also restored.

Vitter Strand

One of the most romantic places on the island of Rügen is the little village of Vitt. It lies tucked away in a coastal gorge along the cliffs. From Vitter Strand, there is a magnificent view all the way to Cape Arkona. Vitt has been known for centuries for the “shore sermons” delivered by Pastor Gottfried Ludwig Kosegarten, which he gave to the fishermen on the cliffs of Vitt. In his honor, construction of the Vitt Chapel began in 1806—reportedly based on plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel—and it can still be visited today and is used for weddings. The wonderfully picturesque landscape in the north of the island of Rügen can be explored to the fullest on long walks along Vitter Beach with a view of Cape Arkona.

The historic Voelschow Berg forest restaurant is located directly on the River Peene, nestled in the natural surroundings of Demmin's old town forest. The place combines an original ambience with a variety of uses and invites you to cultural discoveries as well as private events. Whether a festive wedding, stylish company celebration or inspiring cultural program - the ensemble offers flexible room solutions for events of all kinds with a 160 m² dance hall, a smaller hall of 50 m² and a 100 m² catering area. The spacious outdoor area is also available and expands the possibilities for celebrations and meetings in the countryside. Cultural events take place here regularly, enriching the region's offerings and making this special place accessible to a wide audience.

Tankow / Ummanz birdwatching platform

A popular viewing platform for watching the "birds of happiness", the cranes. The village of Tankow is located in the north-east of the island of Ummanz, in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. Tankow is particularly well-known among birdwatchers. In spring and fall, the pleasant cry of geese, cranes and other migratory birds breaks the silence of the area, which is also known as a European crane resting place. The best place to observe the migratory birds is from the recommended vantage points. The same applies to observing the cranes as they forage. One of these viewing platforms is located in Tankow. The Ummanz Information Center in Waase offers regular guided tours.

Pramort birdwatching point

From September to November, you can experience an impressive spectacle from the Pramort crane resting area, when the cranes form a wedge-shaped formation or line up in a long chain as they approach their roosts. A green roof has been erected over the rectangular viewing platform. Protection from wind and rain for all observers with binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras. At the same time, the migrating birds are not disturbed by the people watching them below. A win-win situation for humans and animals! Spotting scopes, binoculars and lenses for observing animals can be borrowed from the Max Hünten Haus. The platform was built naturally - ecologically and sustainably. The Pramort crane observation platform is barrier- and disturbance-free.

Pramort Hohe Düne bird observation point

The most important migratory resting place of the gray crane is located in front of Pramort. The presence of humans disturbs the large birds. They become nervous, turn away and waste valuable energy, which they urgently need for the long flight to their wintering grounds. In the worst case scenario, they may leave their roost - permanently. From here you can observe various water birds, waders and white-tailed eagles. A special feature is the observation of the resting cranes. From September to November, you can experience an impressive spectacle from the Pramort crane roosting site, for example when the cranes form a wedge-shaped formation or line up in a long chain as they approach their roosting sites. Pramort is a large field of white dunes on the Ostzingst. At more than 13 meters high, the high dune of Pramort is also one of the highest white dune landscapes on the German Baltic Sea coast. This dune, the High Dune of Pramort, is an extremely sensitive landscape that would be damaged by any footfall. People don't really belong here. In order to protect the highly sensitive large birds, the number of visitors to Pramort is limited. The entire area is therefore closed to the general public every day from September 1 to the beginning of November from 3 pm until 8 am the next morning. With one exception: you can purchase the National Park Card "Observe - without disturbing" for the day in question at the checkpoint. It is then valid from 3 pm to 7 pm.

Folklore museum in Schönberg

The "Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhaus", the oldest hall house in the country, is just a few minutes away from the main building of the Folklore Museum. The "Volkskundemuseum" in Schönberg has unique ethnographic collections of furniture and textiles. The museum has been housed in a former schoolhouse next to the church since 1932. The museum offers special exhibitions and events on a variety of topics, as well as guided tours of the museum and guided tours of the town by appointment. Opening hours: Open all year round. The "Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhaus" is a special outdoor facility. The buildings of the open-air complex "Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhaus", with the only surviving pre-Reformation Kübbungsdielen barn in Mecklenburg, were built near Schönberg in Bechelsdorf around 1528. The monumental farm belongs to the type of Low German hall houses and shows the culture, living and working conditions of a farming family in the second half of the 19th century. The Volkstheater Rostock is the city’s four-genre theater: musical theater, drama, dance theater, and the concert series presented by the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock together form the backbone of cultural life in this regional hub. With classic productions in the Main Auditorium, quality entertainment at the Kleine Komödie Warnemünde, and a contemporary program at the Ateliertheater, the Volkstheater offers a diverse range of artistic experiences to a broad audience: Food for the soul, mind, and senses—and from May through September, also at the Volkstheater Summer in Hall 207 on the grounds of the old Neptunwerft shipyard. During the warmer months, the Volkstheater sets up a stage in the former shipbuilding hall and presents special summer highlights against the backdrop of historic industrial architecture. With operettas, musicals, and—not to be forgotten—children’s theater, the historic Hall 207 comes to life anew for locals and tourists alike. Collaborations with institutions and companies from the city and surrounding area also take the ensemble to other—sometimes surprising—venues, ranging from small restaurants to the large Ostseestadion. The theater also maintains close collaboration with other arts and cultural institutions, such as the Association of Independent Theaters of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or tanzland e.V. Through workshops and participatory projects, the Volkstheater is deeply committed to cultural and social education. The municipal theater has existed since 1895—the year the imposing building of the Stadttheater was inaugurated, which went up in flames in 1942. Since then, the theater’s ensembles have performed in a former entertainment and club building that was converted into a theater. In 1975, renovations gave it its current form. Today, approximately 250 artists and staff members stage around 700 events here each year.

In 1949, the curtain rose at the Anklam Theater on *Iphigenia in Tauris*, which opened the very first season of the small theater in the Schützenhaus. Hardly anyone at the time would have expected that this small community theater would one day become one of the most versatile cultural institutions in our state. In 1993, the Theater Anklam became the Vorpommersche Landesbühne, which today delights residents and tourists alike on the sunny island of Usedom and the neighboring mainland with theater of all kinds at three different venues and on open-air stages. Permanent venues: Theater Anklam, Blechbüchse Zinnowitz, Barther Boddenbühne. Summer performances: “Chapeau Rouge” theater tent in Heringsdorf, right on the beach promenade; the Vineta Festival on the Ostseebühne Zinnowitz; theater on the Usedom Harbor Stage; Barther Theater Garden; “Die Peene brennt” on the banks of the Peene River in Anklam in early September, as well as the Vorpommern Theater Academy—a training center for actors in Zinnowitz. The company’s headquarters is the Theater Anklam. Since 1997, audiences have been following the stories of the sunken city of Vineta annually at the Ostseebühne. The cast includes actors from the Vorpommersche Landesbühne Anklam, students from the Vorpommern Theater Academy, and amateur performers from the region.
