Villa Auguste - Malchow, the Island Town

Malchow · Mecklenburgische Seenplatte · 53.4790° N, 12.4259° E
Villa Auguste - Malchow, the Island Town

Today, “Villa Auguste” is a day care center for seniors, but the building was originally a private residence.

Leather manufacturer Julius Steinlein (1855–1925) had the villa built between 1902 and 1904 in the neoclassical style and named it after his wife, Auguste Steinlein. In addition to its prominent corner location, the property also features two impressive stained-glass windows with floral designs in the foyer. Steinlein drew inspiration from villas in major German cities. When Auguste Steinlein died in 1947 and her last surviving relatives renounced their inheritance, the villa became the property of the town of Malchow in 1958. It was then initially used for public purposes, first as the “Workers’ Clubhouse” and, starting in 1990, as the “Haus der Jugend” youth center. Finally, in 2014–2015, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, restoring its historic appearance. After the work was completed, the building was taken over by Malchower Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH and reopened as the “Villa Auguste” day care center. To achieve this, a stairwell had to be added and several rooms had to be adapted. The outdoor area surrounding the fountain statue “Nereid with Putto,” which had been destroyed by vandalism, was also restored.

Villa Auguste in the Island Town of Malchow – The History of a Townhouse

Villa Auguste in the island town of Malchow is one of the most striking buildings in the town, located in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Leather manufacturer Julius Steinlein had this stately estate built between 1902 and 1904 in the neoclassical style and named it after his wife, Auguste Steinlein. He modeled it after villas in major German cities. Particularly striking are the building’s prominent corner location and two imposing stained-glass windows with floral designs in the foyer.

From a Private Villa to a Landmark in Malchow’s History

After Auguste Steinlein’s death in 1947 and the heirs’ decision to relinquish the estate, the villa became the property of the town of Malchow in 1958. In the decades that followed, it was used for public purposes—first as the “Workers’ Clubhouse” and, starting in 1990, as the “House of Youth” youth center. This eventful history reflects the social changes in the region, similar to those observed in other cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, such as Wismar or Stralsund.

Renovation in 2014–2015 – Villa Auguste’s Historic Appearance Restored

In 2014 and 2015, Villa Auguste underwent extensive renovation, allowing the building’s historic appearance to be largely restored. As part of the renovation work, a stairwell was added and individual rooms were adapted. Since then, Malchower Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH has been operating the building as a day care center for senior citizens. The outdoor area, including the fountain figure “Nereid with Putto,” which had been destroyed by vandalism, was also faithfully restored to its original state as part of the work.
