Teufelsstein - Megalithic Tomb near Seelvitz

Teufelsstein - Megalithic Tomb near Seelvitz

Zirkow

The "Teufelsstein" megalithic tomb is located not far from the "Hüningsbusch" megalithic tomb near Seelvitz. Near the “Hüningsbusch” megalithic tomb lies the “Teufelsstein” megalithic tomb. The tomb, which has a severely disturbed burial chamber, belongs to the group of large dolmens with a vestibule typical of Rügen. On the clay soil—which in turn lay on a bed of pigeon-egg-sized flint pebbles—sections composed of individual stone slabs set vertically were identified. Only a few Neolithic finds, such as two hand millstones, some pottery, and an amber bead, were recovered from the burial chamber. A sandstone grinding slab was used as a threshold stone. Another distinctive feature is the three small bowls attached to the surface of the keystone.

Tine's weaving and candle barn

Tine's weaving and candle barn

Groß Laasch

If you want to experience how decorative candles are made, the weaving and candle barn in Groß Laasch is just the place for you. Here, Christine Gabler makes pretty light and warmth dispensers by hand, which create a cozy atmosphere not only in the cold season. In the converted barn of a typical Mecklenburg farmhouse, she produces candles in a wide variety of colors and shapes. Christine Gabler mainly uses high-quality palm oil-based stearin as a material, which ensures that the candles burn two to three times longer than conventional kerosene candles and also produce significantly less soot. Around 40 different shapes and 18 colors can be combined with each other, so that in the end each candle is unique. Of particular interest to visitors is the Candle Barn's offer to get hands-on. In the experience workshop, young and old candle makers are introduced to the art of candle casting and can create a pretty gift or personal souvenir after just 15 minutes of expert instruction. Vests, jackets, coats, scarves, belts and curtains are also made in the weaving and candle barn using traditional handicraft techniques. In the show workshop, visitors learn about the old craft and find out lots of interesting facts about the material properties of hand-spun wool, which is even said to have a healing effect. The weaving and candle barn is only open by appointment.

Rüterberg clay pit

Rüterberg clay pit

Rüterberg

On the edge of the so-called "Village Republic of Rüterberg" lies a natural gem of a special kind. Clay was mined here by hand for more than 80 years. From the early 19th century onwards, initially sporadically, then industrially from 1889. The area was shut down in 1968 when the border was secured. What remained was an industrial wasteland. Desolate crater landscapes, deep pits and high slag heaps without trees or shrubs were the result of decades of clay mining. As more and more people left the then restricted area, nature reclaimed the land. Robinia, aspen and sand birch soon colonized the barren soil and over the decades, a dense mixed deciduous forest developed in and around the clay pit, which became the basis of life for a diverse flora and fauna. The clay pit gradually filled with water, creating a small lake. Today, an interesting circular trail leads around this lake, reflecting not only the traces of human activity, but also the result of almost 50 years of natural development. Over the past few years, the "Naturschutz Elbetal e.V." (Elbe Valley Nature Conservation Association) has transformed it into an educational nature trail with information boards and stands explaining the history of this unique landscape and its geological features. Visitors can also learn interesting facts about the mining history of the village and the animals and plants that live here. The well-signposted circular trail is around 1.2 kilometers long. If you want to visit all eight stations and find out more, you should allow an hour and a half.

Peat-Hauling Wagons at the Sülze Salt Works

Peat-Hauling Wagons at the Sülze Salt Works

Bad Sülze

A mine car on rails—this was used in the past to haul peat from the surrounding bogs as fuel for evaporating the brine. Using these mine cars, the peat sods were hauled by the peat-loading women from the barge on the Recknitz River—just a few hundred meters from here—to the firebox of the boiler. The saltworks consumed millions of peat sods to boil the salt. These were mainly harvested from the Langsdorf Moor. During the summer, 200 people worked here. At 6 a.m., before dawn, they set off for the moor. Here, the peat was initially cut by hand. It wasn’t until later that they acquired cutting machines, which made the work easier. Men and women worked together. The men cut the peat and the women carted it to the drying area. In good weather, the stacked peat would dry in six weeks. But woe betide them if it was a wet year. The workers in the bog would get soaked to the skin and had to figure out how to get their clothes dry again by the next morning. Every 14 days, the district judge would come to the bog to inspect the work. Wages were always paid on Saturday.
