Ocean of longing

Ocean of longing

Detershagen

We often become aware of our wishes and desires during a walk by the sea, as Susanne Pohlmann did. She has expressed this in this series and would like to inspire us too. A series of water paintings - it sounds so harmless, but what confronts us here is a churning sea, a mighty river powerfully making its way through the landscape. Her acrylic paintings, some of which are large-format, are not naturalistic depictions of what the artist sees, but rather express the effect they have on her own feelings. Expressive and moving - these are probably the adjectives that best describe her works. Be it the roaring spray that washes around the rocks, or the stones themselves, which seem to glow from within. Rhythm and movement, perhaps also a skill from her time as a dancer, make the pictures exciting and captivate the viewer.

Palmer, Location

Palmer, Location

Garz/Rügen

Palmer Ort is the southernmost point of the island of Rügen and, at the same time, of the Zudar Peninsula, which is part of Rügen. The cape is located within the municipality of Garz/Rügen. Palmer Ort marks the transition from the Greifswald Bodden to the Strelasund. On the landward side, Palmer Ort is bordered by a small coastal protection forest. A forest trail runs through this forest—part of which is marked as a nature trail—leading to Palmer Ort. The nearest settlement is the small village of Grabow, located about 1 km to the northeast. At Palmer Ort itself, there is a narrow natural sandy beach that, due to its remote location, is rarely visited by tourists. Anglers use this stretch of beach to fish for pike. In winter, when ice drifts occur at Palmer Ort, ice jams frequently form, which can reach heights of several meters. In 1372, a ship carrying 90 pilgrims sank off Palmer Ort during a storm; the pilgrims were on their way to St. Lawrence Church in Zudar. Belief in an image of the Virgin Mary located there—which was said to perform miracles—disappeared after this disaster. During the Pomeranian Campaign of the Great Northern War, Palmer Ort became the scene of military operations.

Juliusruh Park

Juliusruh Park

Breege OT Juliusruh

Beautiful park in the village of Juliusruh. Juliusruh Park is a late Baroque park dating from around 1800. The park was laid out on dune sand by Julius von der Lancken in the last third of the so-called "Swedish period", i.e. when Rügen belonged to the Kingdom of Sweden, from 1795. The result was a circular rococo-style park with a single-storey country house, riding arena, bathing house, orange house and two pavilions. The highlight is the swan house on an island in the pond to the south-east. The lime tree seedlings came from Skåne in southern Sweden in 1795. After the estate was sold to Philip Karl Riekmann in 1803, the country house and the associated farm buildings quickly fell into disrepair and the park became overgrown. In 1835, the city of Stralsund acquired the property. Since then, the park has been used as a spa park. A granite stone is dedicated to the initiator of this park. Only part of the once magnificent park has been preserved as a spa park. Admission to the park is free. It is open all year round. Guided tours can be arranged by appointment.
