STRALSUND MUSEUM St. Catherine's Monastery

STRALSUND MUSEUM St. Catherine's Monastery

Stralsund

CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO CONVERSION The first museum in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund was founded in 1858 and opened a year later as the "Provinzialmuseum für Neuvorpommern und Rügen". It is also the oldest museum in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Exhibitions on prehistory and early history, urban history, folklore and naval history are presented in three listed buildings. The most beautiful and at the same time most valuable exhibit is the gold jewelry from Hiddensee found in 1872-74. Founded in 1858, the museum is housed in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen in the heart of the listed old town. Two gold treasures from the Viking Age can be admired here, of which the gold jewelry from Hiddensee is not only legendary, but also world-famous. Artistic Stralsund faience invites you to look and marvel, as do rare medieval ecclesiastical vestments. Many other highlights tell of the eventful history of the once so influential city on the Sound, of which it was said in the Middle Ages "...that it was a pearl in the crown of the Hanseatic League...". The largest and most beautiful room in the monastery is the summer hall. This magnificent hall impresses with its wonderful architectural design, which also includes a medieval vault painting. A wide variety of exhibits await visitors on the 1st floor. In addition to craft scrolls, seals and craftsmen's silver, there is above all magnificent furniture from different eras on display. Tableware made of glass and porcelain as well as household items made of copper and brass give an idea of the past splendor of bourgeois parlors. A special highlight are the astronomical and nautical instruments from the collection of Axel Graf von Löwen, who, as Governor General of Swedish Pomerania, bequeathed his unique collection, which also includes art objects of all kinds, to Stralsund in his will in 1761. Schill memorial plaque

Schill memorial plaque

Stralsund

This stone commemorates Ferdinand von Schill, a Prussian officer who fought against the French occupying forces in Stralsund. On May 25, 1809, Ferdinand von Schill rode into the town of Stralsund at the head of his regiment. A few days later, the freedom fighter fell here in Fährstraße, fatally shot by a bullet. On the night of May 31, 1835, his admirers embedded this memorial plaque in the pavement at the exact spot where Schill had fallen.

Putbus Castle Church

Putbus Castle Church

Putbus

The castle church in Putbus Park Until 1840, Putbus was part of the parish of Vilmnitz. In this year, the parish acquired its own parish registers and its own churchyard was consecrated. Putbus became an independent parish. Over time, the need to create a separate church building grew. Initially, the theater was to be converted into a church. However, as this plan met with resistance from the residents, the Kursalon in the park was converted into a church in 1891/92 - the upper galleries were removed and their windows moved inwards, and the open arcades to the dance hall were fitted with windows. The result was a three-aisled church. A church tower was erected in place of the northern extension, while the southern extension retained its shape. The church was consecrated on Reformation Day in 1892 and the bells rang for the first time on July 12, 1893. The castle church is impressively different from the brick churches typical of the island. It is flooded with light, with large arched windows opening onto the park. It forms an impressive ensemble with the neoclassical buildings in the park and in the adjacent streets.

Putbus Castle Park

Putbus Castle Park

Putbus

Although Putbus Castle, once the stately home of the Princes of Putbus, was razed to the ground in 1962, the beautiful castle park is still a reminder of this magnificent time. Magnolias and sequoias adorn the English-style garden. The park was laid out in 1804 by the founder of the town, Wilhelm Malte I zu Putbus, originally in the French style. It was later developed in the style of an English landscape park. The classicist palace around which the park was laid out was unfortunately demolished in the 1960s. The orangery, the stables, the mausoleum, the parish church and the castle church as well as the monkey and bird house are still preserved. Then as now, Putbus is not only famous for its castle and circus, but also for its scenic surroundings. It is not surprising that even Caspar David Friedrich visited the Putbus region. He incorporated the impressions he gained into his paintings "A View of Putbus" and "Landscape with Rainbow", for example.

Pansevitz castle ruins and park

Pansevitz castle ruins and park

Pansevitz

Built in the 16th century and owned by the family of Baron von Krassow ever since, the estate, originally built in the Renaissance style, was rebuilt and extended in the Neo-Renaissance style around 1860. In the 19th century, the estate came into the possession of the Princes of Inn- und Knyphausen. After the expropriation in 1945, the castle was occupied by several families. Due to inadequate maintenance, the estate became increasingly dilapidated and was used as a quarry after the last residents moved out. The beginnings of the park date back to the 17th century. The baroque garden was laid out around the castle and gradually expanded. In the 19th century, it was transformed into an English-style landscape garden covering around 40 hectares. Important elements of the park include the Wundersee lake with the island of love and the exotic tree species planted in the later 19th century, most of which are still present. v. Knyphausen family managed to reacquire significant parts of the park after reunification. Restored in 2006 and rescued from its slumber, it now shines in its former beauty. Dendrological rarities, miracle lake with love island, heart and kidney pond. The only cemetery forest (alternative burial under trees) in a public park.

Black Lake (Granitz)

Black Lake (Granitz)

Sellin

The Black Lake on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen is part of the Sellin district and is located in the Granitz forest and nature reserve. The lake covers an area of 23 hectares and its greatest depth is 15 meters. The height of the lake level above sea level is 54.2 meters above sea level. The nutrient-poor lake belongs to a very rare type of water body, the so-called kettle lake. Intermediate moorland and raised bogs form around the edges. In part, there is oscillating blanket vegetation. Cotton grass, peat moss, cranberry, feverfew and rosemary heather can be found here. The entire lake, the existing moors at the edge and a 100-metre-wide strip of forest surrounding the lake are designated as a core zone (total reserve) of the South-East Rügen Biosphere Reserve. However, the lake is accessible to hikers and cyclists via the hiking trail leading from Binz to Sellin. You can reach the lake via a small wooden footbridge.

Slavic castle rampart Garz

Slavic castle rampart Garz

Garz

The Garz castle rampart is a reminder of the former settlement by Slavs. The hill fort, which was built in the middle of the 12th century, underwent several test excavations and sondages from as early as 1725, which brought Slavic pottery and a large number of iron finds to light. The excavation results, as well as written records, prove that the West Slavic Rans had a princely seat here. However, this castle, built as a wood-and-earth construction, is far less important than the Karenz temple castle near Venz. It was not until around 1300 that Garz, as a princely seat and young town, gained more power and influence on the island of Rügen through the re-erection of a castle on the site of the former Slavic rampart. St. Paul's Church Bobbin

St. Paul's Church Bobbin

Bobbin

The Bobbin church is the only preserved fieldstone church on Rügen, which is visible from afar on a hill. The church has belonged to the Protestant parish of Altenkirchen & Wiek since 2006. The nave with choir and sacristy was completed around 1400. The tower was added 100 years later. The building has undergone various changes since then. The last renovation inside the church took place in 1954/55, and the roof, originally covered with slate, was renovated in 1971. In the 15th and 16th centuries, St. Pauli was one of several pilgrimage churches on Rügen. According to historical sources, Pope Boniface IX granted indulgences to visitors and benefactors of the "ecclesia parochialis S. Pauli in Bobbin" (belonging to the diocese of Roskilde). In 1472 a head of the "Brotherhood of St. Mary" is mentioned, after the Reformation the patronage presumably lay with the respective sovereign, since the 2nd half of the 17th century with the lordship of Spyker. From the second half of the 17th century, it was held by the lordship of Spyker. The oldest item in the church is the Fünte (baptismal font), probably dating from 1300. Services are held every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 10 a.m. from Easter to Thanksgiving.

City wall

City wall

Stralsund

Large parts of the 700-year-old town wall are still preserved and have been continuously restored over the last few decades. Compared to other medieval towns, Stralsund still has large sections of the town wall. In the 13th century, the fortifications still consisted of piles. However, it was quickly replaced by a stone wall with towers and battlements in the 14th century. The section of the town wall between the former Hospitaler Tor gate and the Kütertor gate, which still exists today, was restored in the 1960s. The battlement walkways and the Wiekhäuser are also still preserved here. Two of the former ten gates still exist - the Kniepertor, mentioned in a document as early as 1293 and now used as an original dwelling, and the aforementioned Kütertor. The latter was built in 1446 and is sparsely structured with blinds on both sides. A tent roof with a lantern and steep helmet forms the end.
