Maidens' Fountain
The "Mägdebrunnen" was recreated in 2003 by the German sculptor Günter Kaden on the site of a historic fountain.
Its design details have repeatedly inspired various interpretations. Here, where Schillstraße flows into Fährstraße in the direction of the harbor, a fountain "am Schilde" stood for centuries to supply the surrounding population with water. It was the task of the maidservants to fetch the water from the well and carry it to the patrician houses. The sculptor Günter Kaden took up this theme as part of an urban planning competition, won the competition and designed the fountain from a block of granite with a group of bronze figures in 2003. The bronze figures show three maids fetching water and whispering to each other.
Mägdebrunnen Stralsund - bronze figures at a historic location
At the transition from Schillstraße to Fährstraße, not far from Stralsund's harbor, the Mägdebrunnen has stood since 2003 - a striking fountain made of a massive granite block, crowned by three bronze figures. The sculptor Günter Kaden created the work as part of an urban planning competition, which he won. It takes up an everyday theme of the city's history: the fetching of water by the maidservants of the surrounding patrician houses.
Three maidservants, one well - a story from old StralsundFor centuries, a well "am Schilde" supplied the surrounding population with water at this location. It was the task of the maidservants to fetch the water and carry it to the households. Günter Kaden's bronze figures show three women fetching water - and whispering to each other. This lively scene still invites various interpretations today and makes the maidservants' fountain one of the quiet but remarkable works of art in Stralsund's cityscape.
Mägdebrunnen in the context of the old town and the Baltic Sea region
The Mägdebrunnen fountain fits seamlessly into the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of Stralsund's old town. Visitors to the Hanseatic city on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will find an authentic piece of everyday urban history here - close to the harbor and ideal for combining with a walk along the waterfront or a trip to the nearby island of Rügen.
