Holy Cross Church in Kemnitz

Holy Cross Church in Kemnitz

Kemnitz

The Holy Cross Church in Kemnitz has a long history. In the Kemnitz rectory, right next to the church, there is a small exhibition dedicated to the painter Friedrich August von Klinkowström. The baptismal register contains the entry for the birth of the future painter, educator, and writer. The themed cycling route “Route of North German Romanticism,” which runs from Greifswald to Wolgast, leads, among other places, to the sites associated with this Romantic painter. The Kemnitz church was built around 1300. The Eldena Monastery sponsored the construction of the church, which was expanded several times over the following centuries but also suffered severe damage. The church acquired its current appearance in the mid-18th century. The Neo-Gothic church tower with its four small corner turrets was built in the 19th century. The church is a listed historic monument. Holy Cross churches are churches dedicated to or named after the Holy Cross on which Jesus died. There are three other churches with this name in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: in Rambin on Rügen, in Rostock, and in Waren. Freest Local History Museum

Freest Local History Museum

Freest

The small museum houses a collection of a wide variety of everyday objects that were part of daily life in fishing and agriculture and were gathered by the town’s residents to create a lovingly arranged exhibition. The famous Freest fishing rugs are particularly worth seeing. The idea for the local history museum came decades ago from Erich Mundstock, a teacher and principal at the Freest school. He collected many everyday objects from times past. In 1962, Erich Mundstock established the local history museum at the Freest school, thereby giving his collection a permanent home. Upon his death in 1987, the original local history museum was closed. After the political transition in the GDR, the former customs house—which had been used as an NVA base for decades—was handed over to the municipality of Kröslin. In 1992, the Freester Heimatstube was reopened in the building’s rooms. Today, it comprises seven rooms for permanent exhibitions as well as spaces for temporary exhibitions and lectures. Visitors to the local history museum can take a journey back in time to an old-fashioned living room and kitchen, as well as a bedroom and a schoolroom. All of the items—including dolls and doll carriages, a sewing room, and a hairdressing salon—were donated by people from the region. The most famous exhibits in the local history museum, however, are the Freest fishermen’s rugs. Crafted by residents of the community, each rug tells its own story.

Göhren Local History Museum

Göhren Local History Museum

Ostseebad Göhren

The exhibitions in the Mönchgut Museum of Local History deal with life on Mönchgut from its tangible historical beginnings to the more recent past. In the Mönchgut Museum of Local History in Göhren you can discover life on the Mönchgut peninsula from its beginnings to the recent past. It is housed in a cane-roofed, listed building, which was built around 1850 as a farmer's, fisherman's and pilot's house. In 1963, it passed to the municipality of Göhren and has served as a local history museum ever since. On display are prehistoric and early historical finds, geography and geology of the peninsula as well as the historical development of Göhren from its beginnings as a small fishing and farming village to the third largest Baltic seaside resort on the island of Rügen. There are also changing exhibitions, numerous events, attractive picnic areas and a small museum store. If you don't want to wander through the exhibitions on your own, book a guided tour.

Vilm Island

Vilm Island

Vilm

Vilm, the small sister island of Rügen, which is only a few hectares in size, is known for its gnarled oaks and sunrises, which captivated Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. They walked the island together and wrote letters to Goethe about its beauty. Around 6,000 years ago, the 94-hectare island of Vilm was formed from moraines left behind by glaciers. It is still an untouched natural paradise today. Forests of ancient oaks and giant beeches characterize the landscape. The beginning of settlement on Vilm can be traced back to the Stone Age. Once a holy place of the Slavs, later a Christian pilgrimage site and medieval hermitage, a princely summer residence in the 19th century and soon after a meeting place for landscape painters - Vilm has always exerted a great attraction. This is probably most evident in painting. Over the last 200 years, the island has been visited by over 350 painters. The entire island has been a nature reserve since 1936. Guided tours of Vilm Island take place from the end of March to the end of October. Daily at 10 a.m. and a second guided tour from 1.30 p.m. if required. The starting point is the port of Lauterbach. The motorboat "Julchen" will take you to the island of Vilm. The excursion leads partly through rough terrain and covers a distance of 3 kilometers. The outward and return journeys take 15 minutes each. The guided tour lasts 2.5 hours. The participation fee must be paid in cash and on the day of the tour on the motorboat "Julchen". Payment by EC card is not possible. Important: Unauthorized access to the island and taking animals with you is prohibited. Due to the limited number of participants, pre-registration is essential.

CRANORAMA

CRANORAMA

Altenpleen

KRANORAMA am Günzer See is located on the mainland between Barth and Stralsund. This modern and barrier-free observation station for cranes was opened in 2015 and enables undisturbed and near-natural observation of cranes and other resting birds and birds of prey. On the viewing platform, visitors can observe cranes during their resting period in spring and fall. The Kranorama provides audiovisual media as well as a live broadcast of the cranes from the field on a large screen. In the fall, the cranes can usually be seen from September to early November. They also make a brief stopover in spring, especially in March. During the day, they can be found in harvested maize fields, where they feed on the energy reserves they need for their onward flight. As the cranes are fed in the neighboring fields of the Kranorama, it is very likely to see them there. Please take care not to disturb the cranes during your visit, as undisturbed stopovers with extensive feeding are vital for the survival of these large birds. It is therefore best to wear muted colors and move quietly. From April, the Kranorama takes a summer break. It reopens in the fall when the cranes are resting. Outdoor observation is still possible outside opening hours.

Until a fire in 1955, the originally taller tower still had a half-timbered top, which was not restored when the tower roof was reconstructed.

Together with the city’s two other churches, St. Nikolai and St. Jacobi, it was first mentioned in a document in 1280. The church was built as a hall church and is today one of the most impressive examples of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Highlights inside the church include, in addition to the preserved colored paintings (14th century), the medieval courtroom, the large cargo-lifting wheel in the tower, the memorial chapel, the altarpiece—a replica of Correggio’s “Holy Night”—and the richly decorated pulpit (16th century).

Smallest gallery in Western Pomerania

Smallest gallery in Western Pomerania

Volksdorf

The gallery offers children and young people from the surrounding area in particular a platform to have their say, strengthen their place in the community and support the fun of creating. In certain formats, such as exhibitions and workshops, vacation guests from nearby can also come into contact with the young artists. Who knows, maybe this will lead to creative art sponsorships? Children must be able to play an active role in shaping art and feel that they are important! Galleries are important public spaces. Here, people of all ages and social classes can come together who otherwise hardly ever meet in everyday life. Exhibitions will be held here at regular intervals in conjunction with a vernissage. Artist Paul Torsten Hahn and his partner Sabine Berendse are responsible for the project: "We want to show young people that we want them to be part of society and democracy and that we are interested in them." Of course, young and young-at-heart vacation guests can also visit the gallery and talk to the young artists at one or other of the events.
