HTM Peenemünde Historical and Technical Museum
In 1942, the Peenemünde Army Research Center successfully launched the world’s first rocket into space.
Today, the Historical-Technical Museum documents one of the most spectacular—yet also one of the most dangerous—technical breakthroughs of the 20th century. Between 1936 and 1945, the Peenemünde Army Research Center was one of the most modern technology centers in the world. In October 1942, the world’s first rocket launch into space took place from here. From the very beginning, however, the research served only one purpose: to use advanced technology to achieve military superiority. It was only through the massive use of forced laborers, concentration camp inmates, and prisoners of war that the construction of the testing facilities and the subsequent mass production of the rocket—which Goebbels cynically called “Retaliation Weapon 2”—were possible in such a short time. Thousands of people lost their lives during production under inhumane conditions and during the bombardment of Belgian, English, and French cities with the “wonder weapon.” The ambivalence surrounding the use of cutting-edge technology is evident in Peenemünde as in hardly any other place. Together with the historical context, this forms the focus of the exhibition at the Peenemünde Historical-Technical Museum, which can be viewed in the power plant of the former Army Research Center—the largest technical monument in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
HTM Peenemünde Historical-Technical Museum – Technology and History in Conflict
The Peenemünde Historical-Technical Museum on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom is one of the most important technical and memorial sites in northern Germany. In October 1942, the world’s first rocket launch into space took place from here—a milestone in the history of science that is, at the same time, inextricably linked to one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century.
Peenemünde Army Research Center: High Technology in the Service of War
Between 1936 and 1945, the Peenemünde Army Research Center was one of the most modern technology centers in the world. The construction of the facility and the mass production of the so-called “Vergeltungswaffe 2” were only possible through the massive use of forced laborers, concentration camp inmates, and prisoners of war. Thousands of people lost their lives—during construction under inhumane conditions and during the bombardment of civilian targets in Belgium, England, and France.
Exhibition at Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Largest Technical Monument
The HTM’s permanent exhibition is housed in the historic power plant of the former Army Research Institute—Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s largest technical monument. It sheds light on the technical development of rocket technology as well as its military use and the fates of the forced laborers. Nowhere else on the German Baltic Sea coast is the ambivalence of technological progress so strikingly evident. A visit can easily be combined with a stay on Usedom or a trip to the region around Greifswald.
