Map ↗Mecklenburg Forest Glass Museum
● Langen-Brütz
Who knows that glass is made of sand? A small museum in Langen Brütz is dedicated to the topic of glass and its production. Over 600 exhibits bring the old craftsmanship back to life in the Forest Glass Museum. The exhibition focuses in particular on Mecklenburg Forest Glass. Its name comes from the fact that the ingredient - ferrous sand - turns green when it melts. Another reason is that a lot of wood was needed for glass production, which is why the glassworks were built directly in the forest. A few hundred years ago, Mecklenburg was one of the largest glass centers, as the iron-rich sand was found here, potash could be extracted as an additive, and there was plenty of wood and water available. The potash was extracted from wood ash, whereby only a small amount of the original volume (about one thousandth) could be obtained by leaching and annealing wood ash. Most of the energy required to produce forest glass - 80 to 85 percent - was used to produce potash. Depending on the type and condition, one to three solid cubic meters of wood were needed to produce one kilogram of glass.

Wittenburg Town Hall
● Wittenburg
If there were a beauty contest for town halls, the Wittenburg building would probably be one of the favorites to win. With its double staircase, archway and four huge rectangular towers, the restored building is more reminiscent of a castle than an administrative building. It would be hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for a fairy tale than Wittenburg Town Hall. Its unusual architectural style, based on English Tudor Gothic, makes Wittenburg Town Hall unique among the town halls of Mecklenburg. It was built in 1852 according to plans by the Schwerin court architect Georg Adolf Demmler and was officially opened on January 8, 1853. Today, Wittenburg Town Hall is one of the most important buildings from the historicism period. After extensive renovation in 1996, it now shines in new splendor and is a very popular photo motif.
Equestrian monument to Frederick Francis II in Schwerin Palace Gardens
● Schwerin
The equestrian statue of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin stands opposite the palace on a square in the palace garden. Surrounded by flowers, rose bushes and the romantic arcades, the grounds are a highlight of the Schwerin Palace Gardens. A monument to the Grand Duke After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II - the builder of the palace in Schwerin - his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed by donations. It is considered to be the only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg. An eventful history The work by the Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 - in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as all the nobility of the Mecklenburg court. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed according to the typical, mostly military-influenced taste of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a marble plinth more than 4 meters high. The ruler's virtues The plinth is surrounded by allegories of the 4 virtues of rulers: Strength, Justice, Wisdom and Faith. Two commemorative plaques show events from Frederick Francis II's reign - the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument was lucky to survive two wars and two dictatorships. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the end of the war and being scrapped.

Ludwigslust town church
● Ludwigslust
The "temple-like" town church in Ludwigslust is absolutely unusual by Mecklenburg standards. Not only the colossal altarpiece by two Baroque artists and the magnificent gallery for high nobility are well worth seeing. The church can be visited. The town church was built in 1770 as the court church for Ludwigslust Palace and was designed by court architect Johann Joachim Busch. Together with the palace square and the palace, it forms the largest baroque ensemble in Mecklenburg. In addition to the north-south orientation of the building, the Ludwigslust town church has numerous other special features. Compared to the huge altarpiece "Annunciation of the Shepherds" by the two court painters Dietrich Findorf and Johann Heinrich Suhrland, the bright interior with its design is almost plain. With a painted area of around 350 m², it is considered the largest altarpiece in Europe. The princely box is just as magnificent. Most of the decorations, ceiling rosettes and ornaments come from the Ludwigslust carton factory - in other words, they are made from the famous Ludwigslust papier-mâché. In the central aisle is the sarcophagus of Duke Friedrich, known as the Pious, who commissioned the church in Ludwigslust. The stone sarcophagus was made from a boulder weighing several tons at the grinding mill in Schwerin. Since the late 19th century, there has also been a frieze organ in Ludwigslust. The town church is Protestant and services are held regularly. The church is open to visitors from Tuesdays to Sundays and information material on the history of the church is available on site. Guided tours of the church are available on request.

Tine's weaving and candle barn
● Groß Laasch
If you want to experience how decorative candles are made, the weaving and candle barn in Groß Laasch is just the place for you. Here, Christine Gabler makes pretty light and warmth dispensers by hand, which create a cozy atmosphere not only in the cold season. In the converted barn of a typical Mecklenburg farmhouse, she produces candles in a wide variety of colors and shapes. Christine Gabler mainly uses high-quality palm oil-based stearin as a material, which ensures that the candles burn two to three times longer than conventional kerosene candles and also produce significantly less soot. Around 40 different shapes and 18 colors can be combined with each other, so that in the end each candle is unique. Of particular interest to visitors is the Candle Barn's offer to get hands-on. In the experience workshop, young and old candle makers are introduced to the art of candle casting and can create a pretty gift or personal souvenir after just 15 minutes of expert instruction. Vests, jackets, coats, scarves, belts and curtains are also made in the weaving and candle barn using traditional handicraft techniques. In the show workshop, visitors learn about the old craft and find out lots of interesting facts about the material properties of hand-spun wool, which is even said to have a healing effect. The weaving and candle barn is only open by appointment.

first mecklenburg porcelain manufactory - Kerstin Behrens
● Sukow
In Sukow in the Lewitz nature reserve, porcelain painter and designer Kerstin Behrens lets you look over her shoulder in her workshop." Only 14 kilometers away from the state capital Schwerin and yet in the middle of nature: "This is where I find the motifs for my decorations on tableware and accessories: local trees, grasses, flowers and insects. But the proximity to the Baltic Sea and the Mecklenburg lakes is also important to me: I also work fish and sails into my objects as sculptural motifs." Even as a schoolgirl, Kerstin Behrens worked in a branch of the Boizenburg tile factory, and her desire to complete her training in the stronghold of porcelain, the State Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen, was clear from an early age. This was followed by design studies in Heiligendamm: "I want to continue the Meissen tradition, but I am looking for my own artistic expression." This also includes hand-painted unique pieces according to customer wishes. And so the range of expression is enormously broad: from clear Nordic elegance to dancing herrings. The special firing technique produces hard porcelain, which is as hard as diamond and is therefore also used in laboratories. Thin-walled, shimmering white, filigree objects are created: "I have designed lanterns with motifs of local leaves, in which the candlelight makes the porcelain appear almost transparent: Dandelion, oak or lime leaves made of light." Painting on the porcelain also creates an interplay of light and color: "The high white content of the porcelain allows me to paint on it like on paper. This gives me the opportunity to make the colors very fine, bright and transparent." Kerstin Behrens is happy to pass on her enthusiasm for porcelain painting to her visitors: "In my courses, participants can create their own small works of art from porcelain, discover their painting talents and get to know the work in a porcelain manufactory in a very practical way." Opening hours: Mon-Fri 4pm - 6pm, Sat 10am - 6pm
