The Gadebusch Town Hall is located at Markt 1.
It dates back to the 14th century. The town hall on the market square was built around 1340. In 1618, it was renovated using the medieval structure as a foundation, and the current main gable with the court arbour and the rear facade were added. It underwent extensive renovation from 1998 to 2000.
Gadebusch Town Hall – A History Dating Back to the 14th Century
Gadebusch Town Hall is one of the most remarkable medieval buildings in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Built around 1340 on the market square of the small town of Gadebusch, it looks back on a history spanning nearly 700 years. This makes it one of the oldest surviving town halls in the region between Wismar and Schwerin.
Court Arbour and Main Gable from the Early 17th Century
In 1618, the building underwent a major renovation—while preserving its medieval structural elements. As part of this renovation, the striking main gable with its characteristic court arbour, as well as the current rear facade, were added. This combination of a Gothic basic structure and Renaissance elements makes the town hall a uniquely architecturally significant testament to Mecklenburg’s urban development history.
Renovation and current condition of the town hall in Gadebusch
From 1998 to 2000, the historic building underwent extensive renovation and was preserved for future generations. Anyone exploring the Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—for example, on the way from the Hanseatic cities of Wismar or Lübeck toward Lake Schwerin—will find in Gadebusch an authentic glimpse into the medieval urban history of northern Germany.
