The oldest preserved fortified castle in Mecklenburg is located in Neustadt-Glewe. In the museum, visitors of all ages can not only visit the tower with its deep dungeon, the guard and defense room and the restored living room, but also learn interesting facts about life in the castle and the town. The castle is also home to the tourist information office and the castle restaurant. The old Neustadt-Glewe Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Mecklenburg and was intended to serve as military protection for the southern and south-eastern borders of the County of Schwerin against attacks by the County of Dannenberg and the Bishoprics of Havelberg and Ratzeburg. Around 1250, the Count of Schwerin had a castle built on a natural Elde dune on the outskirts of Neustadt-Glewe. It consists of the Old and New Houses, a curtain wall with a gate and battlements as well as a keep with shooting holes, a dungeon, a knight's hall and an abbey oriel. While the Old House served as living quarters for the castle bailiffs and servants, the ducal residence was located in the New House. Over the course of its 700-year history, the castle has undergone various uses and several structural changes. It has been completely renovated since 2006. Today it houses exhibitions on the history of the castle and the town as well as art and special exhibitions. On a tour of the castle complex, visitors can see the tower with dungeon, guard and defense room as well as the restored living hall. The "Hofstube" is of particular importance. It is decorated with Gothic and Renaissance wall paintings and has a medieval hot-air heating system. Once a year, on the first weekend in June, the castle comes alive with medieval hustle and bustle. Market people, jugglers, knights and the castle nobility invite you to the castle festival. Get married at the castle Neustadt-Glewe Castle is the perfect location for your fairytale wedding! Receive your guests in the castle courtyard, for example. The castle meadow is ideal for the wedding photo shoot! The team at Neustadt-Glewe Castle will be happy to help you plan your big day. Castle tower Plau am See

Castle tower Plau am See

📍 Plau am See

The castle tower in Plau was built in 1448/49 and is still completely preserved. The 3 m thick walls and the 11 m deep dungeon, as well as the tower ascent, amaze locals and guests alike when they visit. The historic castle tower in Plau am See is the remaining part of a fortification that was built in 1449 to stop the raids of Brandenburg knights. During the Thirty Years' War, it offered protection against sieges and raids by the Swedes and Saxons. At the end of the war, the decision was made to "grind down" the fortifications, which meant dismantling them. Only the castle tower was spared this fate. Until 1985, the tower was not used and was open to everyone, which was particularly pleasing for the children of Plau, who had great adventures. In 2000, the Museum Friends of Plau am See also set themselves the task of renovating the tower and making it attractive for visitors.

Castle rampart at Cape Arkona

Castle rampart at Cape Arkona

📍 Putgarten

The "Jaromarsburg" is located at Cape Arkona, the northernmost point of the island of Rügen, and is reminiscent of the Slavic era. The long-known "Jaromarsburg" on the northern tip of the island of Rügen was the sacred place of worship of the Ranen, a West Slavic people. It was built as a temple sanctuary in honor of Svantevit, the main god of the Slavs on Rügen. From the 9th century until the fall of the castle in 1168, this last pagan bastion was the political and religious center of power on the island. The castle rampart, which is still 12 m high today, with its moat and the interior of the castle, has been exposed to the constantly advancing coastal erosion for decades, which is why numerous sondages, prospections and excavations have taken place since 1868. Burgwall ferry

Burgwall ferry

📍 Teterow

The passenger ferry connects the mainland with Burgwallinsel - a former Slavic settlement. Originally, the farmers of Teterow grazed their cattle on Burgwallinsel, but at some point they created a small ferry link between the island and the mainland. Over time, the island became a popular excursion destination. A restaurant was built on the island and a passenger ferry was put into operation. This is still the case today. The Burgwall ferry runs to Burgwallinsel from Easter to September. Current information: End of season from September 15, 2025

Castle Wall Island

Castle Wall Island

📍 Teterow

The former Slavic settlement is now a local recreation area. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. A gem in the immediate vicinity of Teterow is the Burgwallinsel in Lake Teterow. Until the early Middle Ages, the island was connected to the mainland by a 750-metre-long wooden bridge - an architecturally perfect structure without a single nail. Today, the former Slavic settlement can be reached by ferry or the launch "Regulus" and offers those seeking peace and relaxation. If you want to be physically active, you can hire water scooters and rowing boats on the island, swim at the natural beach (with a small sunbathing area, unguarded) or explore the surrounding area on the island hiking trail. Younger guests can look forward to a playground. The WENDENKRUG invites you to stop for refreshments. Delicacies from the region are served in the restaurant or on the lakeside terrace, and those who wish can also rest their weary heads here. In summer 2010, the island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests arriving by car can use the Burgwallinsel parking lot and walk from there to the ferry. Alternatively, the parking lot at the bathing establishment can be used. From here, you can reach Burgwallinsel via the NaturBad using the "Regulus" launch. The island can be reached daily from Easter to the end of September, except on Mondays (closing day). Current information: End of season from September 15
