Slavic castle rampart Garz

The Garz castle rampart is a reminder of the former settlement by Slavs. The hill fort, which was built in the middle of the 12th century, underwent several test excavations and sondages from as early as 1725, which brought Slavic pottery and a large number of iron finds to light. The excavation results, as well as written records, prove that the West Slavic Rans had a princely seat here. However, this castle, built as a wood-and-earth construction, is far less important than the Karenz temple castle near Venz. It was not until around 1300 that Garz, as a princely seat and young town, gained more power and influence on the island of Rügen through the re-erection of a castle on the site of the former Slavic rampart. The SPEICHER is an eco-sociocultural center in Stralsund’s Old Town. The SPEICHER on Katharinenberg in Stralsund is a place for EVERYONE. Inclusion means that every person naturally belongs here. Appearance, social background, language, disabilities, age, and gender do not matter. At the playing card factory, for example, it’s clear how apprentices, participants in entry-level training programs, those performing community service, and workshop staff work and learn together. The facility also serves as a placement site for two Federal Volunteer Service participants. This diversity is not immediately apparent to visitors to the museum workshop and the building. That is inclusion. Through networking with other users in the building, the Old Town, and the outlying neighborhoods of Grünhufe and Knieper West, the SPEICHER is an important, open, and accessible cultural hub in the city. On the ground floor of the brick building of an old steam mill, alongside the playing card factory’s machinery weighing several metric tons, there is a museum workshop where the cultural heritage of letterpress printing is actively kept alive. Work is carried out daily on the typesetting cabinets with their lead type, the Linotype typesetting machine, and the Heidelberg cylinder printing press. The playing card factory thus serves as a career orientation program for those seeking entry-level qualifications and as a support for the apprenticeships of our two future media designers, who are being trained in partnership with two Stralsund-based companies. It also serves as a workspace for the youth workshop run by our youth social work program. Thus, the facility—which is funded by the city—is clearly aligned with the “Printing and Socioculture” program.

St. Paul's Church Bobbin

The Bobbin church is the only preserved fieldstone church on Rügen, which is visible from afar on a hill. The church has belonged to the Protestant parish of Altenkirchen & Wiek since 2006. The nave with choir and sacristy was completed around 1400. The tower was added 100 years later. The building has undergone various changes since then. The last renovation inside the church took place in 1954/55, and the roof, originally covered with slate, was renovated in 1971. In the 15th and 16th centuries, St. Pauli was one of several pilgrimage churches on Rügen. According to historical sources, Pope Boniface IX granted indulgences to visitors and benefactors of the "ecclesia parochialis S. Pauli in Bobbin" (belonging to the diocese of Roskilde). In 1472 a head of the "Brotherhood of St. Mary" is mentioned, after the Reformation the patronage presumably lay with the respective sovereign, since the 2nd half of the 17th century with the lordship of Spyker. From the second half of the 17th century, it was held by the lordship of Spyker. The oldest item in the church is the Fünte (baptismal font), probably dating from 1300. Services are held every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 10 a.m. from Easter to Thanksgiving.

Large parts of the 700-year-old town wall are still preserved and have been continuously restored over the last few decades. Compared to other medieval towns, Stralsund still has large sections of the town wall. In the 13th century, the fortifications still consisted of piles. However, it was quickly replaced by a stone wall with towers and battlements in the 14th century. The section of the town wall between the former Hospitaler Tor gate and the Kütertor gate, which still exists today, was restored in the 1960s. The battlement walkways and the Wiekhäuser are also still preserved here. Two of the former ten gates still exist - the Kniepertor, mentioned in a document as early as 1293 and now used as an original dwelling, and the aforementioned Kütertor. The latter was built in 1446 and is sparsely structured with blinds on both sides. A tent roof with a lantern and steep helmet forms the end.

The Stralsund city forest - a city forest on the moor pond. The Stralsund city forest is primarily used for recreation, to improve the quality of life in the city, to supply the citizens with wood and, of course, for nature conservation. It is an attractive green belt within the city, covers almost 50 hectares of water and land and was originally a ground moraine. This is why a layer of peat up to seven meters thick still rests under the moor pond today. The very nutrient-rich and moist soil favors the growth of plants such as reed beds and silver willows. Many different paths and trails lead through the wooded area, which extends north to southwest around the moor pond. This means that a walk around the moor pond is always a walk through the forest.

The rocky beach at Ruschvitz invites you to take a hike over scree along low, steep banks, where there are many interesting finds to discover, such as seashells, fossilized sea urchins, or boulders. The impressive boulders from the Ice Age are a popular subject for painters and photographers. As early as 1806, Caspar David Friedrich found himself surrounded by thousands of stones on the beach at Ruschvitz during a trip to Rügen. Very close by, in the northwest of the Jasmund Peninsula, on the rocky beach at Ruschvitz, lies one of Rügen’s largest boulders: “Svantekas.” The name comes from Old Slavic and roughly translates to “holy stone.” Measuring about 18 cubic meters, it bears witness to the remarkable power of the Ice Age.
Altefähr seaside resort beach

Rügen's youngest and only seaside resort with a south-facing beach and a unique view of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The beach, which was redesigned in 2014 in the youngest seaside resort on the island of Rügen, is located directly on the Strelasund and is suitable for water sports enthusiasts and anglers. The south-facing location allows you to spend many hours in the sun and enjoy the uniquely beautiful view of the silhouette of the Hanseatic and World Heritage city of Stralsund, especially on summer days. No other place offers such a striking view of the Rügen Bridge, shipyard hall, churches and warehouse district on the harbor island with the Ozeaneum. In addition to a bathing staircase near the playground, there is a bathing ramp further on, which also gives wheelchair users the opportunity to bathe in Altefähr. This is followed by an area 35 meters wide, which was created as a natural beach between rows of groynes. A gentle bathing shore has been created here, which also allows small children to swim and play safely in the shallow water area. Futuristic sun loungers invite you to sunbathe. Separated from these three entrances by a large nature conservation meadow are the dog beach and the open beach area on the steep bank, which offers nudists undisturbed bathing opportunities. Thanks to the special bathing ramp, our beach is ideally suited for use by bathers with walking difficulties. The beach is guarded by the DLRG. The distance to the parking spaces for people with disabilities is 200m. A barrier-free WC is located directly on the beach promenade (Euro key required). A wide range of beach catering is provided by the local restaurants.

The Sundpromenade invites visitors to take long walks along the coast, especially in the warmer months. Especially in the morning and evening hours, runners and Nordic walkers use this beautiful route to run along the Strelasund. This impressive garden with several viewpoints and resting places was created in the 1920s. There are many other sights in the immediate vicinity, such as the city harbor and the Schillanlagen. Café Ventspils and the Rockeria restaurant invite you to linger here with a wonderful view of the Strelasund.

Gustow's Atonement Stone

The 16th-century expiatory stone is located in the Gustow cemetery. This expiatory stone from 1510 can be found in the Gustow cemetery. It is approximately 2.50 m high, 0.60 m wide, and depicts a crucifix with two angels. To the left of it is a kneeling man with a sword on his head; to the right, a chalice and a coat of arms featuring a rune-like family mark are visible. Penitential stones are also known as “murder stones.” They were supposedly erected at the site where a murder took place. According to the inscription on the stone, the preacher at the time, Thomas Norenberg, is said to have been killed here by drunken farmers. The "Teufelsstein" megalithic tomb is located not far from the "Hüningsbusch" megalithic tomb near Seelvitz. Near the “Hüningsbusch” megalithic tomb lies the “Teufelsstein” megalithic tomb. The tomb, which has a severely disturbed burial chamber, belongs to the group of large dolmens with a vestibule typical of Rügen. On the clay soil—which in turn lay on a bed of pigeon-egg-sized flint pebbles—sections composed of individual stone slabs set vertically were identified. Only a few Neolithic finds, such as two hand millstones, some pottery, and an amber bead, were recovered from the burial chamber. A sandstone grinding slab was used as a threshold stone. Another distinctive feature is the three small bowls attached to the surface of the keystone.
