The Greif Training Ship

Experience this historic schooner-brig on a day cruise or a multi-day voyage across the Baltic Sea, following in the footsteps of the Hanseatic League! The steel two-masted vessel with its characteristic square sails was built in 1951 at the Warnow Shipyard in Warnemünde and commissioned under the name “Wilhelm Pieck.” Until 1990, it served as the flagship of the GST Naval School in Greifswald-Wieck and conducted training voyages for young sailors.  After the political transition, the ship was completely overhauled and converted. Since then, it has been owned and operated by the Greif Maritime Sports Center, a municipal enterprise of the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald.  Under the name “GREIF,” it sails as a civilian training ship with volunteer and paying crew members, calling at the most beautiful ports in the North and Baltic Seas from April through October: Ystad, Copenhagen, Klaipeda, Gdańsk, and other destinations are on the itinerary every year. A sail area of 570 m², distributed across 15 sails, allows for a speed of up to 14 knots. The ship is equipped according to the latest safety regulations and holds a sailing license as a training ship. It is sailed jointly by a professional core crew and volunteer crew members from the "Rahsegler GREIF e.V." support association. If you’re looking for a special experience, the “GREIF” is the place for you. By the way, no prior experience is necessary: the team’s experienced crew members introduce new sailors to traditional seamanship step by step. Welcome aboard!

The sailing harbor of the Müritz-Segel-Verein Rechlin e.V. is located on the eastern shore of the Kleine Müritz. The waterway from the Müritz via the smaller lakes and the Havel towards Berlin also begins here. After a one-year detour into acting at the Freiburg Drama School, Elsenhans continued her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Trier, where she honed her artistic skills under professors such as Krämer, Ruth Clemens, Klaus, and Philipp Schulte. At the same time, she gained recognition as an author at Christophorus Verlag in Freiburg. Elsenhans has been working as a freelancer since 1984 and has made a name for herself not only as a painter but also as a designer of exclusive jewelry and silk fashion. Her work thus spans a broad spectrum, ranging from painting and jewelry design to the production of unique silk textiles. Another milestone in her career was her many years of teaching at the Waldkirch Adult Education Center, where she taught watercolor and silk painting. As a member of the F.K.F. (Freiburger Künstlerfreunde), Elsenhans was also actively involved in the regional art scene. Today, Elsenhans lives and works in Kronsberg on the southern Bodden coast. The Katzow Sculpture Park is Europe’s largest sculpture park. With over 100 sculptures spread across 20 hectares, the Katzow Sculpture Park is the largest in Europe. Located between Greifswald and Wolgast, on the most beautiful avenue in Western Pomerania, just outside Katzow, the park features sculptures by 90 artists from 23 countries. The materials used are primarily steel and wood. Some of the sculptures weigh as much as 20 tons and reach a height of 18 meters. Viewers are treated to a fascinating harmony between the high sky, the vast landscape, and the sculptures—an unusual contrast to the high sky and the vast landscape in which they stand. The park is both an art venue and part of the landscape. Here, contemporary art becomes an immediate experience. Benches designed by artists are placed at prominent points. The idea grew into a viable concept. In 1992, the 1st International Sculpture Workshop took place, which became a regular event and has since enriched the sculpture park annually with several sculptures by domestic and international artists. The Art Barn, created in 1994/95 from the ruins of a dilapidated barn, features 600 m² of exhibition space, a workshop, a hall-like gallery with an open roof truss where up to six exhibitions are held annually, a unique gallery café with a shop, and four guest rooms designed by artists. In addition to paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, a small park guide is also available in the shop. Various workshops and courses are offered, including painting classes. In the spring and late fall, the traditional Easter and Christmas markets take place. Art along the way... what a great idea! Sculptures that truly "come to life" in nature and the surrounding cultural landscape. Fire, Millennium Trees, pasque flowers, a fried egg, ancestral or messenger stones, steles, pyramids, and cuddly shells...In every season, in any weather, with ever-changing impressions—a wonderful experience... An open-air exhibition space, a path you can stroll along, taking in not only the art but also breathtaking nature: Mecklenburg Switzerland. As a Swiss person, you might find this name amusing, but by Mecklenburg standards, the hills rise high. The hills rise gently, they slope down gently again, and this creates a smoothness, a harmony, that is unparalleled. At the beginning of the 19th century, Hans Graf von Schlitz was drawn to this area, surrounding his newly built castle, “Burg Schlitz,” with an unusual park. Graf Schlitz planted many trees, including exotic species, and skillfully laid out extensive walking paths. He had thirty-six monuments erected: columns, obelisks, grottoes, and even lakes. Görzhausen was also established at this time—today the center of the new sculpture trail being created between here and Burg Schlitz. In the late 1990s, the two artists Wilfried Duwentester and Bernd Uiberall took up the count’s idea and brought it into dialogue with contemporary sculpture. The sculptures “live” in the open air, in dialogue with the vastness and the existing cultural landscape, which has been shaped by humans for centuries yet still harbors a powerful, almost exuberant natural vitality. The Sculpture Trail thrives largely on the fact that the artists incorporate the existing landscape into their work from the very moment of creation. As walkers, we can then listen to the resulting dialogue between landscape and art. Every visit to the Sculpture Trail is different. The changing weather and seasons constantly lend the landscape a completely different character, creating an enormous variety of impressions even in the same spot, with the same sculpture.

The crew of the "Twee Gebroeders" invites you to enjoy culinary delights under sail with regional specialties. On a small Frisian cargo ship from 1901, guests can unwind in a relaxed atmosphere, listen to the wind and observe nature from a very special perspective. Skûtsjesegeln is sailing with old cargo ships. A skûtsje is a sailing ship without a keel, i.e. a ship with a flat bottom and wooden centerboards on the sides. These ships date back to the last century and were used to bring peat, vegetables, flower bulbs or other cargo as close as possible to the farms or to pick it up from there. The ships had to be able to navigate in shallow waters and were therefore designed to be long and flat. A skûtsje is characterized by speed and manoeuvrability. Sailing on a skûtsje is fun and relaxing. Slavic castle rampart Garz

The Garz castle rampart is a reminder of the former settlement by Slavs. The hill fort, which was built in the middle of the 12th century, underwent several test excavations and sondages from as early as 1725, which brought Slavic pottery and a large number of iron finds to light. The excavation results, as well as written records, prove that the West Slavic Rans had a princely seat here. However, this castle, built as a wood-and-earth construction, is far less important than the Karenz temple castle near Venz. It was not until around 1300 that Garz, as a princely seat and young town, gained more power and influence on the island of Rügen through the re-erection of a castle on the site of the former Slavic rampart.
