Rostock Heath

Rostock Heath

Rostock

No German city or region has a larger contiguous coastal forest than Rostock. The Rostocker Heide covers approximately 6,000 hectares and stretches directly along the Baltic Sea coast from Markgrafenheide to the Baltic Sea resort of Graal-Müritz. In 1252, Prince Heinrich Borwin III sold the Rostock Heath forest area to the city of Rostock. With a total area of over 6,000 hectares, it is Germany’s largest contiguous coastal forest. Over the past centuries, this forest has undergone countless changes. Today, the Rostock Heath is not only essential for sustainable timber management and effective nature conservation but also a unique recreational area for hiking and biking. It boasts a diverse array of flora and fauna, and the mild, invigorating climate—a blend of Baltic Sea and forest air—provides ideal conditions for a healthy and rejuvenating stay. On the discovery trail and the thalassotherapy trails, you’ll discover the natural wonders—both big and small—of the local forests. Since 1996, the entire Rostock Heath has been a landscape conservation area. It is also part of the European NATURA 2000 network of protected areas, which includes approximately 3,500 hectares of forest as the “Forests and Moors of the Rostock Heath” protected area (FFH site). The Rostock Heath is also home to the nature reserves Radelsee, Heiligensee/Hütelmoor, and Schnatermann. Since 2000, the management of the Rostock Heath by the City Forestry Office has been certified according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). This certification is a globally recognized seal of quality for wood products and forest management, based on compliance with ten internationally binding principles and criteria. The Rostock Heath, together with the Vorpommern Bodden Landscape, is one of Germany’s 30 biodiversity hotspots. The area encompasses a unique, diverse coastal landscape.  Colorful Flora: The Rostock Heath provides ideal living conditions for a large number of plant and animal species. Its forested areas consist of 45% coniferous species (including pine, spruce, larch, fir, and Douglas fir) and 55% deciduous species (including beech, oak, birch, and alder). In total, there are currently 19 different conifer species and 44 different deciduous tree species in the Rostock Heath. In contrast, approximately 700 ha of the Rostock Heath consist of bogs, reed beds, and meadows. Particularly noteworthy are the presence of yew, holly, the carnivorous sundew, and numerous orchid species in the flora. The “Sandacker” in Hinrichshagen is a unique feature. The area is a field flora reserve and is one of only three sites in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania where endangered field flora species have a refuge and are not facing extinction. Rare wild plants such as lady’s mantle, rye brome, sand poppy, as well as chamomile and cornflowers grow there undisturbed. Diverse Wildlife: In addition to martens, foxes, and badgers, the heath is home to roe deer, fallow deer, and wild boar, as well as red deer, which depend on large, contiguous, and as undisturbed as possible habitats. With a little luck and patience, you can spot not only these animals but also white-tailed eagles, gray herons, cranes, and kingfishers. The same goes for the diverse insect life in the forest and open areas. Far more elusive are the thirteen bat species that live in the Rostock Heath.

Blacksmith & metalworking shop

Blacksmith & metalworking shop

Bartelshagen II b. Barth

Immortal for thousands of years - the blacksmith's craft. Blacksmithing is one of the oldest craft traditions in human history, dating back to the earliest civilizations. It has not only practical but also artistic aspects that have made it an enduring cultural asset. The combination of zeitgeist and tradition describes the continuous change that this craft undergoes: deeply rooted in old techniques on the one hand, but always open to modern innovations and styles on the other. Classic forge The classic forge stands for master craftsmanship in which iron and steel are traditionally forged using a hammer and anvil. Products of timeless quality are created here: from tools and weapons to decorative elements such as railings and gates. Building locksmith's shop In the metalworking shop, the art of forging is applied to architecture. Railings, fences, stairs and gates are individually designed, often with elaborate decorations. Here, functionality and aesthetics merge to complement both modern and historic buildings with unique metalwork. Stainless steel work By working with stainless steel, blacksmithing has added a modern material to its repertoire that is both robust and corrosion-resistant. Stainless steel is often used in contemporary designs, combining the strength of the metal with a minimalist, polished aesthetic. The art of forging remains everlasting because it is passed down through generations and never loses its roots. Tradition and innovation go hand in hand, and blacksmithing proves that it still has a place in the modern age - always in tune with current needs and the spirit of the times.

Lesser spotted eagle course

Lesser spotted eagle course

Schuenhagen

on the grounds of the Schuenhagen forestry office On the grounds of the Schuenhagen Forestry Office, visitors can learn on the lesser spotted eagle trail what habitat the lesser spotted eagle needs, how to recognize it in the sky and what long journey the eagle makes to its wintering grounds in Africa. Or simply go in search of the eagle yourself! With the help of installed binoculars, children can do this from April to September. The trail is free of charge, freely accessible all year round and designed to be exciting for children and adults alike. You are also welcome to take part in guided tours. Since 2022, there has also been a new nature trail to discover behind the forestry office. In the so-called "Müß" - a natural forest that is left to develop naturally - a path with 7 different stations leads through the world of tree species. The Schuenhagen forestry office, which covers an area of almost 20,000 hectares and is located between Ribnitz-Damgarten and Stralsund, is home to a significant number of lesser spotted eagles throughout Germany. Germany's smallest eagle still feels at home in the dense forests of the "Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft". Here it can raise its young in peace and catch mice and frogs in the surrounding meadows. The Schuenhagen Forestry Office has been supporting the chance.natur project "Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft" (North West Pomeranian Forest Landscape) from the very beginning, which has set itself the task of preserving this special animal species and protecting its habitat. There is a lot to discover on the grounds of the historic forestry office!

St. Mary's Church Ribnitz

St. Mary's Church Ribnitz

Ribnitz-Damgarten

The town church of St. Marien with its massive tower is visible from afar and dominates the townscape. It is a brick building from the 13th century. . It was immediately rebuilt and furnished in the Baroque style (altar and pulpit). At the beginning of the 1980s, the interior of the church underwent further changes: a winter church was installed and the half-timbering in the nave was exposed. The tower (49 meters high, 214 steps) is accessible and the viewing platform offers a beautiful view over the town of Ribnitz and its surroundings. If visibility is good, the towers of Rostock can be seen with the naked eye. Organ concerts and exhibitions are held regularly during the summer months. Construction of the three-aisled hall church began during the city's founding period. Remains of the late Romanesque architectural decoration of the first church are preserved in the form of a round arch frieze on the west side of the nave and in the paired lancet windows. Later conversions and extensions in various architectural styles characterize the image of the church. The great town fire of 1759 destroyed the vaults and medieval interior as well as the tower, which was 100 meters high at the time. Under the direction of the Ludwigslust court architect Johann Joachim Busch, the roof and interior of the church were redesigned in the Baroque style. The central nave was given a wooden semi-circular barrel vault on brick latticework supports, while the side aisles were given flat wooden roofing. The tower lantern was not added until 1841/43 according to designs by Georg Adolph Demmler. After 1980, the interior was remodeled again with the addition of a winter church and parish rooms. In 1994, the organ from the workshop of the Dresden organ builder Jehmlich was inaugurated. Today, in addition to church services and community events, concerts, exhibitions and guided tours take place regularly. The tower (49 meters high, 214 steps) is accessible and the viewing platform offers a beautiful view over the town of Ribnitz and its surroundings. On a clear day, the towers of Rostock can be seen with the naked eye.

Pramort birdwatching point

Pramort birdwatching point

Pramort

From September to November, you can experience an impressive spectacle from the Pramort crane resting area, when the cranes form a wedge-shaped formation or line up in a long chain as they approach their roosts. A green roof has been erected over the rectangular viewing platform. Protection from wind and rain for all observers with binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras. At the same time, the migrating birds are not disturbed by the people watching them below. A win-win situation for humans and animals! Spotting scopes, binoculars and lenses for observing animals can be borrowed from the Max Hünten Haus. The platform was built naturally - ecologically and sustainably. The Pramort crane observation platform is barrier- and disturbance-free.

Pramort Hohe Düne bird observation point

Pramort Hohe Düne bird observation point

Pramort

The most important migratory resting place of the gray crane is located in front of Pramort. The presence of humans disturbs the large birds. They become nervous, turn away and waste valuable energy, which they urgently need for the long flight to their wintering grounds. In the worst case scenario, they may leave their roost - permanently. From here you can observe various water birds, waders and white-tailed eagles. A special feature is the observation of the resting cranes. From September to November, you can experience an impressive spectacle from the Pramort crane roosting site, for example when the cranes form a wedge-shaped formation or line up in a long chain as they approach their roosting sites. Pramort is a large field of white dunes on the Ostzingst. At more than 13 meters high, the high dune of Pramort is also one of the highest white dune landscapes on the German Baltic Sea coast. This dune, the High Dune of Pramort, is an extremely sensitive landscape that would be damaged by any footfall. People don't really belong here. In order to protect the highly sensitive large birds, the number of visitors to Pramort is limited. The entire area is therefore closed to the general public every day from September 1 to the beginning of November from 3 pm until 8 am the next morning. With one exception: you can purchase the National Park Card "Observe - without disturbing" for the day in question at the checkpoint. It is then valid from 3 pm to 7 pm.
