St. Peter Paul's Church

Zingst · Fischland-Darß-Zingst · 54.4374° N, 12.6890° E
St. Peter Paul's Church

The village of Zingst only came into being in the first half of the 19th century, which is why the Zingst church is younger than other sacred buildings in the region.

It was built in two years by order of the Prussian royal government and consecrated in the fall of 1862. The architect of the simple towerless building in neo-Gothic style was the then court architect Friedrich August Stüler, a pupil of Schinkel. Dietrich Bonhoefer's work at the Zingsthof in 1935 and his sermon from the pulpit of the church in the same year are of historical significance. In 1986, the church received a new organ, built by the Sauer company (Frankfurt/Oder) while retaining the case of the old Mehmel organ.

Peter Paul's Church in Zingst - a neo-Gothic monument on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula

The Peter Paul Church in Zingst is one of the more recent sacred buildings on the German Baltic coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. As the village of Zingst only came into being in the first half of the 19th century, the church was built later than many of the historic places of worship in the region - compared to the medieval brick churches in Stralsund, Greifswald or Rostock, for example. Following a decision by the Prussian royal government, the building was erected in just two years and consecrated in the fall of 1862.

Friedrich August Stüler - Schinkel's pupil as architect of the Zingst church

Friedrich August Stüler, then court architect and pupil of the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was responsible for the design of the simple, towerless building in the neo-Gothic style. The restrained, clear design language of the building reflects the neo-Gothic architectural style typical of the time and deliberately contrasts with the Baroque opulence of older church buildings.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the historical significance of the church

The Peter-Pauls-Kirche is of particular historical significance due to the theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who worked at the Zingsthof in 1935 and preached from the pulpit of this church in the same year. This event makes the church a place of historical relevance that extends far beyond the region. In 1986, the church was also equipped with a new organ from the Sauer company in Frankfurt/Oder, whereby the case of the original Mehmel organ was retained.

Meiningen bridge

Zingst

The Meiningen Bridge is a technical landmark with over 100 years of history, which has shaped the transition from rail to road transport and still plays a central role for the region today. The Meiningen Bridge has connected the mainland with the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula since 1910. Originally built as a railroad bridge for the Darßbahn, it was used for road traffic after the Second World War and developed into the region's central traffic artery. Due to its age, a temporary bridge around 200 m long with a lifting section was built in 2012, which still carries road, cycle and pedestrian traffic today. A rail connection is also planned for the replacement construction.
