Kempowski Archive
● Rostock
The writer Walter Kempowski was born in Rostock in 1929 and has created a literary monument to his hometown with the novels of the "German Chronicle." The honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city donated parts of his literary archive to Rostock as early as 1993, which are now on display in a permanent exhibition. Part of writer Walter Kempowski’s literary archive has been housed in the monastery buildings of the “Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz” since 1993. Between 1993 and 2001, visitors could view the archival materials in two rooms of Building 1. Since November 13, 2002, the archive has been housed in Building 3. This has opened up entirely new possibilities for presenting the life and work of Walter Kempowski. The author Walter Kempowski is one of the most significant and widely read German postwar authors. With the novels of the “German Chronicle,” he has created a literary monument to his hometown of Rostock. In particular, the novels *Tadellöser und Wolff*, *Aus großer Zeit*, and *Schöne Aussicht* have introduced the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to an audience of millions. Through the local setting of the novels’ plots on the one hand and the literary engagement with German social and intellectual history in the first half of the 20th century on the other, Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania become a panorama and setting for national remembrance culture. Since 1993, the writer Walter Kempowski has made part of his literary archive available to his hometown of Rostock. With the reopening of the exhibition (on the occasion of the conferral of an honorary doctorate by the University of Rostock in 2002) at Klosterhof 3, the rooms were designed according to the novel’s specific characteristics and the contexts of his works.
Hanstorf Church
● Hanstorf
The church in Hanstorf dates back to the 13th century. The church in Hanstorf, originally an early Gothic fieldstone structure from the 13th century, was later expanded to include a nave and a three-sided chancel with buttresses, using brick. The building stands on a slight hill within a cemetery enclosed by a brick wall. It is considered one of the region’s most significant medieval structures. To arrange a visit, please contact the Hanstorf rectory.
Lichtenhagen-Dorf Church
● Lichtenhagen
The Lichtenhagen Village Church is the church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Lichtenhagen in Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen in the district of Rostock. The Lichtenhagen Church was first mentioned in 1319. Built largely of uncut boulders, the church dates from the transition period between the Romanesque and Gothic eras and was constructed in stages through several renovations. The rectangular choir with a straight apse from the 13th century is the oldest part of the church. Here, one can find vault paintings from the 14th century. The three-aisled nave was built later. The 42-meter-high west tower is topped by a roof in the shape of a “bishop’s miter.” A major renovation took place in 1892 based on designs by Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel, during which stained-glass windows were also installed. Since 1998, the church has undergone extensive renovation in several phases with the support of a Friends’ Association.
Rostock-Biestow Church
● Rostock
The Biestow Village Church is the church in the Biestow district of Rostock. The current church building was consecrated on October 28, 1298. The church is constructed primarily of fieldstone. Its architectural style lies between the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Renovations have been necessary over the past 26 years. In 1988, the leaded-glass windows were replaced, and in 1992, the church roof was re-thatched. The organ was overhauled in 1993, and the chancel was redesigned in 1998. In 2000, interior renovations began, during which 16th-century murals were discovered in the vault of the chancel. The four archangels were restored to their original appearance and colors.

Bad Doberan Hospital
● Hohenfelde
University Teaching Hospital of the University of Rostock. For 20 years now, the hospital in Bad Doberan has ensured that visitors to our beautiful region feel well cared for should the need arise. However, many vacationers especially appreciate the peace of mind that comes from knowing they can safely rely on the hospital’s rapid assistance in an emergency. During the vacation and holiday season, patient numbers at the Bad Doberan Hospital’s emergency department rise sharply every year. The team at the 24-hour emergency department is well prepared for this. Last year, a total of 1,500 vacationers and holidaymakers visited the emergency department at the Bad Doberan Hospital; half of them subsequently had to be admitted as inpatients. The scope of responsibilities for the team, which works closely with the physicians in the respective specialty departments, is wide-ranging. This includes, among other things, the collection and compilation of all results—for example, from blood tests, ECGs, ultrasounds, video-assisted endoscopy, X-rays, or computed tomography (CT). The examination of patients is performed by a physician from the respective specialty department. The hospital features a Department of Internal Medicine with an affiliated acute geriatric ward, a Department of General Surgery, Orthopedics, and Trauma Surgery and Urology, and a Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Once a diagnosis has been made, the treatment plan is determined, and initial therapeutic measures may already be initiated. A decision is made as to whether inpatient treatment is necessary or not. If there are many patients in the emergency department, priority is naturally given to treating severe injuries and any emergencies reported by the emergency medical services. The dispatch of ambulances and emergency physicians is already coordinated by the emergency dispatch center. The hospital maintains a so-called trauma room for the care of severely injured patients. With the participation of doctors and nurses from various specialties, the primary focus here is on maintaining or restoring the patient’s vital functions. To this end, the patient is monitored by equipment, ventilated if necessary, and their circulation is stabilized with infusions and transfusions as part of shock management. Furthermore, life-saving emergency procedures can be performed. Additional diagnostic steps, such as CT scans or X-rays, are conducted on-site. Additionally, to better handle emergencies, the hospital grounds feature a dedicated helipad. The emergency department at Bad Doberan Hospital is thus, within the Doberan Network for Health Tourism, literally the safety net that provides medical care to all guests in our vacation region in the event of an emergency.
