White bridges

The White Bridges form a short and idyllic connection between the Tribseer Vorstadt and Stralsund's old town. The two white bridges on the man-made Küterdamm are a popular tourist attraction. They span the Knieperteich, which is more of a lake on which you can take short tours in pedal boats or rowing boats. The path across the Knieperteich was once one of several trade routes and still leads through the Kniepertor gate into the old town. As part of the former city fortifications, the White Bridges are now a small recreational area and ideal for escaping the tourist hustle and bustle. From here, the Knieperteich offers a very special photo motif for the Marienkirche. Especially at sunset, when the old town is reflected in the still water, you can take a wonderful vacation photo.

Wiecker wooden bascule bridge

The Wieck wooden bascule bridge connects the two districts of Wieck and Eldena in the Hanseatic town of Greifswald. It was built in 1887 following the Dutch model. The bascule bridge crosses the River Ryck. The river flows into the Dänische Wiek, part of the Greifswalder Bodden. The bridge is only accessible to cyclists and pedestrians and is only opened when necessary. During the approx. 10-minute bridge crossing, visitors can observe how the old monument works.

Viking Graves at "Altes Lager" in Menzlin

South of Menzlin lie the historic Viking graves. This area was once home to a Slavic settlement and a Viking-era trading post. The Vikings, known primarily as a warlike people, were also skilled traders and seafarers; they traded along the entire Baltic Sea coast and had excellent boat builders and skilled craftsmen. This was revealed by archaeological investigations at the former lake trading center of Menzlin near Anklam. The graves of Scandinavian origin discovered here, shaped symbolically like ships and circles, are the only ones of their kind found so far on the southern Baltic Sea coast. Extensive anthropological studies have shown that these are Scandinavian women’s graves containing a variety of grave goods, including Slavic pottery vessels and Scandinavian traditional jewelry. The shape and grave goods of these burial sites suggest that Vikings and Slavs lived peacefully together and were buried side by side in Slavic settlement areas.

Gut Klepelshagen Wildlife Reserve

At Wildtierland Klepelshagen, visitors can marvel at the rich diversity of local flora and fauna without any fences or enclosures. In this area spanning more than 1,500 hectares, animal lovers can keep an eye out for red deer, roe deer, sparrowhawks, or storks; they can stroll right past badgers and foxes as they explore the landscape and discover the “Wildtierland” on special themed trails either on their own or during guided hikes. The Information Center, the “Message from the Wild Animals,” welcomes visitors to explore the exhibits, attend a lecture, or enjoy a delicious snack.

Altkalen Windmill

Steffenshagen Windmill

The windmill in Steffenshagen is a post mill with a smithy. The post mill was relocated here in 1998 from Buschkuhnsdorf (Saxony-Anhalt). It is approximately 200 years old. The original machinery is still intact. The mill is open to visitors. Guided tours of the museum smithy are also available.

Bison Exhibit

The viewing enclosure, located in Woliński National Park, provides a habitat for up to 20 animals at a time. The enclosure covers 28 ha. Behind the fence are viewing terraces, and the entrance is marked by a magnificent gate. In 1976, the first four bison were brought here from Borki and Białowieża: the cow Pomina, the bull Podskakiewicz, and the two heifers Pompeja and Podwyżka. Most of the bison living in the enclosure today were born here. One or two calves are born here every year. Throughout its history, the reserve’s population has ranged from 5 to 12 bison. Today, five bison live here: Poznaniak II, Polikosia, Posawa, Pozowa, and Polanin II. Although the enclosure was established primarily to conserve the bison species, it also cares for sick animals or those raised by humans that are unable to survive in their natural habitat. These include, among others, wild boars, deer, and white-tailed eagles. The enclosure features seating areas, tables, a gazebo for dining and relaxing, viewing terraces, and restrooms. The national park is accessible to people with disabilities.

Wismar Swedish heads

The Swedish heads are the town's landmarks and are a reminder of the time when Wismar was occupied by the Swedes. The Swedish heads are two busts of Hercules painted in baroque style in front of the tree house in the Old Harbour. The originals once stood on dolphins in the harbor entrance near Wendorf. After a Finnish barge damaged the heads in 1902, they were recast true to the originals and put back in the same place a year later. The origin and significance of the Swedish heads cannot be clearly proven. It has been proven that in 1672 a pole, namely the outermost one on the harbor boundary, was referred to as the "Swede" and that the two heads were put in place at the beginning of the 19th century to commemorate the Swedish period. It is highly probable that the two originals were rudder heads and were once part of the sculptural stern decoration of a ship.

In the heart of the Klützer Winkel, on the beach of the Wohlenberger Wiek between Wismar and Boltenhagen, lies our family-run sea buckthorn farm. Since 1997, we have dedicated ourselves with heart and hand to the cultivation, processing and marketing of specialties around the "Lemon of the North". Wolf trapping facility Zwenzow

Wolf trapping facility Zwenzow - An informative place about the life of wolves and how they are dealt with in the region. There is a wolf trapping pit at the Großer Labussee lake near the village of Zwenzow near Wesenberg. When 22 sheep were killed by wolves in a stable in Userin in 1710, this wolf trap was built. After the wolves were exterminated, the pit fell into disrepair and has now been restored as a historical site. However, it is now so shallow that no animal can be caught in it. The pit has a diameter of around 4 meters and was originally so deep that no trapped wolf could escape from it. There is a pole in the middle of the pit to which bait was attached. Live chickens were also used as bait. The pit was then covered with brushwood, grasses and tree bark so that no wolf could get suspicious. If a passing wolf caught the scent of the bait, it tried to catch it. It then fell into the pit and was unable to get out. It was now easy for the farmers to kill the wolf. Wolin Harbor and City Pier

This quiet harbor is located on the Dievenow, the eastern strait between the lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Even though this harbor on the Haff is somewhat off the beaten path, it’s well worth a visit. The harbor basin offers space for about 30 yachts—none too large—at solidly built docks and features electricity and water connections. A restroom facility is also located nearby. Two approaches lead from the lagoon to the harbor: the southern approach has a draft of about 2.5 m, and the northern approach has a draft of only up to 2 m. Those coming from the opposite direction—from the Baltic Sea via Dziwnow—must navigate four bridges, only two of which can be opened: the bascule bridge in Dziwnow and the swing bridge in Wolin. The other two bridges in Wolin—the railroad bridge and the new road bridge—are fixed, but they have a clearance height of 12 m at average water level. You can also moor your boat alongside the city pier, which consists of several hundred meters of concrete pier in front of a green meadow.
