Dändorf History House

Dändorf History House

📍 Dierhagen

Inaugurated in fall 2014, the Dändorf History House delights visitors with exhibitions on the history of the historic North Mecklenburg Salt Road between Sülze and Wismar, which also ran through Dändorf, as well as photographs and postcards from the Baltic seaside resort in the 1960s, taken by the well-known photographer Annemarie Giegold-Schilling (Annemarie Dorn) from Halle. A new exhibition is intended to remind visitors of the importance of sailing and steam shipping for Dändorf and Dierhagen, and in particular of the local captains. The history house in the Dändorf district is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic Salzstraße, today's Dorfstraße. This made the former fire station of the Dändorf fire department the ideal location for the history house. In the 18th century, the historic salt road led from Bad Sülze via the Boddenhafen in Dändorf to Wismar and Schwerin. Dändorf benefited from its function as a salt transshipment point and was given a paved village street early on so that the salt transports from the port did not get stuck in bad weather. This street is still preserved today and can be admired as a historical monument alongside the beautiful old captain's houses in the village. The history house in the Dierhagen district of Dändorf is open to visitors daily from May to October from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Greenhouse Garden and Alexandrine Monument

Greenhouse Garden and Alexandrine Monument

The Grünhausgarten and the southern palace garden with hippodrome, maze and youth temple are in the style of English landscape gardens. This part of the palace garden was restored to its original state for the 2009 Federal Garden Show. In the center of a tree-lined meadow, the Grand Duchess Mother "Alexandrine" looks towards the Youth Temple. The Greenhouse was the summer residence of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich and his wife (the Prussian princess) Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The part of the palace garden belonging to the Greenhouse was one of the Grand Duchess's favorite places and was laid out in the English style around 1840 according to plans by master garden designer Peter Joseph Lenné. Alexandrine continued to live here after her husband's death. A monument in the Greenhouse Garden commemorates her. In addition to the garden, you can also see the Greenhouse (now a children's daycare center) and the Kavaliershaus where the servants were quartered (now privately owned). The grinding mill is also located nearby.
