Havel spring

Havel spring

Ankershagen

The Havel spring was erected south of the Mühlensee in 2007 and symbolizes the beginning of the Havel as a 334 km long river through north-eastern Germany. The most important towns and municipalities along the course of the Havel are depicted with coats of arms. The source of the Havel is difficult to find, as sufficient water has to accumulate in its extensive source area before the Havel "springs". As the Havel source area has very little precipitation, averaging 580 mm per year, water from the large area from Freidorf to Kratzeburg is needed until a constant outflow occurs. Human intervention in this area since the Middle Ages has changed the origin of the Havel - and therefore the watershed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea - several times. The most significant measure was the breakthrough at Mühlensee, 3 km to the north, which was probably carried out in the 16th century. Since then, the water from the Bornsee, Trinnensee and Mühlensee has flowed towards Ankershagen to operate a water mill there. As a result, the outflow to the south dried up, so that Lake Dambeck was considered the source of the Havel for a long time. Melioration work in the 19th and 20th centuries moved the spring area northwards again towards Diekenbruch. This moor has been restored to its natural state since 2004. The dam between Mühlensee and Diekenbruch, along which the path from Ankershagen to Ulrichshof runs, is the watershed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The Havel spring, built here in 2007, is now a popular excursion destination.

Havel Spring Lakes - Berkholz Fishing

Havel Spring Lakes - Berkholz Fishing

Kratzeburg

Traditional fishing with an on-site smokehouse, regional products in the farm store, fish specialties at the “Fischerhütte” snack bar, and fishing permit sales. Clear, clean natural lakes in the Havel headwaters around Kratzeburg in the Müritz National Park, with excellent fish populations, offer ideal conditions for fishing. You can obtain a fishing permit at the Fischerhof upon presentation of a valid fishing license. The fishery and smokehouse are open year-round. Freshwater and saltwater fish are smoked over a wood fire according to a 250-year-old family tradition. The farm store is also open year-round. There, in addition to a selection of smoked and fresh fish, you can purchase delicious fish specialties made on-site. A colorful assortment of fruit spreads—naturally made from our own harvest and prepared in-house—rounds out the selection. To cater to vacationers, the small shop offers even more regional and fair-trade products in the summer: for example, honey, coffee and tea, beverages, sweets to boost your energy, and many other food items. During harvest season, there are also plenty of vegetables and fruits available for purchase. For your family or company celebrations, we’d be happy to prepare a colorful smoked fish platter for you. During the summer months, our fish snack bar, “Fischerhütte,” serves hearty fish specialties made in-house.

Historic hydroelectric power station

Historic hydroelectric power station

Güstrow

-temporarily closed- The historic hydropower plant of Stadtwerke Güstrow still generates green electricity from hydropower, which is fed into the Güstrow power grid. If you are interested, Stadtwerke Güstrow offers a guided tour by prior arrangement. As the population of Güstrow grew in the 19th century, the demand for high-quality drinking water increased. The watercourse of the Nebel at the Mühlentor mill was an ideal location for a waterworks. The need for a reliable power supply also developed in Güstrow. There were often bottlenecks in the supply from the Rostock-Bramow coal-fired power station. The power of the water at the Mühlentor mill was therefore to be used to supply the town. From 1923, the Francis turbine was only used to generate electricity. The turbine was coupled with a direct current generator, which initially only supplied electricity for the pumps of the "Am Berge" waterworks. In 1926/27, the new "Am Berge" hydroelectric power station was built in the area of the Mühlentor mill. The Kaplan turbine was also installed. The Kaplan turbine in the right-hand canal drove a generator to produce electricity, while the Francis turbine in the left-hand canal drove the pumps for the elevated tank in Baustraße. From 1999 to 2000, the "Am Berge" hydroelectric power station was restored by the Güstrow public utility company. The first test run of the turbines was then started as part of EXPO 2000, at which Güstrow was an external location. The electricity generated here is fed into the Güstrow power grid .
