Katzow Sculpture Park

Katzow Sculpture Park

Katzow

The Katzow Sculpture Park is Europe’s largest sculpture park. With over 100 sculptures spread across 20 hectares, the Katzow Sculpture Park is the largest in Europe. Located between Greifswald and Wolgast, on the most beautiful avenue in Western Pomerania, just outside Katzow, the park features sculptures by 90 artists from 23 countries. The materials used are primarily steel and wood. Some of the sculptures weigh as much as 20 tons and reach a height of 18 meters. Viewers are treated to a fascinating harmony between the high sky, the vast landscape, and the sculptures—an unusual contrast to the high sky and the vast landscape in which they stand. The park is both an art venue and part of the landscape. Here, contemporary art becomes an immediate experience. Benches designed by artists are placed at prominent points. A walk-through sound funnel over a pond invites contemplation.""Two Brains Are Better Than One," "Big TAM TAM," "Sensory Overload"—over 100 sculptures by renowned artists from Germany and abroad can be discovered on a stroll through the sculpture park. The founder of the sculpture park is the sculptor Thomas Radeloff, who placed his first “Three Figures” on the meadow in 1991. The idea grew into a viable concept. In 1992, the 1st International Sculpture Workshop took place, which became a regular event and has since enriched the sculpture park annually with several sculptures by domestic and international artists. The Art Barn, created in 1994/95 from the ruins of a dilapidated barn, features 600 m² of exhibition space, a workshop, a hall-like gallery with an open roof truss where up to six exhibitions are held annually, a unique gallery café with a shop, and four guest rooms designed by artists. In addition to paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, a small park guide is also available in the shop. Various workshops and courses are offered, including painting classes. In the spring and late fall, the traditional Easter and Christmas markets take place. With approximately 50 stalls and a pig on a spit, the sculpture park then becomes a popular destination with a festive atmosphere.

The ships had to be able to navigate in shallow waters and were therefore designed to be long and flat. A skûtsje is characterized by speed and manoeuvrability. Slavic castle rampart Garz

Slavic castle rampart Garz

Garz

The Garz castle rampart is a reminder of the former settlement by Slavs. The hill fort, which was built in the middle of the 12th century, underwent several test excavations and sondages from as early as 1725, which brought Slavic pottery and a large number of iron finds to light. The excavation results, as well as written records, prove that the West Slavic Rans had a princely seat here. However, this castle, built as a wood-and-earth construction, is far less important than the Karenz temple castle near Venz. It was not until around 1300 that Garz, as a princely seat and young town, gained more power and influence on the island of Rügen through the re-erection of a castle on the site of the former Slavic rampart. St. Peter's Church

St. Peter's Church

Wolgast

St. Petri Church is the former court church of the Dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast. The 14th-century three-nave basilica served as the court church of the Dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast. It was built around 1350 in honor of the Apostle Peter. A pagan temple is said to have originally stood on the same site, which Otto of Bamberg had destroyed during the Christianization of Pomerania. Today, the burial site of the last Dukes of Pomerania is located in the crypt of St. Petri, and the nave features a medieval cycle of paintings depicting the Dance of Death. There are 184 steps leading up to the tower of St. Petri Church, which can be climbed during the church’s opening hours. From the top, a wonderful panoramic view stretches across the city of Wolgast all the way to the island of Usedom.

City information Loitz

City information Loitz

Loitz

The Loitz town information office is located in the town hall on the market square right in the town center. Over 750 years old, there was originally only a Slavic settlement here on the Peene, later the castle of Pomeranian princes stood there. Later there was even a ducal castle, which unfortunately did not survive the centuries and was completely destroyed in 1701. Instead, there are many other historic buildings, such as St. Mary's Church from the 13th century or the Stone Gate. Also worth seeing is the old town, which was essentially built in the late Middle Ages in the half-timbered style.

St. Nicolai Gützkow town church

St. Nicolai Gützkow town church

Gützkow

The town church of St. Nikolai is located in Gützkow in Western Pomerania. It has a neo-Gothic interior. The fieldstone church in Gützkow was first mentioned in a document in 1241. However, today's church square was a religious site even earlier. There was a pagan temple here, which had to make way for a church building consecrated by Bishop Otto von Bamberg in 1128. The town church was badly damaged in a fire in the 18th century and was rebuilt and restored in the following decades. The church has a neo-Gothic interior. There are stained glass windows in the choir, which depict Martin Luther, Otto von Bamberg, the blessing Christ, Nicholas of Myra and the apostles Peter and Paul, among others.

City wall

City wall

Stralsund

Large parts of the 700-year-old town wall are still preserved and have been continuously restored over the last few decades. Compared to other medieval towns, Stralsund still has large sections of the town wall. In the 13th century, the fortifications still consisted of piles. However, it was quickly replaced by a stone wall with towers and battlements in the 14th century. The section of the town wall between the former Hospitaler Tor gate and the Kütertor gate, which still exists today, was restored in the 1960s. The battlement walkways and the Wiekhäuser are also still preserved here. Two of the former ten gates still exist - the Kniepertor, mentioned in a document as early as 1293 and now used as an original dwelling, and the aforementioned Kütertor. The latter was built in 1446 and is sparsely structured with blinds on both sides. A tent roof with a lantern and steep helmet forms the end.

City forest

City forest

Stralsund

The Stralsund city forest - a city forest on the moor pond. The Stralsund city forest is primarily used for recreation, to improve the quality of life in the city, to supply the citizens with wood and, of course, for nature conservation. It is an attractive green belt within the city, covers almost 50 hectares of water and land and was originally a ground moraine. This is why a layer of peat up to seven meters thick still rests under the moor pond today. The very nutrient-rich and moist soil favors the growth of plants such as reed beds and silver willows. Many different paths and trails lead through the wooded area, which extends north to southwest around the moor pond. This means that a walk around the moor pond is always a walk through the forest.
