To this day, the view that Caspar David Friedrich captured around 1820 in “Meadows near Greifswald” remains almost unchanged. The painting, featuring the silhouette of the Hanseatic city behind lush green meadows, hangs in the Hamburger Kunsthalle—but the original scene, as Caspar David Friedrich saw it, can still be experienced here, in the heart of nature. Although now hidden by buildings and vegetation, the view—the one Caspar David Friedrich saw while creating the sketch for “Meadows near Greifswald”—can still be clearly imagined thanks to the church towers of St. Nikolai, St. Jakobi, and St. Marien. He viewed the silhouette of the Hanseatic city from the northwest, roughly where the New Cemetery is located today. The resulting painting is now world-famous and is on display at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The lush green meadows just outside the city gates, which still serve as pastures, have remained unchanged. The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Zentrum, opened in 2004 in the historic Seifensiederei and expanded in 2011 to include the entire former residential and commercial building of the Friedrich family, commemorates the great painter and greatest son of the city of Greifswald. It is also a museum, documentation and research center. Caspar David Friedrich was born here on September 5, 1774. Visitors can see his father's old soap-making workshop, the family cabinet with the family tree, the Rügen and Eldena rooms with famous motifs from Friedrich's work and the Caspar David Friedrich Gallery. St. Nicholas Cathedral, Greifswald

Greifswald Cathedral is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in northern Germany. With its 100-meter-high tower, it towers over the Hanseatic city of Greifswald. From the tower gallery, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view all the way to the island of Rügen. The slender Baroque onion dome with two lanterns replaced the Gothic spire in 1652. The University of Greifswald was founded in St. Nikolai in 1456. Today, it is, among other things, the venue for the Greifswald Bach Week. Protestant Cathedral, first mentioned in a document in 1280, a nine-and-a-half-bay-long brick basilica with a three-sided choir, a chapel annex, and a sacristy on the north side, built in the first half of the 15th century incorporating the predecessor building, a five-bay, three-nave brick hall church; expanded around 1400 to include a four-and-a-half-bay choir and a surrounding ring of chapels. The painter Caspar David Friedrich made the church in his hometown world-famous. It was not until the seat of the bishop of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church was moved from Stettin to Greifswald in 1947 that the parish church became a cathedral. Particularly striking is the tower, which tapers upward, featuring an onion dome and four corner towers. The Greifswald Bach Weeks are held annually in the light-filled basilica.

Catch tower Greifswald

This building was part of the medieval fortifications that once surrounded Greifswald. The Fangenturm was first mentioned in the town register in 1329 as "Vangentorm". After the fortifications in the area of the Schützenwall were levelled in the 18th century and the Hansering was built in the 1970s, the 13.50-metre-high tower was preserved as a rudiment. Later, when the building no longer met the requirements as a powder tower, the city leased it to the university in 1775, which used the tower as an observatory for a while due to its height and location on the edge of the city. The battlements were not added until the middle of the 19th century, when the Fangenturm was even used as a public toilet. After extensive conservation and renovation work in the 1990s, the harbour master of the museum harbour was able to move into his office on the first floor. He has organizational responsibility for the harbour with over 50 berths, which are reserved exclusively for seaworthy traditional ships.

St. Jacob's Church, dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen, was first mentioned by name in 1280. The brick church consists of a three-aisled hall and the somewhat narrower square west tower. Until a fire in 1955, the originally taller tower still had a half-timbered top, which was not restored when the tower roof was reconstructed.

St. Mary’s Church is open to visitors after the Sunday service until 1:00 p.m. During the months of June, July, and August, the following hours apply: Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You can sign up for guided tours at the church office or inside the church. Construction of St. Mary’s Church, also known to Greifswald residents as “Dicke Marie,” likely began in the mid-13th century. Together with the city’s two other churches, St. Nikolai and St. Jacobi, it was first mentioned in a document in 1280. The church was built as a hall church and is today one of the most impressive examples of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Highlights inside the church include, in addition to the preserved colored paintings (14th century), the medieval courtroom, the large cargo-lifting wheel in the tower, the memorial chapel, the altarpiece—a replica of Correggio’s “Holy Night”—and the richly decorated pulpit (16th century).

The birthplace of the writer Wolfgang Koeppen (1906–1996) was opened as a literary center in 2002. It serves as the Wolfgang Koeppen Memorial and as a venue for events such as readings. Visitors can tour Koeppen’s Munich study and his estate—which includes 11,000 volumes held by the University of Greifswald (archive accessible by appointment)—as well as temporary exhibitions exploring the intersection of art and literature. The marina has jetties with 230 berths and sanitary facilities. The water depth is 2.5 - 3.5m. Access is via the barrier with transponders or mooring cards. A visitor parking lot is also available. A shipyard directly connected to the marina and the service companies on the grounds of the yacht center offer various services for yachts.
Museum harbor Greifswald

Gaff-rigged ketch and schooner, seaquat and ram ship, cruiser and dinghy - around 45 old ships characterize the image of the museum harbour in Greifswald, which was founded in 1991 following the example of the museum harbours in Flensburg and Hamburg. This was the Hanseatic city's response to the increased interest in historic ships and traditional seamanship. As part of the old city harbour, the museum harbour stretches from the Steinbeck Bridge to the old granary and characterizes the maritime flair of the Hanseatic city. The oldest ship that visitors can admire in the museum harbour is the Zeesboot "Pommerland" from 1880. www.museumshafen-greifswald.de lists all the ships moored here. 15 of them offer excursions and sailing trips. You can also take part in the annual gaff rigging. By the way: The Greifswald Museum Harbour Association also organizes group tours of the museum harbour and the museum shipyard, where old ships are restored, on request.

Greifswald-Wieck Parish Church

Concerts for the Greifswald Bach Week are held at the parish church in Greifswald-Wieck. A church in Wieck was first mentioned in historical records in the 13th century. However, it was not located on the current church square, but in the center of the village. After another church building was rendered unusable by storm surge damage, the new construction—which had been postponed several times—was finally completed at the end of the 19th century. The Neo-Romanesque church was finished in 1883. Inside the church, the Mehmel organ, the pulpit, and the model ships—which evoke the seafaring tradition that shaped the town of Wieck for centuries—are worth seeing.
