Wiesen bei Greifswald

17489 Greifswald

To this day, the view that Caspar David Friedrich captured in "Meadows near Greifswald" around 1820 remains almost unchanged. The painting with the silhouette of the Hanseatic city behind lush green pastures hangs in the Hamburg Kunsthalle - but the original scene as Caspar David Friedrich saw it can be recreated here in the middle of nature. Although now hidden due to the buildings and vegetation, it is still clearly visible through the church towers of St. Nikolai, St. Jakobi and St. Marien - Caspar David Friedrich's view as he made the sketch for "Meadows near Greifswald". He viewed the silhouette of the Hanseatic city from a north-westerly direction, roughly where the New Cemetery is located today. The resulting painting is world-famous today and is exhibited in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The lush green meadows outside the city gates, which still serve as pastures, have not changed. The Ryck makes its way through the greenery. Here you can not only enjoy the peace and quiet and the view, but also go for a walk or a short hike. The best way to experience the life and work of the Romantic painter is on the Caspar David Friedrich picture trail in and around his native town of Greifswald. You can get to know the Hanseatic city from a romantic perspective by bike or on foot in the footsteps of Caspar David Friedrich. There are 15 stations with signposts and information boards where you can follow the artistic and romantic path of the most important landscape painter of the Romantic period and be enchanted by him. Stops along the trail include the birthplace, which today houses the Caspar David Friedrich Center, and the Pomeranian State Museum, where numerous original works by the painter can be viewed.

📍 Greifswald

The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Zentrum, opened in 2004 in the historic Seifensiederei and expanded in 2011 to include the entire former residential and commercial building of the Friedrich family, commemorates the great painter and greatest son of the city of Greifswald. It is also a museum, documentation and research center. Caspar David Friedrich was born here on September 5, 1774. Visitors can see his father's old soap-making workshop, the family cabinet with the family tree, the Rügen and Eldena rooms with famous motifs from Friedrich's work and the Caspar David Friedrich Gallery. The tour offers comprehensive information on Friedrich's origins, career and creative style as well as on the history of the Friedrich family and their home and business premises, which is also the subject of a long-term research project by the Caspar David Friedrich Society. Changing exhibitions of contemporary art in the Caspar David Friedrich Gallery bear witness to the enduring fascination and impact of Friedrich's work and historical Romanticism. Thanks to its location in the heart of Greifswald's old town, the center is a particularly attractive destination for anyone who wants to follow in the artist's footsteps in his hometown. In the immediate vicinity is St. Nikolai Cathedral, where Caspar David Friedrich was baptized, and it is only a few minutes' walk to the Pomeranian State Museum with its original Friedrich paintings.
