Near Lake Hertha stands the so-called “Sagenstein,” on which, according to legend, the footprints of an adult, a child, and a hare or dog are imprinted. The legend itself tells of the trial of a maiden who was to be sacrificed to the pagan gods. However, the “Sagenstein” was actually erected by an enterprising innkeeper at Königsstuhl, who presumably created this additional “attraction” in the 19th century. The Sagenstein at Lake Hertha in Sassnitz – Legend and Truth
Not far from Lake Hertha in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen lies an unusual natural monument: the so-called “Sagenstein.” Imprints are said to be embedded in the rock, showing the footprints of an adult, a child, and either a hare or a dog. The associated legend tells of a maiden who was to be sacrificed to the pagan gods—a story that fits well with the mystical atmosphere of Lake Hertha in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Business acumen instead of ancient tradition—the true story of the Sagenstein
However, anyone who assumes there is an ancient tradition behind the Sagenstein is mistaken. According to archaeological findings, it was likely a resourceful innkeeper at the Königsstuhl who erected the stone in the 19th century as an additional attraction for visitors. The Sagenstein is thus less of an authentic archaeological monument and more of an early example of tourist promotion—which, in its own way, makes it well worth seeing.
