The 70-kilometer “Rügen Coastal Trail” promises beautiful scenic experiences.

From the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Viewpoint, a plateau-like chalk outcrop, you’ll have a wonderful view of the chalk formations that drop steeply down to the sea. In 1981, approximately 150,000 cubic meters of chalk rock collapsed here. The sea has not yet completely eroded the rock, so you can still see a distinct white color in the water. The lookout point was named after the historian, writer, and journalist Ernst Moritz Arndt.

The 1981 chalk collapse—a geological event on the Baltic Sea
A striking testament to the geological dynamics of this coastal section is the major chalk collapse of 1981, during which approximately 150,000 cubic meters of chalk rock tumbled into the sea. To this day, the water has not completely eroded the fallen material—when the sea is calm, a distinct white coloration can still be seen in the water below the viewpoint. The viewpoint was named after the historian, writer, and journalist Ernst Moritz Arndt, who had close ties to the island of Rügen.
The Rügen Coastal Trail – Hiking along the chalk coast
The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Viewpoint is located on the Rügen Coastal Trail, which spans approximately 70 kilometers and takes hikers through scenically diverse sections of the Baltic Sea coast. The trail takes hikers through one of Germany’s most distinctive coastal landscapes—past chalk cliffs, beech forests, and sweeping ocean views.
